A gentleman of the highest order. [She slides into the seat, adjusting her skirt and the flowers on her lap, and once he's climbed in the driver's seat, she asks, chipperly:] So where are we going?

Well, I got us tickets the performance tonight at Ronnie Scott's, and I figured we could have dinner there, and see what happens after that?

[And he starts to drive as he speaks, pulling out of the driveway and heading towards London.]

[She got an 18 on that knowledge local check, so I guess she really likes jazz.] The jazz club? Oh my gods, I've been eyeing that place ever since I moved here.

I'd hoped so. I have too.

[But he never had a person to go with, so he's glad she's on the same page.]

I figured this was the perfect opportunity.

A chance to experience it together... for the first time. [she turns red.] Two first times. ...Not like that, I mean. Just us. Together on a date. For the first time. And going to the jazz club for the first time.

[she covers her mouth.] Sorry. Nerves.

[He shakes his head before giving her a smile.]

Don't worry about it. But yeah - I like it that today's going to be a couple good firsts.

I'm just surprised you didn't have someone else in mind- that's not self-deprecating. It's just that you're so.... [she struggles to find a word.] Sweet? [awkward smile.] And you've been here so much longer, and all...

[she would have believed that SURELY he had girls lined up around the block. because apparently cute nerds are desirable?? look andrew landed a succubus. it's not unheard of.]

[He smiles a bit at that, before giving a small shrug.]

Maybe I was just waiting for the right person to share it with. I'll have you know that I have very particular, very excellent taste in jazz club companions.

[BLUSHING HARDER as she tries to bury her face in her flowers.] Oh, stop. You're gonna make my face stick like this, Lance. [she lifts her head a bit to give him a sweet smile.] But I really do appreciate it. Ever since I met you playing the piano that day, I was just... I dunno. Maybe I'm just a sucker for a guy who can play an instrument.

[That makes him smile wider, before he keeps driving.]

Maybe I was an accompanist looking for the right songstress.

Is that even a real word? [she laughs and leans back against the seat, hugging her flowers.] I guess I've always believed in destiny. Hard not to when you're a cleric, but I did have that rebellious streak when I was younger where I guess I decided that my family's so-called destiny wasn't gonna cut it for me. But maybe being the one to branch out and go farther was what I was meant to do.

[He nods in agreement.]

I've always been one to forge my own path, but I don't think that discounts your ability to put yourself where you're meant to be.

Well, yeah... I don't think destiny negates free will. It just means we have the right to choose whether we follow our destiny or not. Course correction and all that stuff about how people will always end up where they're supposed to be just seems silly. That's a lot of variables to account for just to make sure Linda Sue marries Jimmy instead of Tommy, you know.

That is very true. It's hard to believe that there's a force in the universe that can easily keep track of all those details.

Weeeell, there are a lot of gods, Lance. [she smiles serenely.] They've gotta all be doing something out there on their planes looking down on us.

[There's a beat before he nods his agreement.]

You're right. I'm still getting used to the polytheistic worldview sometimes.

So on your side of the Veil, there's... just the one, right?

[that seems so surreal to her, but she was raised with an understanding of all the different gods of Faerun and otherwise.]

Sort of. I mean there were prominent pantheons in previous world history, but Christianity sort of ... conquered everything, after a while. But as it is, it evolved from Judaism and then splintered into different kinds of Christianity and Islam sort of evolved from the Middle Eastern religions as well.

[There's a beat.]

So basically, it's all the same god, they just have different ways of worshiping them.

[she shakes her head, laughing a little.] Don't get me wrong- I think Christianity tries its hardest, but it's hard to stomp out a faith that gives us such wonderful gifts. Arguing about whose god is the real one or who worships the best way is just a good way to not get a cleric when you need one.

If I learned tomorrow that Milil was just an aspect of Ao and not his own separate god, then it wouldn't change anything about my faith in him.

[He nods in agreement.]

You would think that people would have learned to compromise, but it doesn't stop people from being afraid of what they don't understand. Some extreme conservatives believe that learning about alternative faiths compromises their own. Why bother, when they're false to begin with.

Exactly! Goodness, nothing has power if no one believes in it enough. You might as well say eating fish compromises your love for chicken.

At least it means they have a great deal of passion for it. Maybe that's worth something?

So long as it's productive passion, yeah.

Agreed. And productive in a positive direction.

[Because there's being productive in a very negative direction that's not so good for anyone, really.]
