[ The castle can be a happening place, even on more mundane days. This log is for random interactions over the course of November and December.

You are encouraged to start your own threads and tag around, and feel free to threadjack into any on-going threads that aren't specified as 'closed' in the subject lines since people can enter into rooms even in the middle of what's going on. WE ARE BIG ON THREAD-JACKING HERE. You can also specify 'single thread', meaning you want only one response for all participants, rather than multi-thread, where a number of different scenes/threads can be done as replies to the top prompt.]

[ The little roll of Lydia's eyes happens because she's mentally correcting him. She can't throw an arm from her hip, and she points out— ] Anatomically speaking? Throwing an arm from my hip is impossible. [ But she twists her upper body with the punch, putting more force behind it by taking advantage of her weight and momentum all the same. She knows what he's getting at: she's not an idiot. All the same, when her wrapped hands come in contact with the bag, it barely budges. The raw strength simply isn't there. ]

[personal profile] generaldavideus 2015-03-01 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
[He's not really looking for strength right now. He's mostly looking for form. Strength is something that will be built over time, and there are certain parts of the body that don't actually need a whole lot of pressure to cause damage to. He has a feeling once Lydia gets that down, she'll be able to manage fairly well on her own.]

And throwing your actual arm would be quite messy. Are you going to pick at my semantics the entire time?
immuno: (i want back my virginity.)

[personal profile] immuno 2015-03-02 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
I might.

[ It would be nice to have the reminder of what she is capable of while she's busy hammering away at what she's not so good at. Her fists are curled, thumbs not the outside of her middle knuckle, not tucked inside her grip, and she's letting her first two knuckles come in contact with the bag itself. Decent form, at least, even if her stance is narrow and her hips are facing slightly away from the bag still. ]

[personal profile] generaldavideus 2015-03-08 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Then I'll be careful.

[He's not above letting her know what she's good at, but it's also his job to tell her where she's not as well. He lets her get a few more hits in before nodding and taking a step back from the bag.]

Try turning your hips to face the bag a little more.

[He moves around to stand next to her, taking his stance and throwing a few quick jabs.]

The straighter you're lined up, the less of an axis you'll have to waste momentum on.

[He does his best to put it in words she understands. If they speak the same language, they'll probably get more done faster.]
immuno: (you have a very big.)

[personal profile] immuno 2015-03-09 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm surprised you know what that word means.

[ If she means axis or momentum, she'll never say. But she will straighten up, sizing him up so she can match his stance, taking careful measure with where to fit her limbs.

It feels awkward, as anything does the first time, and she has to spend as much energy thinking about keeping her body parts in the right place as she does getting the movement when she takes a few more jabs forward. In fact, she forgets herself and tucks her thumbs inside her fist for a few of the jabs because she's too busy focusing on where her hips are facing.

I took physics. And eleventh grade algebra. And I hung out with a guy who was a lot like you for a while.

[He doesn't remember his name or his face, but he remembers the know-it-all science based attitude. The kind of guy who would build a telegraph in exchange for safety and bribe metal workers with a chemistry text book in exchange for weapons.

For right now he'll let the punches slide in favor of the rest. It's easier to fix that than it is your entire stance.]

Good. That's better.
immuno: (of all of your preaching.)

[personal profile] immuno 2015-03-10 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
I fail to see—[ she speaks between huffed breaths as her fists strike the heavy bag ]—how throwing a punch is going to help me when someone twice my size and, like, five hundred pounds is waving his assault rifle around. [ that's not at all what halloween was like, but iT COULD HAPPEN it's now in the realm of possibility, for lydia. ]
generaldavideus: (Default)

[personal profile] generaldavideus 2015-03-10 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Basics all start somewhere. You learn how to move, how your body reacts in a combat situation, and it becomes instinct. It gives you room to think.

[He pauses, holding out a hand to steady the bag and stop her.]

Once you can think, you can worry about where you're punching as opposed to how. Human joints don't take a whole lot of pressure to cause damage. You're small but that also means you're fast and can move easier than he can. Punch the right place at the right time, and you can effectively cripple someone before they get a chance to maneuver something as awkward and cumbersome as an assault rifle around to shoot you.
immuno: (would you do anything for me?)

[personal profile] immuno 2015-03-14 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
You can really teach me how to do all that?

