[ Lear has pushed up the arm-rests between a row of three chairs, and with application of complimentary pillows and wadded up blankets, has managed to make herself a narrow bed to sprawl wholly unsafely upon. It's close enough to Eric, though, that she can twist her head around to look at him, hair in her face. ]

French hat, consumed to castigate. Six letters.

[His eyes flick up and over towards Lear, as if surprised he's being addressed. It takes him a second to process what she's saying.]

... Are you doing a crossword?

Is that against the rules? Should I be practicing how to say I'd like to buy a kidney in Japanese?

[ She's just teasing. But she doesn't actually seem to have a pen or paper in her hand. ]

It's a cryptic crossword clue. "French hat, consumed to castigate."

Consumed? I don't really get how eating a hat is punishment.

Have you never done a cryptic crossword before?
sirstickuphisass: (pic#1758608)

[personal profile] sirstickuphisass 2012-03-23 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Is that different from a regular one?
lear: (Default)

[personal profile] lear 2012-03-23 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Quite different, yes. It's more like a word puzzle. Look, I'll walk you through this one. What's a word for a French hat?
lear: (Default)

[personal profile] lear 2012-03-23 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
And what's another word meaning "consumed"?
lear: (Default)

[personal profile] lear 2012-03-23 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
And "to castigate"?
sirstickuphisass: (pic#1758601)

[personal profile] sirstickuphisass 2012-03-24 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
To punish. What, am I supposed to string them all together now? It doesn't make anything.

You've got the wrong synonym, that's all.

[ She wiggles over like a bug until she's on her stomach, propping her chin up on her hands. ]

Beret? Ate?

Bingo! Not bad, for your first time.

[personal profile] sirstickuphisass 2012-03-25 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
You could have explained the rules. That the first two were clues to the last one.
lear: (Default)

[personal profile] lear 2012-03-26 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
Right, well. There'll almost always be a word that's a synonym for the answer, that's the definition, and the rest of the clue is usually wordplay to get you there.

[A tiny beat] Gimme another one.

Clever railed vehicles reversed.

Railed vehicles...

Trains.

[ Waves a finger. ]

Nope!
lear: (Default)

[personal profile] lear 2012-03-31 08:09 am (UTC)(link)
A little more conventional... the key word here is "reversed". It's an instruction, you see. So a word meaning "clever", when reversed, will be a word meaning "rail vehicles".

You weren't kidding about the "cryptic" part of this, you know.

[He narrows his eyes as if he's giving up on this stupid game, but they light up a few seconds later. And he groans.]

Trams.

Yes!

[ She claps her hands and kicks her legs. ]

You're pretty good at these actually!
