The paths to the Knighthood are as unique as the individuals who comprise its widespread organization. But all of their tales have one aspect in common: their first trip to the castle that serves as the primary headquarters for their operations occurs blindfolded, generally with the member who had recommended them for service as their escort.

Only when the car had pulled up to the front steps of the opulent building are they unmasked and allowed to follow inside.

Within the wide front hall is what looks like a receptionist desk to the left, manned by any one of a number of usually young Knights, who make the newly arrived sign into an ancient looking tome with hundreds of yellowed pages, along with today's date, usually accompanied by a look of curiosity from whoever's working the desk. Either way, they ask no questions.

They are then directed down the main ground floor hallway, which seems to stretch on for a great distance, passing tapestries of a mostly medieval flavor, suits of armor and weaponry lining the walls, and archways that open into opulent ballrooms, extra wings with numerous doors, poshly decorated parlors and more.

It's in front of an incredibly large painting that they come to a stop, drawing some kind of keycard out of their wallet or pockets and using it to open a small glass case containing a fire extinguisher to the right of the artwork. They pull the extinguisher upwards like a lever, making it clear it's just for show, and a loud mechanism creaks behind the wall, as the entire mural swings aside slowly to unveil a torch lit hallway. Escorts leave their charges to go on from here alone, usually with a nod or word of encouragement.

There's something solemn about the long stone corridor, made only more so by the fact that almost every inch of the walls on either side is covered in paintings, tapestries, rugs, artifacts, carvings, etc. that depict various images from the Knights' history, of those in armor battling against all manner of twisted and dangerous creatures. There's another constantly reoccurring image as well - of a gigantic silver dragon battling against armies of dark elves, or just one dark elf in particular, who is often depicted with a certain circular symbol somewhere on his wicked looking armor.

More prominent than this collection of madly arranged images is the incredibly large lettering inscribed over the large doors at the end of the hallway.

Thou Shalt Defend the Knighthood.
Thou Shalt respect all Weaknesses, and Shalt constitute thyself the Defender of them.
Thou Shalt not recoil before thine Enemy.
Thou Shalt make War against Injustice, without Cessation and without Mercy.
Thou Shalt never lie, and shall remain Faithful to thy pledged Word.
Thou Shalt be Generous, and listen to and Respect All.
Thou Shalt be Everywhere and Always the Champion of the Right and the Good against Injustice and Evil.

The room that stretches out beyond those doors, however, is enough to wrench the eyes off the inscription. It houses an incredibly large, thick, wooden table constructed in the round, surrounded by at least twenty five chairs. Rising from the center from the table is a massive statue that appears to be made of glass or crystal, depicting a dragon in flight. Suspended in the middle of the statue is a proud looking sword, that looks as if it's merely hovering there because of the statue's transparent nature. The statue rises up towards the vaulted ceilings as if it means to break free and soar out of the room, creating a very otherworldly aspect to the setting.

It may take a moment for those who enter to realize they are not fully alone, as Wynn waits on the exact opposite side of the table, facing a pair of incredibly tall sealed doors, that appear to be gilded in gold leaf. His hands are locked behind him, laced white cuffs falling over them, one ring visible on his left hand. His height is intimidating, at a full six foot seven, and his posture rigid and impeccable. He wears an old-fashioned tailored coat worked with silver and dark blues, over a silver and white doublet, framed with gleaming buttons that have tiny dragons worked onto them in brushed silver. He says nothing - doesn't even so much as turn, as if he doesn't even register that anyone has arrived.

Once inside, the doors fall shut with a ponderous thud, of what seems to be their own accord.

[So here's Des, just checking out the digs for himself after... IDK. The first mission that he consulted on. This is his initial debrief, I guess before he goes off on his own, so... Yeah, let's set that bitch up.

Anyway. He's pacing around the circle, running his hands over the table, and generally acting like he's inspecting the castle like he plans on buying it.]
Nice set-up you boys've got here.

[Des pats the table and turns to face him.] Reinventing the wheel-shaped table. [He's still not sure what he thinks of this whole operation, but they pay him and they're neutral enough not to bug him, so he can't complain.]

[Des's response is a flat look.] Some things oughta not have to. [And that's all he has to say about that.] This the part where you offer me a seat?

I don't sit by, but I don't do the whole Knighthood thing, Wynn. I told you that up front. It's strictly business- no strings. [A pause] I'm not a commitment kinda gal.

[...it's a little intimidating. Spike looks around, trying for nonchalant. He doesn't like being intimidated, and he likes even less admitting it.

He saunters up to the table, looking more confident than he feels and looks Wynn over.]

So. Knighthood. Can't say I saw that one coming. [Then again, maybe he did. He doesn't really remember much.]

[Andie's been thinking about doing this for a while. She knows her father has been too, though at least he hasn't outright said anything. This has to be her decision, she knows, and he shouldn't say anything to hurry her if she's not ready.

Long stories about his days as a knight or legacy or subtle hints probably don't count.

But Andie's not really the kind of girl who puts things off, so she heads over to Wynn's office. She enters, and almost changes her mind as soon as she's passed the threshold. Why would she become a knight now? What if she's not ready? What if--

She pushes those thoughts aside and walks towards Wynn, going fairly slowly for once.]

I've, uh, been thinking I might be ready to become a knight?

[Sven still doesn't know how to feel about all of this. He wants to be hopeful, but there's a part of him that doesn't believe something like this could even exist. He slowly walks across the room and approaches the table, arms crossed.]

What does all this ... entail, exactly?

[Yeah, Andie's not really surprised either. Her life's been leading up to this for a while now, and she's... she's ready. She thinks. At least she gets to be a squire first. She isn't sure what she'd do if she had to take full-on Knight responsibility right off the bat. Probably run. And she can run far.]

So. Where do I sign? Who do I get squired to? Do I get to choose?

[It's a good question, and one she'd sort of hoped she wouldn't have to face. The decision had been sort of laid out for her, after all. She doesn't want to imagine what her dad would say if she didn't become a knight.

She can't imagine doing anything else with her life, though, and she does want this. She wants to be a hero, like her mother and father before her. Being with the knights seems like it'll help her get there.

She nods slowly, which... pretty much looks like a normal speed nod coming from her. She's too nervous to be good at being slow.]

It's my decision.

Don't know about that. I might have been a lot all ready. [He mutters the words, looking away for a moment. He's bitter about the loss of memory. It's common, apparently, to lose memories when you come through the veil, but Spike doesn't have to like it.

He glances back up at Wynn, though, and forces himself to meet Wynn's eyes again.]

I'm interested, I think.

[Martha is a bit confused, which, she figures, is pretty normal, considering that she's found herself in an entirely different world - one full of magic and magical creatures. She's used to aliens and advanced technology, but this, well, this is just weird. The man across the table from her looks like something straight out of a fantasy book - she reckons he'd be incredibly good-looking if he wasn't so bloody intimidating. Not that he isn't good-looking anyway, but, well, the intimidating factor wins out.

She steps up to the table, smoothing her clothes nervously, and coughs to get his attention.]

Er. Hello.

[God, she sounds so lame.]
aproperdoctor: (facepalming/the doctor is an idiot)

[Great, this is totally welcoming. Martha feels right at home...except not. This isn't even the same England she's used to - it's close, but everything's off, like someone's gone to her flat and moved everything two inches to the left. (Except, of course, that her flat doesn't even exist in this world.)]

So, being a knight. How does it work?
