I just worry that everyone has put too much stock in what happened. Not many people bring up the fact that I nearly lost consciousness right there beside him in doing what I did.

[Martha nods, thinking about this.] So is it possible that you could only heal a wound partway? Like, enough to keep it from being life-threatening, but then...conserve some of your own energy? Or if you had more than one injured person to tend to and you couldn't heal all of them completely?

[She takes a seat nearby and tries to think of how to explain it.] My gift comes more as a... compulsion. I can feel the wounds or sickness within a person and feel an overwhelming urge to right the body's wrong.

Unfortunately, I rarely have the sense of mind to stop once I begin. Even if continuing is detrimental to my own well being.

[Martha wrinkles her nose at that; it sounds rather uncomfortable, to say the least. On the other hand, it also makes her feel a bit less useless, since it's obvious that Myri won't be able to heal everything.] That is a bit inconvenient, yeah. Maybe the Knights'll have someone who understands how it works so that you can learn how to control it better, though?

It's possible. They seem to have a great many people here who know a fair amount about magic. It's wonderful.

Gar gave me some books about magic theory - I have to admit, I don't understand half of what any of it means, but it's pretty brilliant. You're welcome to borrow a couple, if you'd like. I have way too many; she gave me a reading list when I just asked her for a few books to help me learn more about this world.

[Myri pauses, looking incredibly confused, as if she's just realized something.]

You said you don't know much about magic?

But then who taught you to read?

Everybody learns how to read in my world - we're taught when we're young, along with...well, everything else we learn in school. [Martha feels a little embarrassed and awkward now.] You don't know how to read, then? Oh! I'm sorry, I didn't know.

[She pauses for a moment, thinking.] I could help teach you, if you want - I mean, if Kat isn't already planning on doing that, since you're her squire and all. And I could teach you things about how non-magical healing works here, too, if you're interested?

[Myri shakes her head, not embarrassed at all. In fact, she's just confused.] Only magicians trained at the University are taught to read where I come from. It's a skill that even kings have not mastered. I cannot imagine...

[She stops and smiles] Really? She mentioned something, but I don't think she'd mind the help. I'm not certain how long it takes for a person to learn, after all. I know some about treating wounds without magic, but I'm sure there's always more to learn.

Really? Is it because words are magic, or just because knowledge is limited to the magicians? It must be terribly difficult to communicate across distances and things - though I suppose you can probably do that with magic, too.

She might be busy during our mission - I can't imagine having more than one person working on it would hurt things. English is sort of tricky when it comes to spelling things properly, but I'm sure you'll pick it up soon enough. And yeah, I'm a doctor - someone who heals without magic - so I know all about it. There's probably a fair bit to do with modern medicine that I can teach you. Do you heal with herbs and things?

I'm not certain why it's that way- only that it's always been.

[She nods] Herbs are involved, yes. Cleansing wounds, wrapping, treating for pain.

We use chemicals - though a lot of them are derived from plants, just...mass-produced so we can get more of them. And surgery, cutting people open to treat them internally. I expect healing magic is probably even better for that sort of thing, though.

[There are words that she doesn't understand, but the gist is there.]

I would be very interested to see these things.
