It's only a few hour plane ride from England to Italy, but the team has a little time to settle in and get to know each other and/or ask questions of Zee in preparation for meeting with her dad.

And of course, when they arrive, she takes the lead, bringing them through the streets of Florence, Italy at night and leading them around the door of a sold out theater advertisement for the Amazing Zatara.

You might say it's the family business, now. But don't get the wrong idea: we're illusionists on-stage. There's an art to magic that we don't want to cheapen by leaning on our powers.

[Yeah, fuck you. Gold's not staying behind. This is like the eternal game of NOT IT.]

Deception will go a long way over sheer might. And it still gets the point across. [Says the guy who is like ooooh power. I like power.]

[Is anyone gonna stay behind and guard the door? Because it's clearly not Hook. He follows, still casting his usual suspicious looks at Gold.]

Seems like it'd give a better show to do the real thing.

Illusion is an art form. If people didn't think there was a possibility of trying to figure out 'how' it was done going in, they wouldn't be as impressed when they can't.

And enough of them believe that you're not putting real magic in it?

Suspension of disbelief is sort of the name of the game. Does it really matter which direction it's going in? [ she stops them at the curtain that leads to the backstage area and squares her shoulders, taking a deep breath ]

[He still doesn't have a great feeling about going in with a full gang flanking her. Charming pauses when Zatanna does, looking around quickly and muttering under his breath:]

Here we go.

[ she pushes the door open and they would see into the dimly lit area behind the now closed red curtain. the crowd is still applauding, and a dapper looking man wearing magician's coattails is removing his top hat, which he tucks into the crook of his arm as he turns to see them. surprise widens his eyes slightly, as he looks from zee to the others, and then back to his daughter. ]

Zatanna? [ there's warmth in his voice, and he obviously considers it a pleasant drop-in on her behalf, but he's also noticeably on edge about the troupe that's following her ] What's all this? [ something seems to occur him abruptly, and his bushy eyebrows knit together in concern ] Has something happened?

We're hoping you'll fill us in on that.

[Gold gives Hook the most JUDGEY LOOK EVER. Wow, way to make it sound like they're mafia... says the guy in the nice suit with the cane and the "don't fuck with me" face.

He turns his attention to Zantanna's dad, all business.]

We're here regarding your wife.

[ well, that certainly gets his attention. he looks absolutely shocked at the suggestion, the color immediately drawn from his face. ] My wife, sir? [ a secondary revelation appears to occur to him, then, and his eyes dart back to his daughter. ] Zatanna, I don't know what you might think you've come here for but--

[ she cuts him off before he can complete the thought ] She spoke to me. [ the concern in his gaze mingles with pure amazement at the suggestion ] She's alive, and I think you know something about why. [ while she asserts it confidently, it's also clearly painful for her to accuse her father of betraying her trust, and he seems to note the vulnerability. ]

My darling girl, you must have been mistaken... [ he speaks very carefully, evenly, as if trying to calm an irrational child one is very fond of. ]

I- I don't know what put the idea into your head, but your mother died years ago. We should not sully her memory with these macabre accusations. [ his eyes scan the rest of them briefly, as if he's trying to calculate what their role in all this is ] I'm sure your... friends here would agree with that.

With all due respect, sir... If there's any chance that your daughter's right, that her mother is alive, then we're going to find her.

[ ... emma actually crit failed her sense motive check.

i guess she's emotional over all this family shit and her superpower is broken idefk. either way she's trying to get a read on if papa zatara is lying so this will go well. ]

so emma ONE HUNDRED PERCENT BELIEVES THAT HE IS TELLING THE TRUTH here, wow zatanna stop being a bitch and insulting your mom's memory.

she doesn't stop tho. ]

Don't make this harder than it has to be. I know you might think you're protecting me, but I'm a grown woman now.

[ emma's intervening now on her father's behalf. ]

He's telling the truth, he doesn't know anything!

[Gold shoots Emma a "gurl what is wrong with you" look, but he got a 17 on his sense motive check, so he's pretty suspicious right now.]

And the girl's dreams mean nothing? [He turns back to Giovanni.] With all due respect, we did come a long way. And the subject might be painful for both of you to deal with, but I trust you realize it will be much more painful if you continue to lie to her. You see, lies have a tendency to come out when you least want them to. So better she hears the truth now- whatever that truth might be.

[Nat 20 Diplomacy check, bitches.]

[ damn gold, you and your way with words. zatara looks struck, paling entirely and then looking down, a heavy sadness working into his features as his brows collide. ]

You don't understand what you're asking. But he's right... if I know you, you'll only head off to find her on your own if I don't tell you anything.

[ he raises his head and looks at his daughter, sadly ] Your mother's alive, yes. Her death - the accident - was a lie we constructed before she left, to spare you the pain of knowing you would never see her again. [ zee's face reflects the complicated emotions this confession elicits, as she looks torn between relief at her mother being alive, and a sense of betrayal at the lies woven around her since youth ] Sindella was a very singular woman, and her people... were looking for her.

They were too dangerous to be allowed to come anywhere near the thing she held dearest in the world -- you, Zatanna.

[Charming feels a tug in his chest at the exchange. His gaze drifts briefly to Emma before he focuses back on the task at hand.]

Is there any reason why she would reach out to your daughter? If it was all meant to protect her, why would she risk that?

Maybe because those dangerous people found her, and she needs help. [ she's going to gloss right over her being wrong yep. ]

[ its zatanna who speaks, her words sliding out as if she can't hold them in any longer ] And she's in greater danger than she ever expected to be.

If that's the case, father, you have to tell me.

[ the older magician shakes his head immediately, refuting some part of that ] You didn't know her, Zatanna. [ the reminder is gentle, at least, rather than a blunt counter ] She would have died rather than allow you to be placed at risk.

No, it's much more likely that she wished to contact me, but was unable to. I've take great precautions since my return to keep my whereabouts warded at most times...

[ he squares his shoulders and looks up, replacing the top hat on his head ] I'm the one who must find Sindella, and help her, if I can.

All due respect, [ emma prefaces in a tone that makes it clear she's not actually giving a lot of respect and there's nothing remotely respectful in what's about to follow, ] But whether she meant it for you or not, you're not the one who got the distress call broadcast into your head. I think if Zatanna wants to follow up on this, that's her call to make - not yours.

You lied to her. You and Sindella both - but it's out now, and there's not much point to trying to keep her out of it anymore. [ diplomacy 15 ]

[ well you almost succeeded emma so i guess you're WEARING HIM DOWN?? ] Zatanna won't get far without my help.
