The "afterparty" is rumored to be the real main event of the night. A black-tie affair in the lavish, opulent ballroom, it is every new Knight's chance to mingle and meet some of their new brothers in arms. Of course, a couple hours are provided following the ceremony for everyone to change, do hair and makeup, and choose from the vast array of formal attire in the closets of the balcony "dressing rooms" located at the top of spiraled staircases on either side of the ballroom. A separate dressing room exists for men and women, and they include full bathrooms (with, thankfully, very modern plumbing).

The squires are usually among the last to arrive, and the ballroom is full to the brim with a fancy array of people, of all shapes, sizes and species.

Hope you aren't shy. They're all here to meet you.

Feel free to make your own open threads for people to come congratulate your newly pledged knight.

ooc; also if your Knight wants to get all gussied up, you can make a Disguise (Cha) check for how good they were at hair/makeup/stylin', etc! This goes for... any time.

I'm an ethologist. I mostly study reptiles. Or, I would if I hadn't ended up working in a pet shop.

[ And she did not realize how potentially awkward that might sound until she said it. ]

Reptiles, hmm? [ his eyes widen a bit... and then he blows out a loud laugh ] Well, you seem to have come to the right place.

Oh no, now I put my foot in it.

[ She covers her face with her hands, mortified. ]

That sounded terrible, I'm sorry. I really didn't mean any disrespect.

[ still laughing, he waves a hand dismissively ] No, no, my dear! Don't worry at all. I thought it rather ironic, actually.

[ All right, he seems to be taking it well enough that she can show her face again. ]

I'd be lying if I said that people like yourself don't wake a rather significant scientific interest in me.

Not going to try to dissect me in my sleep, I hope!

[ That startles a laugh out of her. ]

Are you that deep a sleeper?

[koraith]

You'd be surprised! My kind can hibernate for long periods, dearie, and that's the deepest of sleeps right there.

That's fascinating.

[ Not that hibernating reptiles is a new concept to her of course, but this feels like a very different thing. ]

Used to be something of a survival tactic for many dragonfolk, before we were outed to the world as more than myth. When magic would vanish for years at a time, we'd sleep them away.

That seems like a very sensible strategy. Do you sleep the entire time, or wake up every now and then? Oh, and are you cold blooded?

[ Yep, scientific curiosity is definitely overriding tact here. ]

It's a hibernation, so we sleep like the dead until our bodies need replenishing energy. Very restful, actually.

[ he looks amused by her bombardment and cheerfully explains: ] Warm-blooded, if you want to be technical, but that's not quite right either. Our body temperature doesn't change: the elements themselves flow through our veins and keep it balanced, not our metabolism or sweat or any of those other annoyances. Cold dragons run cold all the time inside... fire breathers always run hot, no matter where they are.

So, are you actually a dragon?

[ Because boy had myth gotten things mixed up in that case. ]

Half of one! [ a broad laugh ] One parent human, one, well, you can guess.

You're half a... Oh my gosh, I'm sorry but this is very exciting for me.

But, how? I mean, I don't know anything about dragons other than stories...

[koraith]

[ he looks as if he gets this question a lot actually, but it's still a little embarrassing. he makes an odd huffing noise as he hesitates ] Well, you see, it isn't always easy for a dragon to hide itself when it finds itself surrounded by humanoids, and sometimes for its own safety it must blend in. Many dragons possess the magical capability to change their shape, and... you can imagine what, er, follows.

Love, my dear, comes in many strange shapes.

Oh, I see, that's... incredible.

I'm not going to bother you with more personal questions, I'm sure I'll have ample opportunity to learn more in this place. You have some truly amazing resources.

I'm... actually hoping I might even learn a little more about myself one day.

Oh? You wouldn't be the first to go seeking a better understanding of where they came from in our libraries.

I only wish I had something to go on. I remember absolutely nothing from before I came here. I've been here for something like twenty years now and in all that time... nothing.

A very frustrating situation - understandably! I was in much the same predicament some hundred odd years ago when I arrived here.
