Lis'sa meets the squires inside the laboratory, behind its "Biohazard" labelled doors. She doesn't really offer much of a greeting, or even introduce herself - just waits inside the strange multi-storied library section until everyone is gathered, and then instructs them to follow her up the steps.  A great deal of models are suspended from the ceiling that look like space age designs for jet planes, cars, boats, and any number of other things. There are other objects that are much more inexplicable: a giant silver ball, suspended by several rods, for example.

There's another set of doors at the end of the balcony, and she swipes an access card through a reader besides them. They depress with a space age his. revealing a clean white laboratory, with rows and rows of tables and lab equipment set up. Numerous knights buzz around in white lab coats, working under microscopes and on computers, conferring over a number of projects.

"This way," she instructs simply, not sparing the lab a second glance, heading for a door on the left hand side of the room.  She presses a hand against the panel there, and the red light changes to green, unlocking the door for everyone's access.

Beyond is a very long room, with rows of labelled cases and cabinets with transparent glass revealing what's inside.  Lis'sa steps crisply to the other side of the large stainless steel table.

Excalibur brand pistol

[Lis'sa gestures at seven aluminum cases lined up along the floor by the glass case.]

Help yourself to one. These contain your Excalibur - a modified Glock 17 handgun. You'll be expected to train with it if you have no firearms experience, though if you have no interest in using the weapon, you may leave it here.

We ask that all Knights train in some manner to defend themselves, but whether you prefer gun, sword, martial arts, or something combination thereof, is entirely up to you.

[Opening a case reveals a weapon that looks something like this, except that it also has the Knight's symbol of a dragon on the handle, and the words EXCALIBUR across the barrel. Below it are located several 17 shot magazines and a silencer]

Misuse of a firearm, or failure to avail yourself of the necessary training will result in consequences, which could include a denial of your position as a Full Knight of this Order.

[Again Riddick says nothing as they are offered the guns. He instead "helps himself to one" as she had suggested, setting the case on the table and opening it immediately. With quick, deft movements and a nat 20 disable device check he tears the entire gun down within seconds and lays it, disassembled, upon the table.

He begins examining each separate part of the gun, then looks in the case for the standard cleaning kit that comes with it, pulling out a file. He picks up the barrel of the gun and very gently files at the end that would be inside the handle, then takes a brush from the kit as well and brushes away what debris he just filed.

After looking the rest of the gun over he just as quickly re-assembles the weapon, puts it and the kit back in their case, and takes it off the table. He looks at Lis'sa and says in a rumbling voice-]

Might want to have that checked out in the rest of your guns. That catch could cause the weapon to blow back on the Knight using it, or cause a misfire that would make the whole damn thing explode.

[Lis'sa watches this with a look of something close to actual surprise on her face. She at least raises one eyebrow quite high.]

... An anomaly, I'm sure.

[That causes Riddick to smirk. Seems she didn't like being told her toys weren't perfect. He shrugs but wants to make sure she at least considers having the rest of this batch checked so his new fellow squires won't die or kill anyone else while just in the shooting range.]

Maybe. Guess it's up to you, but with that type of thing it's usually the mold used when making the gun, and that "anomaly" will probably be on the whole batch. Well... except for mine. [He says that last with an "I'm an asshole" grin.]

Are you volunteering for the position of checking them all, Sir Riddick?

I'm not using one.

[Katniss is quick to decide this, and just stares at the handguns. Nope, she doesn't trust herself with one. Why in the world would these people trust a teenager with one, if she can't even trust herself?

Besides, it's not what she's used to using.]

I prefer my bow. [She elaborates, looking almost sheepish at speaking up about this. A part of her feels that maybe she should have just accepted the gun and stored it somewhere, only to never use it. But that would be wasteful.]

[Riddick looks over as he hears the girls voice. A bow was pretty respectable, especially if you know how to use it. From her staring he got the sense that maybe she was intimidated by them, but more than that, she held them in contempt as well. He agreed with her, though it didn't hurt to be proficient in more than one area.]

