The paths to the Knighthood are as unique as the individuals who comprise its widespread organization. But all of their tales have one aspect in common: their first trip to the castle that serves as the primary headquarters for their operations occurs blindfolded, generally with the member who had recommended them for service as their escort.

Only when the car had pulled up to the front steps of the opulent building are they unmasked and allowed to follow inside.

Within the wide front hall is what looks like a receptionist desk to the left, manned by any one of a number of usually young Knights, who make the newly arrived sign into an ancient looking tome with hundreds of yellowed pages, along with today's date, usually accompanied by a look of curiosity from whoever's working the desk. Either way, they ask no questions.

They are then directed down the main ground floor hallway, which seems to stretch on for a great distance, passing tapestries of a mostly medieval flavor, suits of armor and weaponry lining the walls, and archways that open into opulent ballrooms, extra wings with numerous doors, poshly decorated parlors and more.

It's in front of an incredibly large painting that they come to a stop, drawing some kind of keycard out of their wallet or pockets and using it to open a small glass case containing a fire extinguisher to the right of the artwork. They pull the extinguisher upwards like a lever, making it clear it's just for show, and a loud mechanism creaks behind the wall, as the entire mural swings aside slowly to unveil a torch lit hallway. Escorts leave their charges to go on from here alone, usually with a nod or word of encouragement.

There's something solemn about the long stone corridor, made only more so by the fact that almost every inch of the walls on either side is covered in paintings, tapestries, rugs, artifacts, carvings, etc. that depict various images from the Knights' history, of those in armor battling against all manner of twisted and dangerous creatures. There's another constantly reoccurring image as well - of a gigantic silver dragon battling against armies of dark elves, or just one dark elf in particular, who is often depicted with a certain circular symbol somewhere on his wicked looking armor.

More prominent than this collection of madly arranged images is the incredibly large lettering inscribed over the large doors at the end of the hallway.

Thou Shalt Defend the Knighthood.
Thou Shalt respect all Weaknesses, and Shalt constitute thyself the Defender of them.
Thou Shalt not recoil before thine Enemy.
Thou Shalt make War against Injustice, without Cessation and without Mercy.
Thou Shalt never lie, and shall remain Faithful to thy pledged Word.
Thou Shalt be Generous, and listen to and Respect All.
Thou Shalt be Everywhere and Always the Champion of the Right and the Good against Injustice and Evil.

The room that stretches out beyond those doors, however, is enough to wrench the eyes off the inscription. It houses an incredibly large, thick, wooden table constructed in the round, surrounded by at least twenty five chairs. Rising from the center from the table is a massive statue that appears to be made of glass or crystal, depicting a dragon in flight. Suspended in the middle of the statue is a proud looking sword, that looks as if it's merely hovering there because of the statue's transparent nature. The statue rises up towards the vaulted ceilings as if it means to break free and soar out of the room, creating a very otherworldly aspect to the setting.

It may take a moment for those who enter to realize they are not fully alone, as Wynn waits on the exact opposite side of the table, facing a pair of incredibly tall sealed doors, that appear to be gilded in gold leaf. His hands are locked behind him, laced white cuffs falling over them, one ring visible on his left hand. His height is intimidating, at a full six foot seven, and his posture rigid and impeccable. He wears an old-fashioned tailored coat worked with silver and dark blues, over a silver and white doublet, framed with gleaming buttons that have tiny dragons worked onto them in brushed silver. He says nothing - doesn't even so much as turn, as if he doesn't even register that anyone has arrived.

Once inside, the doors fall shut with a ponderous thud, of what seems to be their own accord.

You have?

[Ugh, smooth. She grins, feeling a little silly, and shakes her head. She knew perfectly well that they would have filled him in on her arrival and what she'd done.]

I mean, of course you have. [She tries to give him a polite smile, tucking hair behind one ear.] Good things, I hope?

[Her previously polite and somewhat nervous smile widens into something proud.]

Jack and Thomas are both wonderful and strong people. It's an honor to have even met them.

[They gave her hope that she could be as strong someday, too.]

[She bit at her bottom lip as she tried to decide what exactly to say.]

