[It takes Spike a while to find the dungeons (search 9) so by the time he gets there, he's extra grumpy. Not that he was in a spectacular mood as it was, considering who he was going to see.

Once he gets there, he stares at Kyp for a little while before speaking.]

Not enough to be a miserable bastard who got me and Myri tortured, is it? Had to be a bloody rapist as well.

[ kyp does not... look impressed by the word. ] Please.

Do us both a favor and spare me the moral outrage. You have no idea what happened between Elena and I.

[Spike glowers at him.] Can't even admit it? You slept with her wearing my face. What part of that's not rape?

It wasn't like I was wearing your actual skin, you know. Think of it like a... a costume. [ he gestures casually to accentuate the word ] A costume of someone she had no romantic interest in previously, I might point out. The person she decided to be with that night? Emerged entirely out of the connection she felt then and there, in that moment. It didn't matter what they looked like, who people thought they were, any of that exterior crap.

[ he frowns and leans against the back of his cell, arms folded ] You wouldn't get it, because you live in a world that's come to believe all that matters. A superficial reality that keeps you tied down to every impression everyone's ever gotten of you. [ he raises his thick eyebrows at spike ] To you, you'll always be a vampire, because people will never forget you're a vampire. They can't remove it from the equation, and ever really focus on who Spike is, by himself, without the weight of all that on top of it. You can't just up and be a human tomorrow so that you can experience people reacting to you for you. Not unless you bend the truth, keep who you really are secret from them. [ he points at his chest meaningfully ] I can up and change, moment to moment. So why the hell wouldn't I? Why wouldn't I want to be sure that Elena would want me for whatever I was: doppelganger, human, vampire, you name it. That she'd always feel that connection, and no matter where we ended up, no matter who we became?

[ he leans forward slightly, a dark challenge in his eyes. ] She'd always want me.

[He leans forward as well, not breaking eye contact. Kyp's lecture doesn't really mean much to him. Who he really is is a vampire. He's only ever regretted the time he lied about it. It's not the exterior part that bothers him. In another circumstance, in another world where Elena knew who Kyp was the whole time, if for some reason they'd decided to turn into him for kinky reasons, he'd mostly be amused. But pretending to be him? That's all exterior crap. And that Kyp's pretending it's anything else makes Spike want to tear out his throat even more than usual.]

Funny how that connection came when you went in as someone who's dead sexy and a bloke. Not Myri. Or even... [He tilts his head, shifting his facial features until his face takes on the monstrous vampire appearance. He grins, letting his fangs show.] Me on a bad day. Don't act like she did it cause of some bollocks connection between the two of you. She's a teenager, and I'm someone she knows and trusts.

[The last word comes out as a growl. And that's the crux of it. Spike wouldn't have put a move on Elena because she's young, because she trusts him, because even if she said yes, it would probably be a terrible idea. Kyp clearly had no such hang-ups.]

[ he actually rolls his eyes at that, looking to the side. ] Never mind. I don't know why I bother trying to explain to you people.

You forget, I was there with the two of you all that time when you were teaching her. Didn't see any connection then, or was I all that was stopping you?

Don't take my word on it. [ he levels his gaze at spike, a challenge in his eyes ] Look Elena in the eyes and ask her yourself. She felt it, the same as I did.

[Spike looks disgusted.] That's the last thing I'll be doing. You know she's barely left her room? Whatever connection you may have had certainly hasn't made her feel any better about the situation.

She feels guilty, for vouching for me, assuring you all this kind of thing wouldn't happen.

Yeah, tell yourself that's all it is. That help you sleep at night?

[ he rolls his eyes backward, tonking his head against the wall lightly behind him and pinching his nose] Your narrow view of the world and what constitutes moral or immoral decisions has no bearing on my own perspective. What's reviled by one race as unnatural - evil - might be praised by the next. There is no fixed universal mandate of right and wrong; there are only beliefs and accepted cultural conventions. [ he spreads his hands, looking back at spike unapologetically ] I'm of no culture, and every culture. What's natural for me is deceit, as natural as breathing is to humans. If you're going to chastise a chameleon for changing its colors, I'm afraid you're the one who looks foolish, not me.

There's not a culture on earth where it's ok to take someone's face and life. And I don't give a damn about blood cultural relativity, in this castle's culture? Rape's wrong. And you deserve to bloody burn for it.

So light the pyre already. Especially if the alternative is hearing all this day in and day out.

What? Afraid you might start to believe it?

Fear is for humans. You really think a doppelganger is afraid of change?

I think everyone's afraid of something. And just because you can change your face doesn't mean you'd want to change your mind.

[Spike thinks maybe this is what it means to not have a soul. To not give a damn how much you hurt people. To ignore all logic and twist it to mean what you want it to.

But then we wouldn't be having this fun chat now, would we.

And Elena would be able to leave her room without being coaxed. So many bloody bonuses.

I wonder how much coaxing it will take to keep her from coming down to see me.

[He rolls his eyes.]

She hasn't yet. But it's only a matter of time. [ he seems to be telling the truth, at least. ]
