The "afterparty" is rumored to be the real main event of the night. A black-tie affair in the lavish, opulent ballroom, it is every new Knight's chance to mingle and meet some of their new brothers in arms. Of course, a couple hours are provided following the ceremony for everyone to change, do hair and makeup, and choose from the vast array of formal attire in the closets of the balcony "dressing rooms" located at the top of spiraled staircases on either side of the ballroom. A separate dressing room exists for men and women, and they include full bathrooms (with, thankfully, very modern plumbing).

The squires are usually among the last to arrive, and the ballroom is full to the brim with a fancy array of people, of all shapes, sizes and species.

Hope you aren't shy. They're all here to meet you.

Feel free to make your own open threads for people to come congratulate your newly pledged knight.

Arcane? You mean...like magic?

[rationalizes]

Well, yes, although the word is often used interchangeably - albeit erroneously - with arcana as well (when what they really mean is arcanum) as a catch all for studies of everything from the Shadow World.

[Well, Gar, you have her undivided attention. Because this sounds like something that isn't magic, so she tries to steer the conversation that way.

I'm sorry, you lost me a bit. What's arcanum?

[rationalizes]

[ with a captive audience, gar will never shut up again. ] Well, from a purely linguistic definition, arcanum relates to any deep secret or mystery of a specialized nature, which is often dismissed as supernatural or magical by those who don't understand it, or specialize in it. We apply, therefore, the term to the study of anything not from this world, but its a false assumption to merely dismiss all of it as 'magic'. The creatures and qualities of those worlds are clearly defined, and though the science may involve fields we've never thought to study, that doesn't make it any less classifiable!

Ah, so you were speaking of the definition of the word. I thought that maybe it meant something more specific here.

[She nods, though.]

Alchemists simply refer to it as magic, though humans are not able to work it.

[Thankfully.]

Being from an organization that deals with the only supernatural beings in my world, managing them, I would have hoped I'd be more prepared than this.

[rationalizes]

How interesting. What matter of being do you 'manage'?

Moroi and Strigoi. Vampires.

[She realizes she should probably elaborate.]

It was decided a long time ago that humans couldn't know about their existence, so we, the Alchemists, are tasked with keeping them hidden and their worlds separate.

[rationalizes]

Are vampires all very dangerous, in your world?

[celerystick]

Yes, very much so. They're unnatural, and obviously predators.

[She pauses, though, and clarifies further.]

There were two kinds, though. One was far worse than the other.

What distinguished one from the other?

Moroi are born. They live and they die after a normal lifespan. And they're capable of elemental magic.

[But they were no less dangerous, capable of becoming the other kind at any time.]

Strigoi are undead monstrosities, losing their soul and morality in the process of their creation. They kill without remorse, and lose their magic if they were Moroi before they were made.

[rationalizes]

Vampires who ... reproduce sexually? [ hold on she's stuck on that part buzzawhaaa ]

Moroi do, yes. They can reproduce with humans or dhampir as well, which produces more dhampirs, though Moroi do not associate with humans, generally.

How entirely fascinating. Moroi aren't undead, then. Does that mean they're resistant to the effects of holy weapons?

[celerystick]

No, they aren't undead, and most of them practice Christianity, I believe. There are churches within their Academies. They're still dangerous, though.

If they kill a human by taking their blood, they turn into a Strigoi, losing their soul and their magic in the process. It turns their skin an ash grey color, though they're effectively immortal.

That's only one way to create Strigoi, but it's the easiest one.

These... Strigoi sound more like what we call vampires in our world.

Are they common?

[rationalizes]

'Common' might be something of a stretch. I've only ever met one myself, and he's an exception to the rule.

Exception to your rule? Meaning he's closer to a Moroi?

[But not common is a good thing. A very good thing.]

[rationalizes]

Well, he seems quite in control of his, erm, appetites, and he fights for good - with us, actually.

[celerystick]

[She shifts uncomfortably.]

Then, yes, he definitely sounds more like a Moroi, then. They're still dangerous, though.

[rationalizes]

[ gar gives her a somewhat sympathetic smile ] Well, yes, but almost all our Knights are, in their own way. It's something I'm quite glad of, when we fight on the same side.

[celerystick]

It's very different than where I'm from. Humans and...supernatural creatures don't coexist well. It's odd to see.

[She was going to say vampires, but there's way more than just that here. And by odd she means skin-crawling.

Still, she decided she was going to do this and she'd have to adjust. She as clearly the only one here with this problem.]

It's still something rather new in this world as well. Mankind only became truly aware that we weren't alone in the last century. The transition wasn't always... a smooth one.

I'm sure humans were terrified. With good reason.
