Huh? [ It takes a moment for that to register. ] Oh. No, I don't really remember my family. It's, uh. I spent a lot of time in cemeteries. Like a destiny thing.

Doesn't sound like the pick of the destiny litter there.

Isn't that kinda how destiny works? You don't get a choice and it usually sucks.

Actually... I think that's exactly how it works. Good point. [ he looks over the tombs with a frown ] So what kind of destiny is so... morbid? Or do you not want to talk about it?

[watcherjunior]

[ She dusts the remaining dirt from her hands before standing. ] One girl in the whole wide world, chosen to fight vampires, demons, and the assorted things that go bump in the night.

Just one? But there's like... lots of people who do that kind of thing, aren't there?

[watcherjunior]

Not where I'm from. The job--the destiny thing came with powers. But it looks like coming here, those are gone. Destiny sentence commuted.

What about the powers?

[watcherjunior]

Gone, I guess. [ She sounds unsure. ] I mean, if they're still around, I haven't been able to use or access them.

What were they - like magical smiting powers?

[watcherjunior]

Super strength and speed. Your typical comic book superhero-y stuff. [ Pause. ] Not that I think I was a hero or something. It was just a job.

Like Buffy? [ he chuckles ] Man, I wish I got any of that superhero business.

[watcherjunior]

Like Buffy? [ She sounds genuinely confused and interested. ] She's got something like that?

[nosdacariad]

The super strength and speed? Yeah. ... And she can see demons. But so can Spike.

[watcherjunior]

Huh. That's-- [ She'd have to file this away to ask them about later. Maybe they could be from the same place. Maybe Buffy's a Slayer from before her. Or after her. ] Weird. But weird seems to be a running theme in my life.

If you're the only one in your world who can fight them, what's going to happen now that you're gone? With the... vampires and whatnot? [ he sounds VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THIS ]

I guess the next girl will be chosen? I mean, that's what happens when I... [ The thought makes her blood turn cold. Saying it as if it happened to herself is too close. ] ...when the Slayer dies. I imagine disappearing like that would count too.

At least you don't have anything to feel guilty about then, being relieved of your destiny.

No, I guess not. [ Though she sounds far from relieved. ]

[watcherjunior]

[ Cue vague schlumpy shrug of vagueness. ] I felt useful-ish then. Since I got here to Chicago, uh... you know, not so much.

It's a dumb feeling. I'm sure it'll pass.

[ he shifts a bit, frown cutting further across his face ] I don't think you're useless. ... But I know the feeling.

[watcherjunior]

[ She gives him a half-smile, nodding. ] Thanks. [ Takes a deep breath. ] Guess I'm useful now, though. Graveyard duty.

I can't claim to be a big fan of 'em.
