[ The castle can be a happening place, even on more mundane days. This log is for random interactions over the course of these few months. Because not everyone is into parties, ok. Characters participating in the following missions are asked to wait until their missions have concluded before tagging into things that take place chronologically after said missions: Ravenloft, Shadow Bermuda, and City of Blood If you aren't certain if that applies to you, please ask! Characters who are not currently squired in may also post, as their characters are living in the castle awaiting their ceremonies.

[Sweets gets briefed on most of the more complicated missions the Knights go on, in case he's needed in an official capacity, but he's going to try not to use that to his advantage here. Right now, he is coming to Paige as a friend, in case she needs someone to talk to, but for the most part, he just wants to see her.

He's slow on his approach, taking the time to give her dog a bit of love once he's close enough, before glancing over to the large piece of jewelry hanging around her neck.]

That's definitely a statement peace.

[His tone is friendly, maybe slightly teasing, but she doesn't have to tell him anything she doesn't want to. He just can't help but notice.]

[she turns a bit red when she hears his voice, dropping the icon so that it thuds back against her chest, as she looks up.] Lance, I-

[she has no idea how she wanted to finish that sentence, so her eyes fall back down to the holy symbol, currently placed right beside her own harp-shaped symbol of Milil, pinned to her shirt.]

I'm afraid if I let it out of my sight, something will happen to it. It's not mine to keep.

[Now he's curious. He moves slowly to go sit next to her on the bench, partially to get a better look at it, and partially just to be a comforting presence.]

What is it?

It's a holy relic from Barovia. One of the things we needed to defeat that awful vampire who has control of that land. I think he may have sent us away when he did, so we'd take the relics with us and he'd be unstoppable.

[she flattens her palms against her knees.] It keeps me up at night sometimes. [that and the fact that their hesitation caused Strahd to send a powerful vampire into this world and who knows what will become of that?]

[Sweets watches her, considering her words for a moment as she speaks. He can't really blame her - having the weapon to stop someone but not the means to do it can make things difficult.]

I'm sure you did the best you could while you were there. And if you have the relics, there's no saying you won't be able to find your way back again and stop him for good.

[Lance Sweets, always the optimist.]

Well, that's the idea... Poor Aurelius left his sister... or some version of his sister... behind there, and Strahd is obsessed with her. [she rubs her head.] It's all very confusing.

[she smiles at him weakly.] Are most people's first missions this intense?

... No. Well, at least not in my experience, anyway. My first mission was pretty straight forward. I definitely was not traveling between planes.

[In fact, the fact that she did on her first mission is kind of insane, but he's not going to say that out loud.]

But look at it this way - at least every mission after this will probably be cake?

[she laughs awkwardly.] I don't even know if I can focus on another mission with this one left unfinished. I mean... Maybe it'll be good for me, and I certainly won't ask Wynn to take me out of rotation until this is dealt with. Missions always need clerics. [she rubs her harp pin instinctively.] It just feels wrong that we didn't actually fix anything, and maybe only made them worse.

Not every mission ends well, or goes as smoothly as we would hope. But some things can't be solved overnight either. There's one mission group that's been working against the same threat for over three years now. As much as we would like to tie things up cleanly with a bow on top in under a day, it doesn't always work out that way.

[Unfortunately. Things have a way of getting complicated before they can get better.]

But that doesn't mean you won't get a second chance to make things right.

Oh my goodness. [she blanches a bit- the thought of dealing with the same threat for so long just seems horrible and debilitating. What must those knights be like to stomach that?]

It's all logic versus feelings, I guess. Logically, I know it has to work out, because we won't let it not, but feelings-wise, I just really want to break Strahd's stupid face.

[her expression turns sulky.] I was doing so well at managing my anger too.

[He chuckles softly, not maliciously, just at the way she phrased it.]

I can't say I blame you for wanting to break his face. He sounds like he's the kind of bad guy that would make anyone angry.

[There's a pause as his look softens.]

But I'm glad you came back safe. That's the important thing. Anger management is usually a work in progress anyway.

[she flushes a little and looks away.] Considering we lost Sir Dovan the minute we arrived, I'm glad we did too. Willow, Henry, and Aurelius are so young. And Nathan...

[she makes an exaggerated "hnnngh" noise.] Nathan is not what I expected from anyone here.

[It doesn't take much to pick up on what she's layin' down when it comes to Nathan (sense motive 18). He smirks a bit, before nodding.]

Well, it takes all kinds to make a knighthood. Even if some of them don't seem very knightly.

It's not even that he doesn't seem knightly. It's that he has no... no... Decorum? That works. Decorum. He doesn't have any of that. But he can be surprisingly noble in his own way, so I guess he must have had something to earn him a spot. [her cheeks turn red again- this time in a mixture of embarrassment and slight anger.] Though any man that makes jabs about a woman's... character because of her choice of weapon is...

[a jackass. that's what she wants to say. she won't though.]

[Sweets cringes at first, because yeah, that can make things awkward.]

Yeah. No, I totally agree with you. Making those kinds of comments is almost inviting them to use it on you - and not in a fun way.

I don't really like thinking about how there's a fun way to use a whip. [Not to kink shame, but man she has smacked herself with her whip before and it hurts.] Though I'm sure I'm going to encounter many people in the field who do think about that and it's going to be very unfortunate.

[she leans back a bit.] Fortunately, I had Hasmed enchant it.

[He smirks a bit at that because yeah, he wouldn't consider it fun either. But some people have their kinks, and while Sweets doesn't share them, he won't shame them for it either.]

Always a good plan. It still amazes me the kind of advantages people can use magic for sometimes.

Oh, I know. Some of the mages here are just so clever too.

[she's grown up around magic, but even so, magic is different depending on who wields it and that's fascinating.]

[He nods in agreement.]

Yeah, they are. It's pretty much like everything you can think of is at your disposal.