Bow's a good choice if you have good control. Much quieter, anyway. [He rumbles this while looking over the gadgets behind them, then moves towards them nonchalantly. No need to feel all... advice-giving- friendly. Or to make her feel like he thought she was seeking approval. Cuz he didn't.]

[Lis'sa simply nods, as if she gives no fucks what you decide] As I said. It is entirely your decision.

[Control? She almost looks offended that he'd doubt she would have control over a bow.]

I wouldn't be suggesting that I use one if I didn't have good control.

[She feels as if she should have a preference in sound between a bow and a gun, though. It bothers her that she doesn't.]

[He smirks at her defensive answer, holding up his hands in an "okay" gesture. He liked her grit.]

Oh I'd never think of questioning your control, kid. I was just admiring your choice as being quieter than a gun. You have to be so much more involved in the fight if you have a bow. Much more personal.

[Andrea looks the weapon over with some measure of fascination. She's not sure how much she trusts these. The gods knew she would prefer her rapier, but she also knew it was suited to everything. She'd trained in the use of a bow for that reason, but if these were more efficient, then it might not hurt to at least give it a fair try.]

How powerful are these things, anyway?

Bullets can pierce through most forms of armor. [She would go into a detailed discussion of the way the gun itself is only as powerful as the ammo used in it but she figures its a lost cause] It harnesses the energy from one shot to reload the next, making it a very simple weapon to fire multiple times in rapid succession.

[She's not as dumb as she sounds, though assuredly a lessen like that would take quite a bit of time to impart.

Andrea lets a quiet, appreciative whistle]

Improvement on your standard crossbow, that's for sure.

[She leans forward...still not sure about actually touching the gun...and says thoughtfully]

I guess that's why that armor we wore at ceremony looked more ceremonial than practical.

Precisely. To be honest, most of our agents don't opt for wearing much in the way of armor at all, unless they plan to be walking into a firefight. In which case, we do have bullet proof vests available.

[And next up is guns is it? Like Riddick, he helps himself to one, fingers brushing over the catch as he looks over first the case then the catch and then finally over the contents of it, taking his time. There's little rush in his movements.

Unlike Riddick though when he takes the gun out he just examines it, flipping it over in his hand, making sure it's not loaded before he takes a look anywhere near the wrong end of it, looking. Mostly as she had said modified and it caught his interest to see if he could figure out how.]

You said they are modified, how so?

They've been converted to carry a higher caliber bullet, and re-engineered by our ballistics team for more precise accuracy than the standard police weapon can produce.

[ After hearing about guns at the feast, Arthur is interested to try one for himself — mostly because he feels it's his obligation to master every weapon he comes across. It doesn't look at all like he expected, and he touches the gunmetal lightly, looking down on it in the case. ]

Excalibur, though. Really.

[LOOK, SHE DIDN'T NAME IT THAT.] You might have noticed the thematic nomenclature around here.

Yes, funnily enough, it caught my notice.

Wynn's never really gotten the hang of what the word 'overkill' means.

[Excalibur. Yeah.]

[Merlin looks at the gun a touch nervously. He's never been...especially gifted with weapons. He can manage a sword well enough, but sometimes even it gets knocked out of his hands. And doing something stupid with one of these...handguns obviously has serious consequences.]

[He'll be leaving his here.]

So...we don't have to use a firearm if we can use actual fire?

[Who says there's no such thing as a dumb question.]

[That question gets a loud gauwffing laugh out of Riddick, looking skinny Merlin up and down.]

Very spunky of you, kid. I'd like to see that in action sometime.

Correct. But we still encourage mages to learn some form of physical self defense. As you may or not have heard, magic isn't a constant in this world. If you rely on it too heavily, you could find yourself in deep water when it vanishes.

[ That supercilious, and vaguely dubious, tone he's using? Probably not wholly encouraging! But it is actually a genuine question. ]
