Precisely the reason my father began the research in the first place. [Such a daddy's girl, tbh.] It's harder now, working in secret like we do. Before, I had an entire network of facilities- the global Sanctuary network. In many ways, it wasn't that unlike Wynn's job. Perhaps that's why I'm in no hurry to take it from him.

[She stifles a small laugh as she takes another drink.]

But what about you, Zarad? I'm afraid I'm at an incredible disadvantage. I know little more of you than your name and your connection to the birthday boy, here.

That doesn't make it any easier. [in response to zarad, which he punctuates with a hand on his knee. at helen's question, he snickers and takes a swig of his drink.] He likes his mysteries.

When you've lived a very long, varied life, questions of identity become a curious thing, as I'm sure you also know. I've been a lot of people and a lot of things.

I'm not sure any of them entirely define me.

If you recall, I wasn't looking for a definition. [She lifts her glass to gesture towards him with it. She shifts her gaze to Des and raises her eyebrow.]

Mysteries, I take it? [She won't be too offended that she's not invited into the inner circle right away.]

I can assure you both that I'm not looking for any secrets to uncover. I simply wish to get to know you better. I've become rather fond of Des, as I'm sure you can understand. And you're a large part of his life, so it's only natural to want to get to know you as well.

[idek if that needs a diplomacy check but she got a nat 20 so hollaaaaa]

[des throws up his hands like nuh-uh you two can do the verbal swordplay.]

Well in that case, what would you like to know?

Anything, really. An interesting fact that you don't normally think to share, perhaps. We could make a game of it.

[Yeah that won't end badly.]

If you're suggesting three old as the hills people start playing "I Never," we're gonna be drunk in three minutes.

[ he grins at des cheekily ] I think I'd have a hard time with that particular game, anyway. My "I've never" list just might be shorter than the other way round.

I was thinking more along the lines of each of us picking things one or more of the others may not know. I recognize that there may be no secrets with bedfellows, but... Well, depending on how many drinks I have, I may be able to entertain you with a story or two.

You have no idea. [Des picks his whiskey back up and knocks back the rest of his.] I'm at least 85% certain Rhett Butler was based on me.

[WHAT. NOT MANY PEOPLE KNOW THAT. Because it's a blind assumption. He can't exactly prove it.] Just the character type. Not the whole mooning over Scarlet part. I'm just saying I was a lot like that back then.

[shruuuug.]

[ zarad barks a laugh at that ] You would think that. [ he throws back the rest of his drink ] Well, let's see. Last year I roped Des into a game of strip poker with some friends of mine.

He didn't win. [ he's going to make you regret playing along with this game, des. stories about him can also be embarrassing stories about you. ]

[She starts to roll her eyes with a light laugh at Des' comment, taking a drink, but nearly choking on it as Zarad adds in his fun fact. Don't mind her looking over at Des and just... letting her imagination go places.

Ahem.]

Well- I hope you learned your lesson at least. You know, the last time I played poker- strip or no... was around the turn of the century. Albie was still working in the patent office in Bern at the time, but we convinced him to come out and play once or twice.

[Look all of her friends are famous scientists that she sometimes gives adorable nicknames to. I don't know what to tell you.]

You just namedrop famous historical figures to make me spit my whiskey at you, don't you? [he says that to her, but he's headtilting at Zarad like wtf you traitor.] And for the record, I very rarely learn my lesson. I'd happily take that gamble again.

[yeah, it's such a crisis for you, isn't it des. being naked around your boyfriend and his friends. wow. such tragedy.]

You know, a birthday does seem like a good occasion for a rematch. Especially if your dear friend here hasn't gotten to play in so long. [ /trolls forever. he reaches up to draw his collar down, revealing des' necklace, that's he's... still wearing. ] That's how I wound up with this, last time.

[Some lingering effects from that crit fail... Helen just flushes intensely and works on finishing her drunk rather than answering. Gee it sort of sounded like an invite to get naked with them. Sign her up.]

[While Helen is otherwise distracted by her drink, Des reaches over to take a hold of his necklace and pull on it a bit.] Now see, you're making her blush.

[It's funny how he doesn't sound the least bit like he's scolding him. More like he's trying not to laugh.]

[ he just smirks on, reaching up to meddle lightly with the sleeve of des' arm that's tugging at the necklace, as he looks over at her again. ] I didn't hear her complaining.

[wow des. You're the one who knows why she would be flustered over here. Seeing them continue to joke, Helen raises her hand to signal the bartender to bring her another drink.]

I'm right here, gentlemen. And while the prospect does sound...tantalizing, I'm more in mind to make this night about our guest of honor. [she means des of course. It's his birthday after all. And based on the conversation at the wedding? She's not quite sure if he wouldn't be more inclined for strip games just with his man.]

[well, things are clearly different with Zarad RIGHT HERE, but Des does cant his head in confusion a bit, and looks mildly sheepish, because hahaha he's doing the thing again, but still...

slowly he untangles his fingers from Zarad's necklace and looks back over at Helen.]

I'm not complaining.

[ des' response causes zarad's lips to curve up further, and his eyes glitter with mischief as he raises an eyebrow at helen. He lifts one hand to brush his fingers through the back of des' hair casually. ] You might be surprised by what he's into.

[Her laugh this time may be a little bitter considering Des sort of rejected her pretty firmly. And while she understands the reasons why? She's not so sure she would be all that surprised by what he's into- or rather what he's not into. Meaning her. Dear god where is that drink? This is depressing.]

Is that so?

[Also just sort of squinting at how the tone has changed so suddenly. Shes not really suspicious of foul play here but more just going "wat" (sense motive 35)]

[she definitely gets the impression- from des anyway- that zarad being RIGHT HERE changes things- that it might have been more a question of fidelity than a total lack of attraction. the sheepish and apologetic look he's giving her pretty much confirms that.

probably explains why he's been so hella awkward about it too.]

It's because someone is a terrible influence. [he jerks his thumb slightly in zarad's direction.]

[ meanwhile zarad just seems so casually genuine about all this, that it's clear he's just interested in a good time here, alright. ] I prefer to think of it as having expanded your horizons.

Well- this is hardly a setting for a good game of cards. [At least not if they plan to get naked while they play...]

Perhaps we can buy a bottle of our own to take back to your room?

[This may end terribly but uh- they're both attractive guys and she's been lonely so she could use a distraction with the possibility of a more intimate sort of company.]
