[ Yesterday, members of team failboat went to the bayou hideout of the mysterious woman known only as "the Mind Master", on some intel from the captured Olean Gilbert. What they discovered was a very bizarre woman, who played mind games with them, and seemed to evince little concern for their interference. Another man, whom may have been Chad Becksworth entered, and told her that "Decker" was finished stalling and all was in readiness... The two of them fled before the Knights could get much information from either of them, and set a hideous creature to attack them: which appeared to be the result of a Frankenstein-like scientific process that sewed a human woman together with a giant snake.

The next day, another team of Knights infiltrated NOVA HQ to hack into appointment records and discover the names of those intended to meet with Chad Becksworth. Just as they downloaded the list, the scheduled meeting attendees arrived: it seemed they were meeting today, and the Dragon's Claws insisted that the younger Knights retire to the hotel, where all will be able to monitor the meeting onscreen as they spy on it and broadcast video. Knights' allies (Des, Rafael, Elena) are invited to watch as well. ]

[ i'll be real with you, there's some rafael reaction shit that will go down in the thread above that could potentially influence conversations that take place in this thread so YOU MAY WANT TO WAIT TIL WE GET TO THAT SHIT ABOVE TO TAG THIS, it shouldn't take too long.

anyways, sometime in the next week or so, rafael has discovered that there is a ~PIANO~ in the hotel bar because it's a classy hotel bar. so he's down there on his off hours from NOVA, playing an incredibly melancholy tune (28 piano) and singing (it's like over 40 don't even go there) and breaking everyone's heart in the building.

[ dumage is sitting across the bar on a stool, with a frilly drink in front of her, half-listening. there's no one sitting beside her, although the young bartender keeps giving her nervous smiles. something about the way she winks at him seems to scare him into near peeing himself though, so she's not engaged in conversation.

instead, anyone approaching might notice her glance over her shoulder at rafael's soulful interlude, and let out a condescending cluck of her tongue. ]

[Spike notices the click, and it makes him grin. He seats himself next to her and looks at Rafael, a little scornfully, then back at Dumage.]

Not a fan?

[ a little smirk works up her cheek when she sees him, though she coolly only throws him a little glance ]

I suppose the music's fine. It's the sentiment that's nauseating.

Not much of a romantic, are you? [He orders some really manly drink from the bartender that probably tastes like paint thinner.]

I can see the appeal. But in my experience, nothing ever lives up to the fantasy. Reality's always crueler than that. [ she nods towards rafael ] Take that poor git for instance. Wastes all of his time pining after a woman who doesn't want to give him the time of day anymore. She has her own life, her own priorities now. And he expects her to throw all of them away because it hurts his poor feelings that he lost her?

[ she takes a long drink ] If you ask me, he needs to grow up and accept you don't get everything you want, like the rest of us.

[Privately, selfishly, Spike doesn't mind the pining. If Rafael stopped pining, he'd probably notice the fantastic woman who was far too clearly into him. Even worse, he might move on. That was the last thing Spike needed. Like he could possibly compete with a bloody rock star that also could hold his own in a fight when he wasn't shooting his teammates and could do nearly everything but fly a helicopter.]

Too bad logic's never had a thing to do with feelings.

Part of maturing is recognizing that the world doesn't revolve around your feelings. Anything less starts to make a person downright pathetic.

And so here he is, hurting both of them by refusing to be a man and let her have a new life.

A tragedy. That's what that is. But not in the way he thinks.

[He watches her thoughtfully, tilting his head. Spike didn't remember his past life. He might have been in love before, he might not have. He thinks he must have, though. Why else would what Dumage is saying ring so wrong to him? Is he just that hopeless a romantic?]

Have you ever been in love?

[As soon as Raf's finished, Des appears just to lean on his piano.]

So Jade's a goddess. [He whistles.] Didn't see that one coming.

[romanticidal]

[ it's pretty readily apparent from the look he throws des that he's the last person he wants to talk about jade with, but he only hesitates a moment before saying: ] From the moment I met Eterna, I knew she was unlike any other woman I had known. I am sure all men in love tell themselves this, but with her... it was more so.

When she finally told me the truth, I was not surprised.

I wasn't either. I was actually kinda sick to my stomach about it. [Des gives no fucks about your comfort level, Raf.] But I've got issues with higher powers, so it sorta figures I meet a nice girl and she's a deity.

[ he is going to very pointedly ignore des talking about 'meeting a nice girl' and the implications of that phrasing, and just move onto the next part of the sentence. k? k. ]

She has a touch of the divine, si, but that does not make her one of them, either. She is still mortal, though she will live a long, long time by mortal years. Her choices are still her own.

[He's quiet for moment- oddly quiet for a guy who never gets philosophical.] She told me a lot about dreams at Nightscape. Kinda stuck with me. You ever stopped to think, maybe the real reason she doesn't remember you is because you're her dream and she just finally had to wake up?

[Aww look. Maybe deep down, he doesn't ship himself/Jade.]

He stares at Des for a long moment, and a heaviness seems to infect his posture ] ... If that is so, then what becomes of the dream once the dreamer has gone?

[Des makes a poof gesture with accompanying sound effects.] Who knows. All I know is she's a sad girl. Maybe it's you. Maybe it's something else.

... Buffy seems to think I am making a decision for Eterna, by looking for a way to restore her memories.

[slay]

That's pretty.

[ she's hovering behind him, shifting awkwardly on her heels because she doesn't know what else to say. she's hurt. she shouldn't even be here, but she is. maybe because she wants to demand a better explanation but can't bring herself to. maybe because she's just tired of being at odds with everyone and his voice is soothing. ]

[ his fingers pause above the keys at her voice, for a moment, before he resumes playing, though he stops singing now ]

I get it, you know. Why you didn't tell us. [ it still hurts, and she's not over it or forgiving him that quickly by any means, but ... ] What I don't get is why you didn't tell her.

[romanticidal]

[ his fingers idle again, though for a briefer moment now ] It did not seem fair, somehow. She guarded her secret so closely... it was as if telling her would come off as some desperate way to make her rely on me to learn more about herself.

That is not how I want her to come to know me. Or why.

[slay]

Makes sense. [ she moves to stand beside him at the bench, gesturing to the spare space on it. ] Can I? [ she can't play, but she can sit with him at least. ]

Si, of course. [ he scooches over just a bit to allow her more space, looking over at her briefly ] Do you play?

[slay]

Not that I can remember. [ she moves to sit beside him, folding her hands in her lap and hunching her shoulders. ] Just like listening.
