The "afterparty" is rumored to be the real main event of the night. A black-tie affair in the lavish, opulent ballroom, it is every new Knight's chance to mingle and meet some of their new brothers in arms. Of course, a couple hours are provided following the ceremony for everyone to change, do hair and makeup, and choose from the vast array of formal attire in the closets of the balcony "dressing rooms" located at the top of spiraled staircases on either side of the ballroom. A separate dressing room exists for men and women, and they include full bathrooms (with, thankfully, very modern plumbing).

The squires are usually among the last to arrive, and the ballroom is full to the brim with a fancy array of people, of all shapes, sizes and species.

Hope none of you are shy. They're all here to meet you.

Right... [She looks away, inwardly amused. She almost missed this--conversing with an elf. They always spoke so fluently and effortlessly.]

What is it that you do here?

I've been with the Order for almost a hundred and fifty years by the human calendar. I serve in the section known as the Dragon's Hide - our first line of defense, you might say.

[mellifluence]

That's...a long time. You must have seen a lot.

[Too much, she hints from her tone. She can only imagine it's tiring to live so long, and the only other elf she's known hated speaking of the future.]

I guess it means you're good at what you do, though.

[luthir]

It would be a rather poor showing if I'd remained here all that time without improving.

[He sounds amused by the idea, though only barely. Probably just because he's an elf, though... wat is displaying sense of humor]

[mellifluence]

[A good fifth of her life was spent following an elf around like a puppy, so she catches on well enough to smile.]

The elf I knew thought he was already really perfect.

[luthir]

Was this an elf you knew quite well?

[mellifluence]

I thought so.

[luthir]

[He catches on quickly. Or something like that.] ... Ah.

Well, you may find we elves are not all as similar as many humans would think.

[mellifluence]

[She'd say that it was a long time ago but that would sound ridiculous to someone who's lived at least a hundred and fifty years, so she just shakes her head.]

I know. And now I can see for myself.

[She realizes belatedly it might sound like she's hitting on him so she tries to cover it up quickly.] So the Dragon's Hide... You must do a fair amount of fighting?

[luthir]

Nearly every mission: I'm rarely dispatched when things are unlikely to necessitate a need for combat, although exceptions remain.

[mellifluence]

Do missions usually require combat?

[luthir]

There's often an element of it - or at least the risk of danger - but if it isn't your strong suit, you needn't worry overly much. You'll never be assigned to missions without others, and there'll almost always be a member or two of the Hide along with you. It's our job to make certain the others remain safe.

[mellifluence]

[Well, that's a relief.] Do you teach people how to fight, too?

[luthir]

It's part of my duties here, yes.

[mellifluence]

Then I guess I'll be in your hands for a while. [Aren't you excited, Luthir? 8|]

[ Thrilled 8| ] Did you have an interest in a particular field?

[mellifluence]

[Good, she thought so. 8) But really, she already has a history of following elves around. Luthir is doomed.]

I'm not picky. You're the weapons expert; whatever you think is best.

[luthir]

Well, we will probably avoid a longsword, for the time being.

[mellifluence]

Avoiding a chance to lose fingers and toes? Sounds good.

[luthir]

Perhaps something a bit less sharp.

[mellifluence]

Lightweight's also a plus, if we're making a list.

[luthir]

How's your aim?

[mellifluence]

Surprisingly good. Or decent, I guess. Just decent.

[She needs to remember she's talking to a weapons expert here.]

Hmm. [He looks her over thoughtfully] We'll see what 'decent' amounts to, soon.

[Yeah, that look wasn't unnerving at all...]
