[Well, David does. No one should be surprised there (pop culture 14).]

He's a pretty knowledgeable guy. Him, and a lot of practical experience, anyway.

Of course you know Norm Abrams. Enlighten me on this practical experience because my This Old House knowledge is not cutting it.

[he smirks slightly before taking a step forward.]

Go with the grain of the wood. Start with a coarser grain to get out the blemishes, before switching to something finer to soften the wood. The more you get out with the coarser paper will make the rest easier later.

[ squint. ]

That sounds like so much work.

[ but look at her rifling through her sand paper and then staring at david blankly like "um". ]

[he smirks a bit.]

Well, sanding is a lot of work. But most people consider the end result worth the effort.

[He pauses as he goes over the sandpaper, before picking up one of the coarser grains and holding it out to her.]

Feel how rough that is?

[ she touches it, making a face. ]

Uh-huh. John Wayne toilet paper.

That's the kind of stuff you want to use to get rid of the flaws.

[He moves his hand gently over the surface of the wood for a moment, before he finds a knot that makes the surface of the wood a little uneven. He stops and then starts to go to work, using the coarse paper to wear it down so that it's more in line with the rest of the wood (craft 14, I think).]

Once that's done, then the second end should go a lot easier.

Ooh, I get it. Like layers. [ watch as she just... watches him for awhile :) ]

[Yep, he has no problem working on this for her. Look at Mr. Chivalry, helping out the pregnant lady. Eventually he'll switch to the finer sandpaper but for right now he's taking his time working out the flaws.]

Tricksy gods. That was super helpful of you though. I'm sure the people being mind controlled were grateful. And embarrassed. I would be embarrassed too.

Yeah, considering he was the prime minister and brainwashed into giving up his country, I'm sure we saved him a lot of problems.

Yeah. No idea why he chose Russia of all places, though.

It's big and has a huge population and that one time Napoleon tried to invade the snow slapped him in the face like "bitch, no". I mean, in modern times almost no one has successfully invaded Russia. Poland in like 1605 for twenty minutes. Maybe he liked the challenge. Or vodka.

[He shrugs.]

Whatever it was, he's gone now.

[He hopes.]

Well yeah, gods get bored easily. They're so old and ...old. [ nailed it. she's so informative and knowledgeable, yo. ] Probably had a horse he needed to bang.

[He laughs.]

I guess we all have a type.

I hope your type isn't horses too, 'cause otherwise I'd have to stage an intervention right now.

[He laughs softly before shaking his head.]

No. Not even remotely.

Thank god for that. I was in New York once and I saw one of those police horses? [ her eyes widen and she shakes her head like that cat all no no no no no no no. ]

[He laughs.]

Yeah, I would definitely take a pass there.

[And with that he'll step back and run his hand over the smoother, softer wood.]

How's that feel?

[ TOUCHES GENTLY. ] ...okay, so Norm Abrams was right, wood can be soft. That's so fucking weird.
