Strange winds have blown in, bringing on an unusually chill winter in New Zealand. The ground crunches underfoot with snow, the days growing shoter and stars holding court in the darkness reigning above. An unnatural cold permeates the town, and the river's jubilant voice is frozen under the ice. Birds abandon their nests for warmer climes, their songs silenced by winter's grim embrace. But the frozen riverbank now hosts a shimmering respite from the gloomy cold in the form of garish tents, joyful shouts, and sumptuous smells. Vaale's Carnival has come to town.

Gaiety and laughter cut through the cold wind, and even the sky-shy sun peeks its face from around the gathering winter clouds. Children squeal with delight and gasp in awe at the sights, sounds, and smells of Vaale's Carnival. The Titan's Wheel creaks and groans as a burly lumberjack tests his might wit a hefty spin, a family rushes giggling into the sprawling ice maze to the north, and dozens of happy skaters flit about the rinks atop the frozen river. Carnival dolls are handed to wide-eyed townspeople as prizes and a menagerie of freakish creatures and glowing lights beckons the curious. Garish skirts and scanty veils call others to a different breed of voyeurism altogether. Treats and wonders abound for young and old to enjoy, and for a time, the harsh winter is forgotten in joyful revelry. There's nothing to indicate any sinister going on whatsoever, as the group surveys the happy smiles of the crowd.

The corners of her mouth lift at the sound of that noise, and as she feels Lis'sa's legs tighten around her, it gives her use of both of her hands.

This might get NC-17 indeed. Hungry Bo is hungry.

At least she's not ripping off anyone's clothes, but her fingers are definitely wandering underneath fabric. /gives everyone a show, gives zero fucks]

Were I in the habit of treating women as though they were all courtesans, I might consider as much. I've found that most are insulted by such treatment, however.

[ lis'sa smooths down her shirt, before turning to give kenzi and mars an unimpressed flat stare. she does not, however, address any of their commentary, responding instead to klaus' question. ] I'm sure there's more chaos to be found anywhere on these grounds. Let's pick a direction and strike out.

[Kenzi just... stares at Mars for a long moment, her face the picture of 'How are you even real' before she turns her attention to Lis'sa, totally unfazed by the look she receives.]

Lead the way! [Cause I think we can all agree that Kenzi should not.]

[ w/e y'all. she just turns and strikes east, along the edge of the frozen lake. their feet squelch through leeches that are still writhing on the ground from the earlier unnatural rain here.

they find themselves back at the 'ice carving contest' - where lined up in rows are impressive blocks of ice, each standing about six feet high. dozens of revelers, including lumberjacks, children, pairs of giddy lovers, and more than one aspiring artist, gather round the blocks with hammers and chisels happily supplied by a pair of bushy-bearded gnomes. as one strong lumberjack chisels into a certain block, a spot check of 15+ can catch blood starting to trickle out of its interior... followed by severed ears, fingers, and worse, dropping to join the ice shavings at the blocks' bases. ] There.

Ice carving contest. See I told you we should have entered! [Says she who totally sucked with a Spot Check of 6 and misses the whole, body parts bit.]

[Congratulations, Kenzi. Klaus is starting to question whether or not you possess the few brain cells he'd credited to you thus far (which wasn't saying much to begin with).

His spot check of 21 means that the severed body parts don't escape his notice though, which should explain his scathing judgment of Kenzi at the moment.]

I doubt they would turn away another willing volunteer. You ought to ask whether or not it's too late for you to participate.

We should get the participants away first, before we open fire on those things. Find a way to make them scatter.

The easiest way to make things scatter is to scare them, right? Then, let's scare them.

[ as the crowd scatters, lis'sa tries to shoot at the things, but is too worried about hitting the fleeing people and overcompensates (atk 12 & 14, double miss wheee) ]

Well I just threw up in my mouth a little.

[Oh yeah, she makes the spot check this time (spot 16) and hurriedly goes for her gun because lbr if she keeps trying to use the crossbow there's more of a chance that she'll shoot herself.

and lmao. Instead she gets a Nat 20 Atk. 18 dmg, or if Penetration Damage is in play; 28dmg.

Kenzi Malikov. Either shooting her teammates or critting. There is no in between.]

[ Mars takes a breath, its unsettling and wrong on so many levels.

He flinched when Kenzi shot, of course he has reason to worry, he's still bleeding after all, but monkey see, monkey do. He pulled the gun back out but stops, calling over to Lissa.]

Hey! Do you think fire would be better right now than bullets? [ He wanted her thoughts before he whipped out a fire spell, namely with people around.]

They look like creatures of ice, so I would hope so. [ they can be penetrated! ... phrasing. kenzi hits the bug eyed one right in the chest. mars can take his held action if he wants to? otherwise i'll edit this, just let me know in de plurk.

the chiseler that kenzi struck turns and mutters "Skin like ice, bones like glass, crack and snap and fractious smash!" kenzi has to make a will save...

the yellow toothed chiseler hurls an icicle shard at lis'sa (atk 12), which whizzes past her. ]

[Oh hell no, no one tries to cast magic on Kenzi fuck you.

So she'll shoot at the bug-eyed one (atk 18, dmg 8 if that hits).]

[I guess Klaus just likes to watch the carnage and destruction like a voyeur because he sho is just standing there again.

But after Bo starts unloading on bug-eyed frosty, he zooms toward yellow tooth. No way in hell Klaus is biting that tho (he has standards ok), so he will settle for falcon punch (attack 22, damage 17+2 piercing=19). You know, assuming he gets close enough in one turn.]

[ bo's shot whizzes by it, but klaus lands a brutal blow on the other one, which recoils in pain. lis'sa also shoots at the one attacking kenzi (atk 25 & 8; dmg 7), striking it once. ]

I gave up the Carnie life for a reason you know! [As she fires off another shot at the one attacking her but in her state of mild panic, yeah it probably misses; (Atk 17/Dmg 9).]

[ Took Mars awhile to get his attack ready, but finally he casts Scorching Ray, but just one ray to test and see if it works. (Attack 20, Damage 17) ]

[ the ray strikes the little chiseler and melts him within seconds, which is just a little bit scarring i guess. his bug eyed friend sees this, lets out a terrified yelp, and turns to do a full retreat, booking it in the opposite direction ]
