[ It's not until Buffy's a bit more settled in and Jack's returned from some business that he's able to hold true to his promise to set up a meeting for her with the head of the Hellsing family. So one foggy London January morning, he drives her out to the Hellsing manor. The estate is intimidating on its own, though obviously not to the scale of the Knight's castle. It does, however, make up for it in the menacing aura that seems to hang about the entire exterior of the manor.

Jack pulls the car up to the front gate, and announces himself to the guard stationed there. After the soldier confirms it over headset, he waves them through, and the gates clatter open. ]

[ he lets out an amused snort, practically gliding with his long smooth strides to stand beside integra. ]

I see Wynnefalshond's knights haven't lost that sense of righteous indignation they love so very well. [ a pair of yellow glasses appears between his white gloves fingers and he slides them up his nose, pausing before covering his eyes to stare meaningfully back at buffy, that derisive smile never leaving his face ]

[ ALUCARD, NO BISCUIT ]

Sir Summers, allow me to introduce the Hellsing family's most valuable weapon: the vampire Alucard.

[ there's definite pride in her voice, even if she seems slightly annoyed by his intrusion, and if anything, the irritation she evinces causes him to grin more widely at her side. ]

[slay]

The vampire. [ her tone and expression sharpen, like that instills a great deal more censure than she'd already shown. her arms cross decisively over her chest. ] He doesn't look so tough.

[masterofmonster]

[ her words make his grin turn positively wolfish, but integra speaks up quickly before he can get any not-too-bright ideas. ]

I assure you, he gets the job done.

[slay]

Well, unless he wants to contribute something more than speculating about how interesting I am, I don't think he really needs to be here, do you?

I wanted to take stock of this vampire slayer for myself.

[ there's a strange manic glee in his eyes as he surveys her, and she gets the unnerving sensation that he can see straight into her heart. maybe even further.

he emits a low, amused murmuring sound. ] Ahhh. Yes. I see.

I thought you said she was human.

[ the comment causes both jack and integra to start a bit, and she turns to look at him sharply and demands: ] If you know something, Alucard, spit it out.

[ that jackal grin never fades for a moment, as he says provokingly, hellish eyes locked on hers: ] It takes a true monster to recognize another.

[slay]

What's that supposed to mean? [ he's trying to get a rise out of her. he has to be. there's doubt shaking her voice, though, because the fact is she doesn't know and there have been a good many times when she's wondered outright if what she's feeling isn't monstrous. her hand balls into a fist. ] Didn't it ever occur to you that a vampire baiting a demon slayer was a bad move?

[ gurl integra's irked at both of you now. her tone is terse as she says: ] I would ask you to refrain from my threatening my servant in my presence.

[ and she'll snap at him too. ] What do you mean, a monster?

I thought I was quite clear. Her power isn't human.

[ jack's hand weighs on buffy's shoulder ] Perhaps this was a bad idea.

[slay]

No. [ she shrugs jack's hand off aggressively, taking a few steps towards alucard. ] That thing knows something and he's going to explain. If it's not human, what the hell is it? How would you know?

[nolifeking]

[ alucard lifts his chin and leers down at her, obviously enjoying holding this over her head ]

It's as clear to me as the fear I can smell all over you. [ he chuckles darkly ] Oh, not fear of me. Which is amusing on its own.

No. You're afraid because you know I'm right. You can feel it.

That darkness.

[slay]

[ she stares at him for a long moment, professed horror creeping in. she fights it back down. ]

You're lying. This is some kind of trick, you're - [ she looks hastily over at jack, disgust and worry shifting into aggression. ] He's lying. [ and defensiveness. she looks to integra. ] Don't you think it's time you put a muzzle on your dog?

[masterofmonster]

[ integra speaks up crisply, her no-nonsense tone indicating she's ready to give you both after school detention, kiddies. ] It would seem to me that you demanded answers of my servant, so you have no right to be displeased with receiving them.

[ that doesn't mean you're off the hook, rover ] Alucard, leave us.

[slay]

And if I'd received answers instead of lies, maybe I'd be thanking him. But, I didn't.

[masterofmonster]

Alucard may be many things, but a liar has never been one of them. [ he grins at her as he melts back into the wall, red eyes flashing ]

[slay]

If he knew anything, he'd have a bit more than darkness to share with the class. [ she shakes her head. ] This was a waste of time. [ she looks at jack, eager to get out of there. ] Let's go.

We could use more soldiers able to always discern the location of the creatures we fight. If you find the Knights not to your satisfaction, [ jack frowns ] speak to Commander Ferguson.

[dragonsclaw]

[ coolly, as he nods to buffy to head to the door: ] Buffy isn't a soldier, Sir Integra.

[slay]

And the Knights have called me a monster all of never. Maybe before you try recruiting, you could work on your PR. [ she shoots a narrow look between them. ] Thank you for your time. [ she then follows jack's indication and turns to head out the door. ]

[dragonsclaw]

[ integra doesn't validate that with a response, simply watching them go, and as they get out the doors, jack says, shoulders slightly slumped ] I'm sorry I ever suggested this, Buffy.

[slay]

No, it's - It's not your fault that a vampire lies, Jack. I'm grateful that you did this. It means so much to me, even if ... even if we didn't learn anything. Don't be sorry for that.

[chessing]

Still, I had hoped it might be more conducive to helping you find some peace of mind. [ he steers her towards the lobby ] But perhaps it's for the best.
