Unlike the grandiose nature of the squiring ceremony each Knight undergoes upon their initial entrance into the Knighthood, the graduation to Full Knight status takes place in a much more intimate affair, between the Knight, their mentor, invited friends, and the members of the sect to which they will be inducted. There's no pompous music, no stolid rank and file, no elaborate march.

The Knight's new section head, Wynn, and their mentor Knight wait up at the front of the room for their approach, but the attitude of the ceremony is much more relaxed, full of smiles and light conversation on all sides. Of course, when Wynn speaks, people still hush. It's just how he rolls.

I've been told that's how marriage works too, so at least you're prepared for that.

I, er, wouldn't exactly know.

About marriage? [she raises an eyebrow.] Well, when two people love each other a lot, they trick each other into thinking they want to spend the rest of their lives together and share everything...

[yes, because he doesn't know what marriage is. clearly.]

No! I mean, I know what marriage is, I just-- don't have much experience with it. My parents never wed.

Wait. Really? [THIS IS ENTIRELY NEW INFORMATION.] I mean that's... normal here, but...

[BUT THE SHADOW WORLD IS DIFFERENT!! AND BACKWARDS!!]

My parents were from entirely different worlds. My mother was human and traveled with her father, who was a merchant that sometimes peddled wares at the elven settlement where my father lived. When my grandfather fell ill, they allowed him to seek refuge there while he recovered, and that was when they met.

Wow. I guess I kinda figured you had a weirdly average upbringing. Y'know. The Shadow World equivalent to two kids and a dog and a picket fence. [She tilts her head.] So... what happened?

My father was a Vigilant Blade: a sentinel of the Vale who had sworn his life to protecting the hidden colony and the temple there. By the decree of his people, Vigilant Blades were not allowed to wed. You might say they were wed to their duties. My mother took to visiting him on the wall where he served.

"Special" visits, I'm guessing. [scare quotes are definitely there. Bambi, be nice. These are his parents, though for someone who treats romance like its a terminal illness, she's surprisingly intrigued.] That's... actually really cute.

[ he blushes the tiniest bit, and nods curtly ] When they found out, my mother was all but shamed for it by the community. It's considered ... unethical to attempt to lead Blades away from their vows.

[theshameofcain]

Well, the heart wants what it wants. [She flicks a wrist.] And it takes two to tango. He could have kicked her out if he was really that in love with his vows.

Perhaps, but the Elders didn't see it that way. When she became pregnant, and the affair was uncovered, they invoked the right of the Blades: if any Blade were to break their vows and bring a child into the world, it would be beholden to the Blades, and trained to take its parent's place when they died.

[theshameofcain]

Wait. Are you serious? But you're not- [but he's not... And she gets a nat 20 wisdom check to remember he has a sister, which makes this even more complicated.] So your sister-?

My mother was quite surprised when she wound up delivering... twins. Aurelian was the elder by a few minutes, but that meant that the right of the Blades fell upon her.

[theshameofcain]

Yikes. [And she thought her familial obligations were bad enough to cut ties and run away from home from.] How was that... working out for her before you... took a permanent daytrip over here?

[pickyourbattles]

Not... particularly well. She had been training with my father for years, but he passed away quite unexpectedly, only a few years ago. She'd expected to have many more years of freedom ahead of her, and-- chose to run off on her own, rather than accept the responsibility.

Your sister sounds like my kind of girl. She has a good head on her shoulders.

[said no one about aurelian greyfire ever.]

It might be more accurate to say she was something of a... free spirit. She hated the idea of her entire life being planned out for her. I hadn't heard from her in years, not since she left.

That sounds like having a good head to me. That's how I ended up here. [She waggles her fingers.] Being a "free spirit."

[Of course she had to fall in with a bad crowd and get picked up by the Knights, but eh. Bumpy roads.]

It never really bothered me, that my mother expected me to train to follow in her footsteps as well. But then again, it's hard to imagine much more exciting than becoming an Elder Druid.
