[he leaves the "and then I'm out" unspoken. It doesn't matter anymore. They could be on this case for the rest of time for all they know.] But say you're right and he did get out, I'm still waiting for the heartfelt note. You know that's more his style. Rafael Giovanni doesn't just leave. He'd be doing to you what he let Jade do to him. And given how he is, d'you think he could've put you through that pain?

[ She arches her eyebrows like hmmm food for thought. Then tilts her head, relenting. It sounds pompous, out loud, to say she's so difficult to walk away from that he can't even say goodbye properly. A sigh tumbles past her lips, and she walks over to take the polearm from Des. ]

Whatever it is that's keeping him away, it's not good. I prefer the version of not good where he's okay, even if it means ... the worst for any "us" there could have been.

[Des releases the weapon as she takes it from him, frowning deeply, and lets his hands fall to his sides. That lasts for a second because now he's free to gesticulate.] I'd say he's probably safer, but safe is so relative around anyone connected to this shit. And he's got the same enemies we do... Plus his own.

[AT LEAST HE'S NOT ACTIVELY SUICIDAL ANYMORE???] Either way, there's no harm in asking. You find out what you already assumed or it turns out better than expected.

Des, don't get the wrong idea about this. I'm not expecting to ... [ Her lips purse together, unable to formulate the end of that sentence. She tries another angle. ] The only reason I want to see him is so that I can make sure he's okay.

And not mind-controlled or otherwise fucked up. I know. I get it. [You're busting his balls here, Blondie.] A lot of shit could be going on under the surface, and they're expecting people to see what they wanna see.

So any idea when these tickets of Alainn's will be for?

Probably something in December, ideally. Like I said, she can't promise a miracle and we might get nothing, but we can spend the holidays breaking into a concert hall. I don't want to deal with concert security, but if we can escape Iscariot agents, then this should be a cakewalk.

I don't know. If I had to choose between fighting Iscariot agents, and sneaking past Isabella ...

[ That lady is fucking terrifying ok. But Buffy's pretty obviously kidding because there has not been a single moment when she's considered letting Isa keep her from caring about Rafael ok. ]

I find myself surprisingly untortured. [UNLIKE SOME PEOPLE, he can achieve closure.] Still pissed off over it, yeah, but I'm not running away from any attempt at having feelings again.

[surprisingly, jade's name doesn't even seem to make des flinch anymore. there's a faint glimmer of sadness, but little else. it's a surprisingly manpain free area.]

Barring three months of severe regression, I'd like to think he could say the same.

[ Could, but won't, because he's not here. He's with Isabella, as it happens. She's probably thrilled about those three months of distance. Buffy buries the jab of petty jealousy. ]

[But that whole thing at Burt's club had felt pretty final... of course THEN THERE WAS ISCARIOTGATE and the Jade reveals that follow.] But, I mean, if he were really regressing, Blade would come down with a bad case of the Black Scourge.

He's smarter than that. If he did lose it, he wouldn't let them pin the Scourge stuff on him. Not after they put it on Jade.

[ He wouldn't let that besmirching of her name have been for nothing. It'd be a stain on her memory. ]

More likely we wouldn't find the body.

Good thing Blade's touring, then. [Which brings him to another topic he should probably bridge.] I've been looking into public appearances of Crombe- both as himself and as Chad. Turns out "Chad's" scheduled to make an appearance at the Grammy's in February, but that's as close to anything as I can find.

[Sounds like bad news to him.]

What are the chances Blade gets announced among the performers?

[ Because she has a feeling that's one way to mind control way too many people, after New York. ]

Probably about as good as Rafael's chances. [He gives Buffy an imploring look.] And you saw that shit on the news when we were in Italy- what Blade did to those people. If he pulls that shit near Rafael...

[He shakes his head.] Why d'you think when I couldn't contact him, I jumped to Blade and not Iscariot?

Because the only thing stronger than your grudge against Father Anderson is your grudge against Keijen Blade?

Okay. One? There are very few people I hate more than that Highland fuck. [and boy does it sound like he means it too.] And two? It doesn't matter what I feel. It matters how Blade feels and Blade and Rafael aren't best buddies.

His list of enemies is a lot longer than his list of friends. That doesn't explain jumping to one conclusion.

I also felt Sarandis might be feeling a little like retaliation, and we all know that his friends are Blade's backers. [he shrugs.] It made more sense than the other at the time.
