[ The castle can be a happening place, even on more mundane days. This log is for random interactions over the course of these few months. Because not everyone is into parties, ok. Characters participating in the following missions are asked to wait until their missions have concluded before tagging into things that take place chronologically after said missions: Ravenloft, Shadow Bermuda, and City of Blood If you aren't certain if that applies to you, please ask! Characters who are not currently squired in may also post, as their characters are living in the castle awaiting their ceremonies.

You are encouraged to start your own threads and tag around, and feel free to threadjack into any on-going threads that aren't specified as 'closed' in the subject lines since people can enter into rooms even in the middle of what's going on. WE ARE BIG ON THREAD-JACKING HERE. [ for the thirtieth time (that day alone), gus wonders what he did to make wynn hate him. ]

It's not karate! [ how many times do you think gus has said this already? so many. teaching shawn taekwondo seemed like a good idea at the time until he was treated to a monologue of how shawn single-handedly defeated both santa barbara chinese triad gangs with his martial arts skills.

somewhere in there, gus tripped shawn with a leg sweep and so now he's leaning down to help him up so they can start again, hefting his squire up easily. ] Say it with me: Taekwondo. Not karate. Taekwondo is Korean, karate is Japanese.

[Shawn nods slowly like he totally follows what Gus is saying, but he's going to just continue to think of himself as having THE MOST AMAZING MARTIAL ARTS POTENTIAL EVER.

It's totally a thing.]

You know, my dad never let me take karate as a kid? I think it's because he knew I was just too good.

[And he will go down with that ship.]

Or maybe because you're a fucking spazz! [ and he's just going to punch shawn twice in the face. (atk 18, 22) at least he pulls his punches? he's not about to break shawn's nose. ]

[Both those punches hit, and because he was completely caught up in his own self-aggrandizing he's forced stumbling backwards, his arms windmilling as though they might somehow gain purchase in the air, before tumbling backwards to the ground (reflex save 9). He groans as he lands, looking up at his mentor with a glare.]

Dude, I wasn't ready.

[Which he knows is a crap excuse but this is supposed to be training and he can't learn if he keeps getting jumped by his teacher.]

You're never going to be ready. Life lesson number one. Literally never going to be ready for anything.

[ he will help shawn up again though. ] Calling the martial art your learning by its proper name is a sign of respect. One you're going to start using.

[At least you can't say he doesn't learn after being punched in the face.]

[He has been listening. He just gets a little too caught up in himself sometimes.]

Thank you. [ back to business though! ] It depends fully on speed and agility, which you... sort of have. Speed is more important than size to generate power. Power increases quadratically with the speed of the attack.

[ it's literally a beautiful, fluid science. ]

We're going to start with the hyeong. [ so he shows shawn a four direction punch, block, and thrust. he's v fluid and light on his feet, but the movements are sharp and look like he could snap a neck with a thrust, i'm just saying. ]

[Shawn is going to give it his very best shot. He certainly remembers all of it (wisdom 21). His dexterity, however, leaves something to be desired (dexterity 8). He seems frustrated by it, however, because he really is trying to take this seriously.]

[ gus is heartened by shawn's effort so when he says, ] Try again. [ there's less antagonism and more confidence. ] It's something you have to learn to be comfortable with, it comes with practice. No one is going to get it the first day. It's taken me 25 years to get this good.

[Shawn nods, before trying it again, rolling the exact same dexterity check, but hey at least he's consistent (dexterity 8). He pauses, taking a deep breath before trying again and doing better (dexterity 18).]

[ gus makes him practice for a while longer, teaching him more of the basics when shawn seems to be progressing better. it still just the most basic basics, but they're the beginning of everything else and by the time they're done, gus claps him on the back, giving his shoulder a brief squeeze. ]

Better. But we can end here for the day. I've got sake in the woods if you want an after work out drink.

[Shawn brightens a bit at that, before nodding in agreement.]

Sure! Sounds like fun.
