Aye, a few years now. Good, honest work- which isn't the norm for the likes of me. [Thoster gives a grin and a loud laugh to follow that.] But I've come to love it, truthfully.

You always this happy? Not that I'm complaining, makes a change from all the miserable bastards out there.

Oh, not always. But I try my best to find every reason to be in good spirits. Hardly seems a good use of my time to dwell in the negative.

Yeah? Well I'll have a pint of whatever you're drinking.

[ Matt maybe used to try and see the bright side of things, but now? Well he's been struggling with it for a while. ]

Now there's an idea. Could use a drink after a long day. Know of a place? Could talk music over something strong to drink.

Actually I do. I used to run a bar around here. Locked it up so it wouldn't get looted while all the clean up's going on. Got some pretty good ales if that's your thing.

I'd have to be a fool to turn that down. Lead the way, friend!

[ It isn't too far for them to go, a bit of a walk and lo! A bar! Matt still has the keys, and it's all locked up, nothing too ransacked inside, just a little dusty and quiet. He steps over a bit of fallen wood and heads to go and flicks the lights on, watching them fire on one by one, a couple flickering in the process. ]

Here we go. You want a drink? Should be cold enough that the beer's not bad.

Aye, whatever you would recommend, friend. [Thoster will just make himself at home at the bar, sitting on a stool and having a look around.]

You own the place, then?

Nah I just look after the place. The boss doesn't come here much, looks like he got scared by the fighting and disappeared somewhere. But hey, I've still got the keys.

[ So he'll get a beer from a fridge that is miraculously still turned on, and cracks it open before offering it towards Thoster. ]

[Taking the beer, Thoster takes a deep drink.]

Many thanks, friend. So tell me- if you love music as much as you seem to, what's keeping you from spending your time doing that, rather than serving ale to those in need of it? Not that it's not a noble profession, but if there's a song to be heard, I can think of nothing more honorable.

Yeah well you know things don't always go quite the way you want them to.

[ He looks aside a moment, a touch wistful before shaking his head and shaking it off. ]

My da used to say it was a stupid idea, the whole music thing. Think maybe he was right. Went to university and everything, you know. Got my degree. Look where that got me.

[Thankfully, Thoster got an int check high enough that he's heard something somewhere about higher education somewhere along the way.]

It's not always the most lucrative work, but I'd say it's only a stupid idea if you give it up entirely. Even if you're doing other work, you can find a way to keep the music alive in your heart.

[ Matt shakes his head, but laughs just a bit. ]

You know I used to think that way. Way back when. Thought I could go out and make my fortune.

Ah, it's not about the money. Can't ever do it for that, lad. It's about the love of the song. [He pauses just before taking a drink of his beer] And maybe for the women.

You remind me of me a few years ago when I got on the plane to London. Thought the big city would give me my big break you know. But I was a kid. Didn't know better.

[ Not that he's really some wise old miser now. Makes just as many fuck ups. ]

So then, you want me to tinkle the ivories?

[bluffcheck]

[He nods and lifts is glass to gesture for him to go on.]

Please. I haven't heard good music in quite some time.

[ SO LO, he will go to the piano that it conveniently there, lift up the lid and dust down the keys a bit because really it hasn't been used in too long, and nor either have his fingers. ]

Might be a bit rusty here...

[ but he starts up, and lets just say he's bloody fantastic okay, playing something classical and not really what you'd expect of him. ]

[Thoster has never heard this sort of music. It's not from his time, his place. But it's beautiful. He finds himself drawn in by it, watching Matt play with a wide eyed wonder.]

If that's rusty, can't wait to hear you when you've practiced.

[ He laughs a bit, modest, but lbh he knows he's great. ]

Yeah well, everyone has to be good at something, right?

[Getting up from his seat, Thoster moves to Matt's side and pats him fondly on the shoulder.]

You're better than good, friend. I haven't heard music played like that in a great many years. You should be proud of it.

[ Matt isn't usually big on modesty, and while he knows he's good, he spent so many years growing up being told he never would be, or that he should get a proper job, that it's sort of built in now to question himself. To have someone praise him means a hell of a lot. So he quietens a bit, and drops his head. ]

Thanks man. I mean really. You know. Thanks, that means a lot. I mean I try, you know.

[Thoster encourages Matt to keep playing, asking him to play something more that he can sing along with- making up a song on the spot just for the occasion. There will be plenty of music and beer to last them through the rest of the day, most likely.]