[ She sounds doubtful, but she does stop hitting the bag when he stills it, lifting her gaze to his face. ]
generaldavideus: ([david] expectant face)

[personal profile] generaldavideus 2015-03-18 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
[He nods.]

If you're willing to put in the time, yeah. Plus, learning how to move can be transferred to any kind of weapon, whether it's a knife, a sword or a gun - it all starts with building up the muscle memory so that you don't have to think about it.

[Everything after this is building on the basics she learns here. It's like math - she can't do complex equations without first knowing how to add.]
immuno: (i killed a dog so smart and rare.)

[personal profile] immuno 2015-03-21 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
[ She hesitates, pulling her lower lip between her teeth and studying the heavy bag with some deep thought for a moment. Then, she nods, seeming to settle on the decision. Her knuckles jab back into it as she sighs out. ] It's algebra. [ Strength training gives her the tools. ]
generaldavideus: (Default)

[personal profile] generaldavideus 2015-03-22 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly.

[He moves to steady the bag again for her as he makes a face.]

I hated algebra.

[He didn't really have the attention span for it, and he always seemed to miss the parts in the middle that seemed crucial to solving the equation properly.]
immuno: (electra heart.)

[personal profile] immuno 2015-03-22 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
And I hate the smell of sweat and vinyl. [ All of which is involved in training. Ugh. Her criticism comes out in a contradictorily saccharine voice. ] Look. We're bonding.
generaldavideus: (Default)

[personal profile] generaldavideus 2015-03-24 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
[He laughs a bit at that.]

It could be worse. The guy who taught me was morally opposed to bathing.
immuno: (mouth but don't say a word.)

[personal profile] immuno 2015-03-28 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
I take it you were squired to Sir Lan.

[ Reputations get around. Also, Lydia has a great knowledge (local) check. ]
generaldavideus: ([david] oh yeah)

[personal profile] generaldavideus 2015-03-28 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
[His mouth works for a moment before he nods.]

Well, I was, but he wasn't the one to teach me how to fight. My teacher was a guy named Sven Swordeater.
immuno: (gotta be looking pure.)

[personal profile] immuno 2015-03-28 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
He sounds even more charming.

[ She doesn't even bother making an exceptionally sassy face because that comment stands for itself. Wow. Sven Swordeater. ]
generaldavideus: ([david] laugh)

[personal profile] generaldavideus 2015-03-28 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
[He laughs.]

Vikings can be a bit literal. He earned that name the hard way.
immuno: (i'm the girl you'd die for.)

[personal profile] immuno 2015-03-28 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
By eating his sword? I wouldn't think you'd have anyone to learn from, if that were true.
generaldavideus: ([david] bring it)

[personal profile] generaldavideus 2015-03-28 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
It wasn't his sword.

[He holds up one hand, drawing it lengthwise across his face.]

When he was in battle, another person caught him across the mouth and he survived.
immuno: (a player.)

[personal profile] immuno 2015-03-28 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
I take it your world wasn't one with clerics.
generaldavideus: (Default)

[personal profile] generaldavideus 2015-03-28 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
No. Not a lot of modern medicine either. There was magic though, when you could find it.

[but a lot of it was few and far between and rather uncontrollable.]

Most of it was held by the gods.
immuno: (into a young girl.)

[personal profile] immuno 2015-03-28 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
Sounds about right. A great deal of the magic in this world is a gift from the gods, anyway. There's nothing to confirm that it's what sorcerers and wizards draw on, admittedly, but given that even they lose their magic when the Veil closes, it's a safe bet, given where the gods are stationed, so to speak.
generaldavideus: (Default)

[personal profile] generaldavideus 2015-03-28 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
[He nods.]

I wasn't in Faerun, though. My gods were of the traditional Greek-Norse-Aztec variety. And they ... pretty much sucked. I spent a lot of my time there cleaning up their messes.
immuno: (rule number two.)

[personal profile] immuno 2015-03-30 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that would hold with the mythology.

[ Said to the tune of "I don't know what you expected." Girl's well-read, ok, she knows what fuck-ups Zeus and Odin are. ]

Although, I thought in the case of the Norse, they generally had Loki clean up their messes for them? The Aztecs mostly just tried human sacrifice and hoped for the best.