I know there's a lot I don't know yet, but I want to learn. And I can tell you guys are doing good things, and I want to be a part of that. I want to help people like your Knights helped me.

[She looks thoughtful.]

It was dangerous, I know. But when I was with them, doing things, I felt like I belonged there, if that makes sense. Like it was fate that I was dropped where I was.

[Her eyes light up and it's clear that the smile she's giving him is a bit restrained, because she has to hold in her excitement.]

Well, good, because that's exactly what I want.

Myri did?

[Best news ever. Her face lights up.]

So she'll be my...mentor, kind of?

[She smiles and nods in understanding.]

Thank you. For believing in me.

[Oddly enough, the castle (or, the parts of it which he had been permitted to see) made Aedan feel much more at ease than anything else he'd experienced since he'd chosen to follow Morrigan through the Eluvian, only to find himself here.

Perhaps that's why he felt the need to address the tall figure standing at the other side of the table before being spoken to--or even so much as acknowledged, for that matter.]

Am I right to assume that this is the usual manner in which guests are received?

[Whether he was providing commentary on the odd ceremony that brought him here, or simply asking out of ignorance due to being almost entirely unfamiliar with the customs of this world was hard to discern.

Helpful hint: It's actually a little bit of both.]

[personal profile] ex_noble101 2013-04-04 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
[Well, that made a little more sense. Sort of. This wasn't exactly a small out of the way location. Surely anyone with a map, or a pair of eyes and enough want to seek it out could discover its location. Then again, most of Aedan's knowledge of this world came from a homeless man who had a tendency to hold conversations with his cat. Hey, it happened enough with Anders to seem semi-normal at this point ok.

He opts against following up by commenting on the matter further, or inquiring as to the reasoning behind his being brought to this man specifically. It only made sense that it would be explained to him, and he wasn't actively looking to appear especially ignorant and/or rude by presuming any more than he already had.]

[So. Dragons are a theme. Also, bags over heads? Not necessarily good for hair, especially when you're trying to make a good first impression.

Felicity lags at the nearest reflective surface to fix that particular problem (disguise check: 25) before following Val'drin to the Staircase of Intimidating Artwork. Or maybe it's supposed to be the Staircase of Showing Off. Either way, she's more interested in the workmanship than what's actually on them, her trained eyes scout for signatures and signs of ownership before continuing on her way to the office of the Really Tall Bossman.

(She really is taking this seriously. She just doesn't know how else to quantify that she is going to be a
Knight of all things.)

Still, she knows that it's better to speak before spoken to. Once the door slams shut she'll wait, taking stock of the room and the items in it as she goes.]

[ ... She is. Sort of. But she's stubborn enough that she's not going to give him the satisfaction of knowing that.]

It's probably not as simple as since you were doing the same thing, stealing stuff isn't one of the things you worry about on your moral high horse.

[ ... Felicity, that is not a good first impression.]

... That sounded less offensive in my head.

[personal profile] ex_noble101 2013-04-16 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
That sounds like a noble enough cause.

[He wasn't entirely convinced, but it was a start. Things weren't often what they appeared--particularly when dealing with the Fade, which is the closest thing Aedan could relate this other world to.]

I take it you've many enemies...

[He lets that last part linger there. They hadn't exactly been formally introduced, yet this man appeared to know at least something about him--enough to identify him as a potential candidate. It only seemed fair to be presented with a name.]

[Enter, Phineas Dantalion. He's looking a bit plane-sick... and the jarring ride coupled with blindfolding didn't help much, either. He had to do a double take when he saw the sigil attributed to the dark Elf. That may require further research.]

I'm not usually one for castles... They tend to be dank, still, and oppressive; and filled with [Sizing up the dragon statue] gaudy decoration. But, gods I'll take this over that flying contraption and that damned-able desert any day-o-the ten, am I right... uh...?

[Phineas struggles to remember if he was told who he was meeting... He actually, despite quite a bit of discourse, recalls very little from the plane ride over, and less from the blindfolded trip which only compounded his throbbing migraine]

[Not easily offended. Good to know.]

Do I get a gold star for getting it right?
