[He's not expecting it, not now- not ever. For a moment, he looks completely confused, dumbfounded by the words that hang between them. His mouth sits partly open, as he wonders just what he's supposed to say to that.

It's a good thing, right? So why does it make his stomach twist into a knot?

He knows he can't just sit and stare at her, though. So he closes his mouth and swallows hard, nodding as he finds his voice.]

Yeah. Thanks, we're- She's great. [He still doesn't know what they are- Abigail and him. They've gone out. He checked with her not!dad that things were cool. But they haven't had any conversations about what they are or aren't. It's only now that he feels like he really needs to know that for sure.]

I, uh- heard that you and Damon were...

[immuno]

[ For a moment, she looks almost ashamed of herself, but it gets buried behind a dismissive smile. Shaking her head, she lifts her green eyes to fix on his as she reluctantly notes, ] He's gone again.

[ As if that's the reason they weren't still fooling around. Maybe it is. Maybe she'd have kept it up despite her guilt just to get at Stiles. But Damon wouldn't be sitting here with her. ]

Oh. [It's hard not to let a little relief slip into his tone. It's partly because he doesn't like the idea of Lydia hanging around with other guys. But also partly because that particular guy sort of used mind powers to control him for a hot minute??] That... sucks.

[Super appropriate bluff crit fail.]

I guess there's always Max.

[That one still confuses the hell out of him, because the half orc is more terrifying than he is attractive. Unless Lydia just wants a body guard? But still...]

You're joking, right?

[ THE BIGGEST SCOFF. ]

Hey, he came to me and asked where he should take you out to eat. Which was... weird, to say the least.

As if I would go from dating the captain of the lacrosse team to dating an orc. Max is my friend; anything more than that's just ludicrous.

You might want to tell him that. He got pretty weird about it. I think he might have the wrong idea

I'm sorry, you seem to be under the impression that his mistake is my problem. I can't help who's in love with me.

No. [He says with a humorless little laugh.] You really can't. [He takes a deep breath, because even if he's got someone else, part of him is always going to be in love with her. It's a feeling that's shifting, changing, evolving all the time. But she's his first love. You can't undo that.]

I should let you rest.

[ She starts to settle down in bed, but stops, propped on one elbow, pulling the blanket up higher. She fixes him with a studious look. Softens some. Her smile is weary. Whatever she wanted to say, she seems to change her mind, dismissing him entirely instead. ]

You don't have to waste your time coming to visit like this. I'll be out in another day.

[Confusion passes across his expression. That seemed to come from nowhere. Slowly, he stands but doesn't move away from her bed. His hand idly reaches up to scratch at the back of his neck.]

A lot of worse ways I could waste my time. But I'm glad they think you'll be out soon.

I'm just saying that I understand if there are other things you'd rather be doing.

[ More like other people he'd rather be seeing. But the shake of her head is dismissive, a shrug accompanying it, and she then settles the rest of the way down in bed, curls spilling around her head as it hits the pillow. ]

Can't think of any.

[He gives a small shrug of his shoulders, as if that says it all. He doesn't understand the full scope of what makes it more complicated than that, but at the end of the day? Lydia still tops his list for people that count as pretty damn important.]

Just focus on getting better, alright? I'll be around.

[ His answer comes in the form of a slight nod, buried against the blanket that she pulls up to her face. It excuses him, and gives her some peace and quiet to sleep. ]
