Shaving is a dangerous business. Luckily, reflexes like a cat. [ he tosses the trimmer up in the air where it does an artful couple of spins, and then catches it with ease. ] Myrilandel. Or do you prefer Myri? The first is a bit of a mouthful.

[She smiles at his little trick.]

Either is fine. Most of the group have taken to calling me Myri. I don't mind.

[The name feels familiar, even if she could never really place it.]

The best nicknames are the ones that come from those who love us.

[witchwoman]

[She just nods with a soft smile.]

I'm glad to have you with us. Perhaps this mission will go more smoothly than the last.

[bancroft]

From what I've hear, it didn't go so badly last time. You all established quite a few inroads into this Nova situation, didn't you?

[witchwoman]

Perhaps, but there was a fair amount of missteps.

[bancroft]

I like to think that most of my career has been a series of salvaging missteps more than consistently taking the right ones.

[witchwoman]

[She ducks her head, hiding a smile.]

You like to think that? Why?

[bancroft]

[ he grins and strides past her, sitting on the edge of his bed and drawing his boots over, to pick them up, and grab a brush off the stand beside him. ]

I've had quite a long and colorful history with the Knights. And I was never, ever, ever in my early years what anyone would have ventured to call 'Dragon's Claw material'. The thought was practically laughable: I caused more trouble than I halted, took manic risks, was impatient and ill-experienced, and thought I knew everything.

[ he gives a fond, faraway grin ] So why do you think Wynn picked me?

[witchwoman]

[Truthfully, Myri isn't sure. She thinks for a moment, then finally resigns.]

He must have had a reason...

[bancroft]

More than one, I should hope. [ he tosses her a smirk, and starts scrubbing at the boot ] Wynn told me eventually that what he admired about me the most was that I never feared failure. It wasn't that I was above thoughts of letting someone down, but more along the lines of never accepting defeat as the end of the line. Mistakes were always a stepping stone to success, and there was always a way to redeem what seemed irredeemable. I still believe that, and it's why I don't sweat the small stuff, as they say.

[witchwoman]

Where I came from, failure didn't simply mean disappointing a man such as Wynn... [She looks away] It meant running for your life.

[bancroft]

Must have been a relief to get out of a world like that.

[witchwoman]

[She nods, but there's a small tug in her mind that won't fully remember... Something that she does miss but she cannot imagine what or who.] The others wish they could remember more. Sometimes, I wish I could forget.

[bancroft]

Strange, isn't it, how that works out? Sometimes the curse comes in remembering.

[witchwoman]

Perhaps I've forgotten just as much. [She shrugs] There's no way to be certain.

[bancroft]

And as such, nothing to be gained from dwelling on it. Whether one remembers their past or not.

[witchwoman]

Exactly. We must all move forward. New lives can be forged. I've lived my life, trying to do good and right for the world. There's no reason why I cannot do that here as well.

[bancroft]

I think I can rather say I like you, Ms. de Tanos. Sir de Tanos, pardon.

[witchwoman]

[She blushes and duck to his a bashful smile.]

Myri is fine. I don't much feel like a knight yet.

[bancroft]

What will it take? Slaying a dragon?

[witchwoman]

[She knows he's joking, which is why she only looks slightly horrified.]

I would never! I only wish I could see one up close.

[bancroft]

[ he gives an enigmatic grin ] Stick with the Knights: you might be surprised how opportunities present themselves.
