Hoard. I work mainly in researching the various creatures that tumble through the Veil that we may not fully understand.

We had Watchers back home. They did about the same thing, but just so Slayers could head out and kill them.

Not quite the same as my work, then. [She says with a little shake of her head.]

While I do understand that deadly force may be necessary in such scenarios, it's alwyss my goal to find a way to leave the creature alive. Confined, perhaps, but I do my best not to kill anything I come across unless it's absolutely necessary.

[Faith tries not to look at her weird. Faith had said 'about the same thing' and then clarified the whole rest of it, but if Helen wants to get overly defensive about her research - that's cool.]

Well, the research still got done - no matter what had to be done in the end.

[Helen's just a little sensitive about the subject since talking with Dean about his hunting and then taking him on as a squire. Dealing with his stubborn ass will make anyone defensive.]

We'll just have to agree to disagree there. [Researching creatures for the sole purpose of finding a way to kill them? Not really the sort of work that Helen will ever get behind. Capturing, containing, studying... those were much more humane ways of dealing with dangerous creatures, in her opinion. There were certainly times when lethal force was necessary, but it should never be the first response, in her opinion.]

[Faith shrugs, she doesn't get how they're disagreeing - mostly because the things she's had to kill -- pretty sure they needed to be killed and they've made exceptions along the line and the research is still boring book research. If Faith found out that the whole capture, contain, study thing was going on she wouldn't be too happy about that one. Especially since she'd consider herself something that might fall under that category of unexplained.

She'll drop it though, because honestly she was never really pro-Watchers anyway.]

So what do you do here? Same thing? Look up shit on the creatures and figure out plans of action?

A great deal of it is more in reverse, actually. A few Knights make a point to bring me footage of creatures. Or blood samples. A live subject is preferable but not always manageable, depending on the mission.

[Faith nods. She figures she really just needs to figure out how to talk to smart people, because she doesn't understand how that's different than what she just said. Or how it's backwards. Or reverse. Or whatever.]

Well, you'll probably always have something to do -- especially with the way this place goes.

Oh yes. I'm never bored. I've also taken to working with some of the Knights who have abilities that they wish to explore the development of. Keeping notes on the growth of abilities can help a person understand where those powers might go in the future.

[Faith nods - she's not gonna offer herself up for any sort of experiments or studies.]

Sounds like you got it figured out, then.

I would hope that I might after this long. I've been here with the knights for about forty years now.

Forty years? What did you start when you were a baby or something?

Not quite. My lifespan is a bit longer than that of the standard human. That change occurred before I ever came through the Veil, though.

Right... so how old are you?

Two hundred and one as of a few months ago.

Did you have a big party when you turned two-hundred? [Faith is curious if it gets old after the first hundred years.]

Oh, yes. One for the record books. I don't... remember much of it, truthfully.

Hey, that says a lot about a party, though.

The hangover said more. Believe me.

Yeah, that definitely speaks volumes - and usually louder than anyone wants.

Thankfully, when you get to be my age, it's only a few birthdays that have any importance. I think it won't be until my 300th that anyone thinks to take me out for quite that big of a night.

[Faith shrugs.] When's the next one?

Not until next August. We have awhile yet.

Plenty of time to plan a party.
