Not always. Sometimes the other nature people visit, sometimes the clerics if they need something, but mostly me. It's kind of my thing.

How'd you learn to do all of it? Tend to them the way they need and keep them indoors?

Honestly, I'm not sure? I don't remember anything about my childhood so if someone taught me I don't remember it. I've always just known what to do, like an instinct.

[ though rey looks confused for a moment, she figures it out. ]

You lost that when you came through the Veil?

[ not for the first time, she feels lucky to have not lost anything. ]

Yup. Everything before I joined the Legion is just a whole lotta nothing. But, like, upside? Forgot my first period. That's cool.

It's much less of a nuisance on a planet like this one. [ You don't know suffering until you're just casual bleeding through your clothes because you can't stop working. And also your periods are inconsistent because undernourishment. #ScavengerLife. ] But I suppose that, at least, is a memory most could happily do without.

That's probably true. At least periods taught the boys in the Legion the miracle of tampons to plug wounds in the field.

What's a tampon?

[ vi just gapes for a second. ]

...it's-- it's basically a hunk of cotton you jam up there to catch the blood and then you flush it and replace with a fresh one. That sounded awful, but they're really great.

[forcevisions]

You just plug it up? Is it really alright to do that?

[graveflowers]

Yeah, not forever, you have to change it out or you can get sick, but it's a pretty legit plan. Actually, hold on. [ she pauses in their walk to rifle through the duffle bag, unearthing a semi-crushed tampon that she rips free of the plastic packaging so rey can see the purple plastic applicator. ] Voila, a tampon.

[ She makes a ? ? ? ? face at the applicator, snatches it from her, and then ... plunges it so the cotton pops out the top. Surprise widens her eyes, opens her mouth, and gets a near-flinch from the rest of her body before she scrambles and catches it before it hits the floor. Then she prods at the cotton. ]

So it's just cloth made to soak it up? How much do women of this world bleed? [ She has absolutely never had a period heavy enough to require a sponge ok. ]

Depends on the vag. Me? Barely at all before Lu because I'm so grossly skinny and now not at all after Lu. Some people it's just all blood, all the time for a whole week.

A whole week. How often?

[ This is ?? ? ? what ? ? ? ? ]

Once a month. It's a torturous life to be a woman with a healthy weight. But now they use birth control to help lessen it, which is cool. Go science.

How is it healthier to bleed one week out of four? If you ask me, that's the unhealthy weight. [ Which ok isn't to say she'll stop eating or anything but man. ]

I dunno, 'cause like you gotta clean that snatch out. I think people who aren't underweight actually have uteruses, uteri? Whatever, they've got junk that is hospitable to life so they actually have stuff to shed.

But, like, I'm not a doctor. I dunno. Honestly, Astrid would know more, she's an actual doctor.

Astrid. All right, I suppose I'll ask her.

[ It's a quest. A period quest. But more to the point ... they have arrived at the greenhouse, surprise.

Rey stops once they're through the doors, awe washing away any tension in her face and widening her eyes. Her jaw slackens, and she stands there, frozen in the doorway, taking in the extent of the greenery. England by itself is a miracle compared to most of what she's seen, on par with the lush Takodana, but the diversity of life in the greenhouse is another animal entirely. ]

[ most people see the greenhouse and they're like cool, good job, vi. and then there is rey. vi just can't help herself when she lets the natural magic flood out of her and into the plants, brightening the greenery and causing the flowers to burst into bloom. lucia laughs, clapping her chubby hands, and vi puts a hand on rey's back, leaning over to whisper, ] Welcome to my personal heaven.

This is incredible!

[ It takes her a moment to catch her breath and come to terms with how amazing it really is, and at that point, she begins to pace around almost feverishly, trying to take everything in at once. ]

How long have you had it here?

[graveflowers]

A couple years now, a little bit longer. I asked Wynn a few months after I joined if we could build one. [ rey's enthusiasm is infectious, making vi feel all warm and fuzzy as she gestures around the rows. it's not incredibly big, but big enough to make vi happy. ] There's medicinal herbs and plants for potion ingredients and spell components over here, the ones in the back behind the mesh are poisonous, that's why they're blocked off. There's some cooking herbs for Rafael over here and a few veggies, easy stuff to grow so Lucia can learn. The rest is just... flowers I like.

[forcevisions]

[ Rey looks at each section in turn, sniffing the cooking herbs and some of the blooming flowers. She turned to look at Vi once she was through explaining to ask, ] Who's Rafael?

[graveflowers]

He's... family. [ which vi's fond smile says even more than her words. ] Unless he hurts Buffy in which case he is dead to me, but. Still family then.

[forcevisions]

Why would he hurt her? [ And who is Buffy? ? ? ? How are all of these people in your family. Why would you have your family be dead to you. Is she talking about murdering her family because Rey has had enough of that lately. ]

[graveflowers]

They're dating, but they're both the heroic type, you know, very self-sacrificing for the cause. [ a beat. ] And kind of idiots sometimes but we have stressful lives, I can't blame them for struggling with how to juggle love and our frankly ridiculously dangerous jobs.

[ lucia scoots herself over to a low shelf and tips over a small box of soil on to her lap. ] Life is kind of messy.
