Exactly. All my secrets locked up nice and tight. [She pats the side of the tablet] All the info's digital. Which is... really hard to explain, the more I think about it.

[witchwoman]

Learning to read and write is impressive enough. I'd considered joining the magician's university in Coronnan simply to be taught such a secret. The battlemages back home are not so quick to teach a witchwoman, though.

Oh we will definitely getting on teaching you how to read, don't worry. I mean I'm not very much of a teacher, but if Gar gets time, she's really good at that kinda thing, I'm sure.

[witchwoman]

I wouldn't want to be a bother to anyone.

[But her eyes betray her humility. Myrilandel is most certainly interested in learning this skill.]

[shootfirst]

I think it'd be more of a bother if we left you illiterate for the next couple years, in the long run. It's no big deal. Promise.

[witchwoman]

[She can't help herself. Next thing she knows, Myri's throwing her arms around Kat and hugging her.]

Thank you. [She mumbles, not letting go just yet.]

[shootfirst]

[Kat grins and squeezes her back, seeming a little surprised by her overzealous enthusiasm, but not bothered by it] Hey, what are friends for?

[witchwoman]

[Being taught to read is incredibly rare where Myri is from. A person needs to be of a certain amount of worth. Not even nobility are taught to read- only magicians. Myri never dreamed that anyone would find her important enough to teach.

She eventually pulls away and settles back in her seat.]

Friends. [She says with a smile. Myrilandel now has a friend. And she isn't terrified of being chased away or burned alive. It's such a strange feeling.]

Of course friends. I mean not every squire makes friends with their Knight I guess, but that's totally lame, if you ask me. Gar's still my best friend.

[witchwoman]

You were squired to Sir Gar?

[The two seems so... different.]

[shootfirst]

Yep! She taught me all the ins and outs of the whole Knights thing. And I taught her how to lighten up a little.

[witchwoman]

[Myri looks in Gar's direction, trying to imagine that pairing.]

Fascinating. How long ago were you squired?

[shootfirst]

Last April, and then I got my full Knighthood in June. Gar was still pretty new herself, to be honest. I think Wynn yanked her out of college or something.

[witchwoman]

I suppose I assumed you'd all been at this for longer. It seems to come so naturally.

[shootfirst]

Well, before that I'd be picking things up more or less on my own. I mean I learned from somebody, but lots of... experimentation since my early teens.

With magic.

[witchwoman]

[Myri nods] A great deal can be learned by trial and error.

I was taken in by the witchwoman Magretha when I was two. Unfortunately, she died when I was six, so I was only able to learn a little from her. After that, I was on my own.

[shootfirst]

Only two? I'm pretty sure I was still trying to master the fine art of walking straight at two, let alone thinking about learning magic.

[She smiles a little] Still, I guess you could say I learned from a witchwoman too. Everyone called her a witch at least, and she lived out in the woods and nobody would go around there. Her name was Morish.

[witchwoman]

That's when she found me and took me in. A witchwoman's life is anything but stable, so I had to learn fast to help out where I could. She was very kind to me and a wonderful teacher.

[Myri leans forward, taking a particular interest in Kat's mentor.] But you went out there? Or did she find you?

[shootfirst]

I guess I couldn't resist the challenge. My friends sort of dared me... but when I broke into her shed, she didn't hex me or anything like that. She just showed me the plants she was growing out there and told me about what they were all for. Different herbs for potion making and stuff.

[witchwoman]

[She smiles at the story, finding herself quite reminded of the witchwoman who had raised her- so very misunderstood.]

She taught you many things?

[shootfirst]

Everything I knew before Wynn found me. Which, ok, not much compared to these master mages around here, but considering where I was from, it impressed the locals.

And got me in hot water a few times.

[witchwoman]

[You can't talk about locals and mention 'hot' without causing Myri to wince.]

I'm glad that Wynn was able to find you before the situation got out of hand.

[shootfirst]

Probably depends on your definition of out of hand.

Doesn't matter anyways. Ancient history.

[witchwoman]

[Myri knows better than to push, despite her curiosity. She smiles and nods her agreement.]

I think I should leave you to your spells. We'll have a lot to do once we land.
