Strange winds have blown in, bringing on an unusually chill winter in New Zealand. The ground crunches underfoot with snow, the days growing shoter and stars holding court in the darkness reigning above. An unnatural cold permeates the town, and the river's jubilant voice is frozen under the ice. Birds abandon their nests for warmer climes, their songs silenced by winter's grim embrace. But the frozen riverbank now hosts a shimmering respite from the gloomy cold in the form of garish tents, joyful shouts, and sumptuous smells. Vaale's Carnival has come to town.

Gaiety and laughter cut through the cold wind, and even the sky-shy sun peeks its face from around the gathering winter clouds. Children squeal with delight and gasp in awe at the sights, sounds, and smells of Vaale's Carnival. The Titan's Wheel creaks and groans as a burly lumberjack tests his might wit a hefty spin, a family rushes giggling into the sprawling ice maze to the north, and dozens of happy skaters flit about the rinks atop the frozen river. Carnival dolls are handed to wide-eyed townspeople as prizes and a menagerie of freakish creatures and glowing lights beckons the curious. Garish skirts and scanty veils call others to a different breed of voyeurism altogether. Treats and wonders abound for young and old to enjoy, and for a time, the harsh winter is forgotten in joyful revelry. There's nothing to indicate any sinister going on whatsoever, as the group surveys the happy smiles of the crowd.

Oh - pfft. Yeah. Explosions and shiny things at a Freaknival doesn't sound ominous at all. [Wis 21]

But I'm in. [Because since when does Kenzi ever do anything that's good for her?!]

[ a croaking voice speaks up from behind them: ]

An hour to kill? Just enough time to hear your fates. [ turning around, they'd see an old crone wrapped in an ornately patterned shawl. her dark eyes burn like charcoal. ] Only one dollar a reading.

[charismapotion]

[ Whose a fool? Mars totally is. He looked to Kenzi and Bo.]

You have a dollar? I can pay you back I just have everything on a card.

[Guess who else is too?

Bo puts a hand in her back pocket and pulls out a five.]

We'll take three. You can keep the change.

Goood. Good! [ she coos as she takes the money and turns to hobble back towards a tent that they swore wasn't there a few moments ago. a sign hangs outside it: "Madame Viscolla - Not only can she read your future, she can change it!" ] Come in, come in. My readings are inexpensive, but I promise - they are unforgettable. [ the inside of the tent is dim, swathed in red cloth and beads, and warm candlelight. the winter doesn't seem to touch this place, and she positions herself on the other side of a small table, in front of which they need to kneel on a rug. ] Who dares to go first?

[charismapotion]

[ Mars moves to hold open the cloth and beads so the ladies can pass. He'll go in last. Mostly he's trying to play gentlemen here.]

[Kenzi doesn't even try to hide the rolling of hr eyes at Madame Viscolla's spiel and if Bo hadn't already asked for three, this one would have been noping out of this exercise. Ice Sculpting? Okay. Carnie Fortune tellers? Scammer knows a scam.]

Yeah, yeah. Lets get this over with. [Kenzi dares apparently, climbing down onto the floor and looking impatient as she bounces in place.] Please do wow me with your super vague predictions Madame... whatever your name was.

Tell me, dear, what is it you seek insight into? The future? A relationship, perhaps? Perhaps your career, a decision you must make, a problem you face...?

[morethanasidekick]

Well lets see. [Leaning forward and resting her elbows on the table.] I live in the now. I have a job plus I avoid decisions and problems by pretending they don't exist. [All very matter of fact.] Oh and Cinderella's Castle at Disneyland has seen more action than my lady parts in recent times so. Honey, if you can make something out of any of that? More power to ya.

[behindcloseddoors]

[ the old woman chuckles and then draws three cards, placing them face down. ] Then let us see what the cards have to say. [ she flips over the first one: the Knight of Pentacles, turned upside down. ] This card represents your past - where you come from. The Knight rides a slow, heavy horse, and he himself is weighted down by the armor he has pulled around himself. While he holds aloft his symbol, he does not look at it, does no more than counterfeit the appearance he wishes to present. His reversal indicates ... carelessness, stagnation, idleness. While his spirit may be brave, may be built for great adventure, he has squandered it, been left purposeless.

[Wow poor Kenzi. That's....not the best thing in the world to hear. She wonders how true it is.]

[ she flips over the center card: three swords pierce a heart, with cloud and rain behind them. this card too, is presented upside down. ] The Three of Swords - Reversed, to indicate your present course, and those forces currently at work upon you. Something has been lost - an error made. A distraction that will lead to disorder and confusion. It may also indicate a meeting that has been compromised. A missed opportunity to cross paths with someone who may hold the answers you seek.

[If the first part of the reading hits home in any way, it certainly doesn't show (Bluff Nat 20), Kenzi managing to look, if anything bored. Or course, her yawning in the middle probably doesn't help much.

The second part however, makes her perk up... mostly because, it totally serves her own agenda.]

Uh - Toldya we should have checked out the ice-sculpting. [Just sayin.] Okay next. And lady. If you say anything about a big black dog I'm going to hurl all over your table.

The final card speaks to your future - to what is coming into play that has not yet been revealed. [ This card is played right side up - and inscribed with "The World" underneath a woman in a flowery wreath, who is nude except for a light scarf. In each hand she bears a wand. At each corner of the card, a cherubic animal is drawn: an Eagle, a Man, a Lion, and a Bull. ] Ahhh, the World. Completion of some important task stands before you, and the hope of great reward for doing so. Great cosmic forces compel you forward to do what you must do, and if you succeed, all will be restored to the balance, thanks to your actions.

Laaaaaame. [Eyeballs rolling back in her head as her eyes flutter.] Not you - well, a little bit you because none of this is actually ya know, exciting for yours truly but, thanks for the vague insult about my general state of idle and ah, bonus points for helping me win an argument.

[Kenzi taps her hand on the table and in the same nimble manner that she folded herself to the ground, she unfolds herself and moves to stand beside Bo with a bounce.]

Either she's been breathing in too many incence fumes or, she's telling us to go back to the ice sculpting and you can use your weapons of mass distraction - [Boobs.] - To win us a hundred bucks. [Wis 18.]

[ Guess whose been hanging on hook line and sinker? Yep, he buys all of it even if he cant make sense of it, cause he dont know Kenzi.]

[behindcloseddoors]

[ she calmly regards them from where she sits, smiling mysteriously at Mars. ] Ah, but you did ask for three readings, did you not?

She did!

[ So exitable he is.]

Then I presume you should like to be next, young man.

Yeah. [ yup, he's excited.]

Do you seek enlightenment on some specific matter?

[ He thought about it for a moment before nodding some.]

[Bo looks over at Mars, gesturing for him to sit and take his turn.]
