Sidelined from the mission that has been many of their lives for years, the group who had once stood against Keijen Blade has made a dangerous gambit - they've decided to leave the Knighthood, knowing they may never be allowed to return. With them, have gone Sam and Dean Winchester, and Faith Lehane. Their destination? A distant monastery overlooking the village of Krozna, in the Ural Mountains. This hidden location was home to many Shadowkind who did not wish to deal with the prejudice that their appearance might force upon them out in the world, particularly in Russia. Wynn had apparently established a location here for Knights that broke the rules of the Knighthood so extremely to reflect upon their crimes, or for those whose powers made it impossible for them to live out in civilized society.

This monastery of misfits is run by a man named Mikhail Kalachnik, a willing exile who volunteered for the position, a man vouched for as trustworthy by both Jack Chessing and Finnick Odair. It is here that the former Knights will set up a base of operations from which they intend to rescue Rafael Giovanni, research a way to stop Keijen Blade, and take him down once and for all, along with the evil Mind Master.

But first, they must get to know the exiled Knights with whom they will be sharing this hideout...

... Arcane physics.

I know a bit about that myself. I'm more focused on the lore aspect of the arcane, though.

[THE LORE.]

The least important aspect, often grounded in superstition. I'm talking about a wedding of science and the arcane.

Not if you're out there dealing with it on the daily. Stories usually come from somewhere, in my experience.

Never been one for experiments much myself. I need to be in the field as much as the library.

The laboratory is where my work is done. As you'll notice, we're tragically lacking in one here.

[Sam guesses the guy is probably super unhappy and bored here if his 'only joy' is spending time in a room that's absent here completely.]

What were you working on before you ended up here?

[ there's a long-suffering look in his eye for a minute, as if he's sure that the act of trying to explain this to someone is going to be more trouble than it's worth but he finally says crisply: ] Dimensional disruption.

[Recognition dawns in his eyes (knowledge...nat 20).]

You mean destabilizing the Veil. [He leans back in his seat.] You probably know Jeanne Gar, right? She came along with us out here? She's been studying the same thing.

[He's gr8 at these knowledge checks. Not so much on the social awareness.]

Really interesting stuff.

[ there's a beat, before he finally lifts his head to look - really look at sam for the first time in the conversation. there's an intensity to the gaze that he levels at the other, one that's not ... a little disconcerting. his voice is quiet but insistent as he says: ] What did you say.

[His mouth opens and closes a couple times, not so unlike a fish, before he asks:]

[ before he can answer however, they are both interrupted by gar's voice in the hall outside. moments later, she enters, talking to jack behind her, oblivious to the conversation already happening in the room ] -- with just a few small adjustments, I think I could actually turn it into a ... a portable sensor of sorts for Shadowkind, which might prove invaluable if we --

[ his head swings around instantly at that, still looking strangely dazed by everything that is happening. the book drops out of his hand to the floor, landing with pages bent and skewed against the worn rug, but he doesn't seem to notice a damn thing. ] Jeanne?

[ as gar stops in place to look and see who is saying her name, her eyes widen abruptly, her body freezing in place as if she's looking at a ghost. it takes a few moments before she can even get a word out. ] ... Ph... Phillip?

[ meanwhile, jack just back here looking between them like

?? ? ]

[Sam just looks between them as well before his eyes settle on Jack, who at least looks as confused as he does, and just...shrugs his shoulders.

[ gar looks simultaneously like she wants to rush to him and like she's rooted to the spot ] What are you... what are you doing here? [ and then, her head turns to look to jack for answers ] What is he doing here?

[ time to handle this diplomatically ???? ] ... Sir Gorski is one of us. A Knight of the Hoard, since before you came to us.

He's been here since shortly before then, as well.

He's a Knight? [ and she swivels back to look at him again ] Phillip is a Knight? Why-- how...

Will someone please explain what is happening right now?

Who do you think recommended Wynn recruit you? [ he offers quietly, rising to his feet and stepping past the forgotten book to draw nearer to her. his eyes take in every detail of her, amazed ] I intended for us to work together with Wynn's resources at our disposal. To continue our work together.

That... didn't quite happen as intended.

[Oh wow that means he's been here...a long time. Without his precious lab.

Yikes.

Sam will just...pick up the discarded book as Phillip steps over it, fixing the pages and closing it before putting it back on the shelf.

When he assumed they knew each other, he figured it would have been because they were both knights but this is...

So...what did happen?

[So much for keeping his mouth shut in said nope situation. It's not like someone isn't going to ask, though.]

[ GOOD QUESTION ] Yes, how did you... how did you end up here? [ she lets that linger a second before looking back at jack for an answer b/c DRAGONS CLAWS KNOW ALL THINGS but he looks rather uncomfortable at the prospect of telling that story in this moment, in front of everyone, including phillip himself and hesitates ]

It's inane, really, the reasoning behind my being sent here. All I did was remedy a situation, in the most efficient way at my disposal. Why I should be punished for doing what no other Knight could is beyond me.

[Sam isn't sure he believes that. Wynn has always seemed like a pretty reasonable dude and there have been plenty of not-so-kosher people still living under that roof despite one thing or another.

Himself included in that number. Ahem.]

That doesn't really answer her question, man.
