The morning after, the Knights board a plane at their private airfield, and begin the couple hour flight to the country of Slovechnia. Wynn has laid out a plan for them as such, leaving Sir Gar in charge of seeing it executed: they are to send in a few Knights to infiltrate the wedding, while others steal an ambulance from a local hospital. Using magic to make Sarandis think he's having a heart attack during the ceremony, they will intercept the outgoing call to the paramedics, and pose as them to take him out of there and straight to a private airfield to meet with Wynn. They're all aware, however, of just how smoothly their plans tend to go where these villains are involved - especially if the Mind Master shows up.

Either way, it promises to be an interesting day...

[Her head tips to the side for a moment, before shrugging.]

I take it you guys are more of a winging it kind of team?

More like the bad guys rarely respect our plans.

How dare they. But that tends to be why I like my contingency plans. Even if I don't need them, I like having them, just to be on the safe side. You never know what can go wrong.

And I have had missions go wrong.

Well, the good news is that we probably maxed out "going wrong" either in New York or with our castle getting invaded. So it's all uphill from here. [ a long pause leads her to knock on ... whatever fake veneer would is available. she then makes a face that seems to acknowledge that it is not, in fact, real wood. ]

[She smirks a bit despite the lack of wood and nods.]

Hey, a little optimism. Can't go wrong with that.

It's impossible to overestimate the amount of optimism involved in "maybe a stage of the mission for the Lazarus Talisman won't go wrong."

[She laughs a bit at that, before nodding.]

Hey. You never know when the tables might turn. Everybody's gotta win sometime.

I don't think that's true.

[Her eyebrows go up.]

So you think some people are just doomed to lose forever?

I believe that whatever hand Fate deals us isn't necessarily beholden to checks and balances. The cosmic scale isn't that individualized.

[She considers for a moment, before shrugging.]

See, I'm not talking about Fate. I'm talking about luck, and luck doesn't mean things get decided for us. It's more about ... seizing opportunities.

You're acting like luck and Fate are different. [ which doesn't so much make sense to Buffy. ] Aren't they just two different words to explain the same thing?

Fate, to me, kind of seems like there are big powerful beings out there making decisions for you, and you've got no say in what happens to you.

[She shrugs.]

Luck is ... it's not completely out of your hands. If I'm lucky, I'll only have to make easy decisions, but they're still my decisions to make. No one has a say in my actions on this mission but me. Plus I feel like blaming losses on fate is an easy way to not take responsibility for my choices.

Guess that's the difference. You think Fate takes all your decisions away: I think it just sets you up to have to make the hard ones, the ones where there's no right answer.

[She considers that for a moment, before shaking her head.]

Yeah, but everyone has to make hard choices. Maybe not on as grand a scale as we're doing here, but that doesn't make their decisions any less hard or their sacrifices any less valuable. I knew this mom back in New York who was barely making enough money to pay her rent, so every night was the decision of "Do I eat or do my kids eat?" and she worked hard to get herself out of that situation and into a better one.

[She's not being confrontational, or at least not trying to be, but "Fate" has always seemed like a scapegoat to her. A place to blame when things go wrong, and a place to make yourself seem more important when things go well. She thinks back on the little psionic girl she killed trying to free Andrew in Germany and the decision to go into the painting that got Nyna killed but saved the victim in Switzerland and she isn't going to curse Fate for those choices. Those are decisions she made because she needed to at the time, and she has to live with the struggle and the consequences.]

I'm not really one to believe in paths or destiny or any of that. What we're doing doesn't make us better because we're saving the world or because "Fate chose us" to be here. I worked hard to get where I am, and have made a lot of hard choices along the way. I chose to be a knight because this is the kind of work I wanted to do and the people I wanted to stop. If I wanted to leave it up to Fate, I'd probably still be Robin Hooding in New York.

You don't have to leave anything to Fate for it to catch you. Sometimes, it looks like spiraling your decisions into something bigger than you ever expected. It's not all oracles with tarot cards telling you your fortune.

[She considers for a moment shrugs.]

I guess I prefer to look at it differently.
