[Earlier in the week all DRAKENET devices received a message announcing Francesca's birthday party, courtesy of Sir Bancroft, to be held the evening of July 11. No RSVP needed. It's especially good timing now that many mission groups have returned to the castle, at least for the time being.

As the guests make their way in, it's clear the party's been well stocked with food and drink. There's plenty of room for mingling and some music in the background. Gifts are completely optional, but welcome. Come in and get comfortable.]

I suppose you might call me a people person. I'm good at getting people to do what I want them to do. Or tell me what I need to know. Comes in much handier than gunning everything down all the time.

I guess there are a lot of people who are easily influenced. [It's a shame she can't remember how great she was at that sort of thing in her own world.]

It's not the magic so much as that I'm not afraid to use it.

I do like the sound of that. Some of my life experience and advice in return for your agreeing to do one little favor for me down the road, whenever I should name it.

I assume, darling, this would remain between you and I...

[ dumage slips a hand forward to shake on it ] Naturally.

[There's only a brief hesitation before she takes the hand and shakes it firmly.]

I think this will prove profitable for us both. [ her smug expression seems to only get more so as she glances around, as if gauging to make sure no one's listening in. ]

I get the feeling what you're really interested in is power and how to attain it. Something on which I'm more than qualified to teach. You might not think it to look at me, but I hold a great deal of sway here. More than you might ever imagine.

You need to learn when to rein yourself in, first of all. While your instincts might be to make certain everyone here knows how much better you are than they are, if you let those above you feel comfortably superior, they won't be afraid of you, or start plotting against you. [ he gaze falls on some of the section heads chatting across the room and her lip curls up into a judgmental smirk as she turns back to face Faye. ] Plus, it lets you keep something up your sleeve.

[She opens her mouth to make another smart ass remark, but actually pays attention to what Dumage is saying and closes it begrudgingly. She follows the woman's gaze around the room, wondering what stories she could tell about all these people. She seemed the type to have a hand in everything.]

Then what?

If you don't have any enemies, you should work on making some. Friends take you for granted, get spoiled by your being kind to them and start becoming demanding, tyrannical even since they expect you to do things for them. Not to mention, they'll get jealous of you faster than your enemies will.

Make someone your enemy, however, and then give them a reason to want to work for you -- something you can offer them that no one else can -- and they'll have much more to prove than any of your so called friends ever would. You can't earn loyalty like that by playing nice.

[That bit of advice pulls a sly grin from her. It's a tug of a memory, or simply something that makes sense to her, but she'd forgotten.]
