[ gar spends a lot of time in the library. gar does much research.

gar also needs to take a break every once in awhile.

gar, that does not look like research.

as a matter of fact, she's curled up in a corner couch of the library, utterly absorbed in the beat-up paperback in hand, which she's trying to artfully obscure with her hand but failing. the cover art looks very dated, and depicts some kind of incredibly muscled guy in what looks exactly like Knights of the Silver Dragon armor, leaning on a sword with a woman in a state of semi-undress clinging tightly to him.

the title, which a good spot check can glean is "Knights of Passion".

[Well, Des crit-failed his spot check, so he probably thinks she's reading Flowers for Algernon for how much he cares. Missed opportunities. Mostly he's here to see what the eggheads have figured out about the case, so Gar's reading material is the last thing on his mind.]

So has the case been thrown wide open and we'll probably only be doing this for at least another year?

[rationalizes]

[ gar only blanches for half a second, lowering the book strategically so that the cover lies on her lap as she stares up at des. ] Oh! Er...

I'm afraid we're in a bit of a holding pattern at the moment. Waiting on some reconnaissance from Jack and Sir Bancroft regarding Andres Isle.

[Des perks up.] Assuming they get anything decent, is that our next stop?

[rationalizes]

I... I'm not certain about our. The island has been off-limits to Knights for years, ever since our last Dragon's Claw, Sir Ellison, went missing in action while investigating the Prime Minister. Apparently, Dimitris knows of our existence, and as you might imagine, he's not very sympathetic to our goals.

Obviously not. I already told you before where I stand on this. [He flops on the nearest chair.] There's no reason why I can't go.

[rationalizes]

Wynn doesn't have the authority to stop you, no... But there's always the danger of your intercession destroying any ground the Dragon's Claws have made.

I'm not that big of an idiot. [He runs his hands through his hair.] I'm just saying someone will eventually have to go in. Unless you're planning to leave it to the Dragon's Claws and risk losing two more.

[rationalizes]

[ she pales at the suggestion ] They've already been infiltrating the Island here and there for the past year, trying to find a way to breach his defenses. He's likely to be holding the Talisman at the castle - the ancient ancestral home of the Andres family whom he once served. He's taken it as his own residence now.

And when they figure out how... [He shrugs.] I'm not associated with the knights. Anyone would believe me if I said I was working on my own terms. If I screw up, it's on me and Wynn won't even have blood on his hands.

[He folds his arms behind the back of his head.] The worst that would happen is he changes the locks on the doors or moves the talisman, but that's a risk you'd take if you sent anyone from here in, plus the added bonus of them deciding to attack the knights directly, which they're already doing.

[Another shrug.] I'm volunteering.

[ her eyebrows lift slightly ] That's very... very brave of you, Des, but we couldn't - wouldn't - ask that of you. Even Wynn wouldn't. Dimitris doesn't have a roster of who is or is not a member of the Knighthood - you've spent enough time with us in public that he's likely to assume you are, no matter how much you might rightly deny it.

I was brought on this mission because I know the sort of things that happen when that talisman is involved and because I have a personal investment in the case. Wynn knows I have to see it through. So however this gets done, he'd better ask it of me. Somehow, someway, but there's no ending to this that doesn't involve me ending up on that island.

I wouldn't be that stupid unless I had no other choice. If Wynn trusts me enough to even give me a standing invite to this place, then he can trust that, too. It's not bravery, Gar. It's a loose end. I'm only here because of that fucking thing.

[rationalizes]

It might be why you came in the first place, but I don't quite believe it's the only reason you're still interested in this case. [ she says it gently and leaves it at that. ] But I'm certain you're right about Wynn, at least. He'll know best, either way.

[ francesca occasionally takes to the library in her free time, as well, usually for mission-related research, but sometimes for pleasure. although it's not generally the kind of pleasure gar is currently engaging in...

she catches the title (spot 24) of the book, and she immediately knows the author's name that will follow. she smiles fondly, the significance of both the writer in her own memories, as well as this being gar's choice of indulgence tickles her. ]

A Daphne Woodlark classic, I see.

[ ahahahaha gar crit failed so being called out makes her all but drop the book as she looks up with bright red cheeks sjdf;ajf ] Er, um, someone must have... left it laying out...

[ her grin widens at the excuse and she moves to take a seat next to gar ] It's not as if we all haven't read them.

However, whatever the rumors, I'm fairly certain they're not actually based on true accounts.

Were they really written by a member of the Knighthood?

She was a knight, yes. At least for a while. [ gossip gossip gossip ]

Did something happen to her?

I believe it was a forced resignation. She knew the consequences of publishing classified information about the Knights, making it available to the public, and she chose to do it regardless.

I'd sometimes wondered how anyone ever got Wynn to sign off on this. The details are... all quite familiar.

Just goes to show, not much has changed around here in the last hundred years.

Somewhat astonishing, yes. [ look she thinks it's gr8, cuz she's a baby ] She really was a fantastic writer, er, subject matter aside. There's so much life in her characters.

She had quite a bit of spirit, herself. [ she smiles fondly ] And a lot of spunk.
