To be honest, I was surprised he stuck it out here for so long. He's -- back home he's very much the 'this is my plan, we're doing it my way' sort.

The Klaus that's here... he's definitely not quite the same as the one I knew.

The Veil's known to do that. Among worse tricks.

That is definitely something I try to keep in mind when I think about everything I have here.

[She smiles and glances to Olivia.] I shouldn't keep you though. I'm sure you were on your way to something.

[oftheband]

Nothing that couldn't wait while I have a chat with a lovely lass.

[consequence]

Well, this lass appreciates the compliment. Usually my daughter opts to ruin whatever I'm wearing for the day. I think giving her a basket of colored paper seems to have distracted her from the usual destruction.

[oftheband]

She doesn't look like she could do all that much damage. But sometimes those are the ones you need to look out for.

[consequence]

Speaking from experience, are you? [Hayley laughs, smirking, softly. ] Because if not, I'm happy to let you babysit for an afternoon. Give you that experience.

[oftheband]

Couldn't be all that hard.

[consequence]

[Hayley laughs, shaking her head.]

She's part witch, part wolf, and part vampire — I'm pretty sure that's the definition of hard. She's good, though. Sleeps through the night, doesn't fuss. But she has her father's curiosity and apparently his lack of fear, too.

[oftheband]

Does she bite?

[consequence]

[She laughs, shaking her head.]

She has teeth, but she doesn't bite. She has a werewolf side, but the way it works where we're from - that side of her isn't present. It's ... complicated isn't even putting it lightly.

[oftheband]

Isn't present. What, like pulling brown eyes instead of blue?

[consequence]

The werewolf side - it's a latent... I don't want to say thing, but it's present from birth. It doesn't trigger until that person takes a life. We consider it a curse - painful transformations, ruled by the lunar cycle. The vampire side - it makes her a hybrid, which removes the pain and gives her control over her shifting.

[oftheband]

Takes a life. I assume it has to be on purpose?

[consequence]

Unfortunately, it doesn't matter. Accident or on purpose - it still counts as taking a life.

[oftheband]

Might be a difficult thing to avoid, growing up around us.

[consequence]

[Hayley nods, glancing to her daughter.]True... but I think she's better here.

Not that I thought that when I first got here - that raising a daughter in a strange world, where she won't know anything of her true history would be [She pauses, trying to find the right word.] dishonest of me. Not that it's my fault, but that she wouldn't have the same life. Her name is already different than what it was meant to be back home - but back home I think things are worse for her. She's a target, we both were and even if she doesn't get to see where she came from, I think she'll see who she became a lot clearer when she's old enough.

[oftheband]

Ay, I can understand all that, certainly. [ he hesitates a bit, before asking ] A target of who, if I may ask?

[consequence]

When I arrived here, I was still pregnant. The witches of New Orleans had been looking to kill me, to take my baby for sacrifice.

[She takes a breath.] With Klaus being a hybrid, me being a werewolf and the heritage of his family having ties to the ancestors - she's sort of a triple threat.

[oftheband]

Makes sense, I suppose. Not that I have much truck with witches, but I suppose we've a few around here might qualify. They do tend to be... extreme.

[consequence]

[Hayley nods, rubbing her elbow and making sure to keep watch on her daughter.]

Back home, family is the most important thing. I'm supposed to trust them to keep me safe, to keep her safe and most of the time I didn't really feel like that was happening.

Here, though -- here I feel like she's safe. That there aren't groups forming to try and use us or come at us for their stake in power. [She laughs lightly.] Well, not me directly, at least.

[oftheband]

The Knights as a whole, maybe another story. [ he chuckles ] Well. You ladies have a good time with your... Valentines, then.

[consequence]

[Hayley smiles and nods, moving to reach for her daughter's hand.]

[And Olivia waves bye to the man as they head off to deliver more.]
