The "afterparty" is the real main event of the night at every squiring, but tonight's party is a little different than usual - Faith has successfully lobbied (as in roped people into helping her decorate for) a Chinese New Year's party, or Lunar New Year, theme. With Knights from all over the world, it was easy to get input from those who traditionally celebrate the holiday, and Wynn is all about the spirit of cultural unity. Not to mention, the second of the 15 days of the spring festival is all about spending time with one's family and friends.

The lavish, opulent ballroom has been transformed, filled with red lanterns, peach blossoms, kumquat plants, and chrysanthemums. People are encouraged to dress in red to ward off evil spirits and bad luck, and avail themselves of the New Year's Cake, golden champagne cocktail, rice pudding, candied fruits, and the Tray of Togetherness.

As always, it is every new Knight's chance to mingle and meet some of their new brothers in arms. Of course, a couple hours are provided following the ceremony for everyone to change, do hair and makeup, and choose from the vast array of formal attire in the closets of the balcony "dressing rooms" located at the top of spiraled staircases on either side of the ballroom. A separate dressing room exists for men and women, and they include full bathrooms (with, thankfully, very modern plumbing).
The squires are usually among the last to arrive, and the ballroom is full to the brim with a fancy array of people, of all shapes, sizes and species.

[ OH GOD SHE'S RIGHT THERE. he blinks a couple time, unnerved by her boldness, but reaches out to shake her hand, before gently turning her wrist to examine them more closely ] Aurelius... These are remarkable. I've never seen runes like those before.

I'm not sure they're of this world, even. I can't tell you exactly when they began to form, but they seem to be growing bolder, and more constraining, each day. Some kind of binding runes, I would assume.

Do you... know much about runes, then? [ because that would be awesome ]

Just sort of... objectively, yes. I mean, from reading about them. What kind of constraints are you speaking of?

Oh, I'm a genie. [ she offers sort of flippantly ] Cool, huh? Well... except for the whole tether thing. [ as she looks down at her wrist again ]

A... a genie? As in... wishes and deserts and... and lamps?

I don't know about... deserts, but yeah, the rest of it sounds about right.

I suppose I shouldn't be so shocked... There's so many different types of people here. But that's-- that's fascinating, really. I'd mostly only ever met humans, back home. And some elves.

[ she grins, glad he finds her fascinating ] I've actually never met another genie, I don't think, so I think you were appropriately confounded.

[ she got a spot 21 and a knowledge: arcane lore 20 to recognize he's a half-elf too ] And you're a half-elf, so I guess the human and elf majority probably makes sense.

[ he looks quite pleased that she's noticed and isn't all weird about talking about races, ok ] I've only ever met one other half-elf, actually. My father was from a somewhat secluded community, and it was only by chance that my mother met him. Their courtship never could have come to anything anyway, as he was bound by duty to his people and her to her own. So I was raised entirely around humans, with only rare occasion to visit him and his people.

Wow, that sounds... kind of horrible. Unless you like being so tied down, I guess. But this [ she motions to the crowd ] seems much more interesting.

I never really minded... I was studying to become an Elder Druid like my mother, which is about as fascinating as it gets. My sister was always the one who liked adventure and dreamed about going out into the world.

[ she got a 26 arcane lore check to know what an elder druid is! ] Oh, yeah, Elder Druid, that does sound exciting, actually.

Is your sister here, too?

I don't think so. At one time, I thought I'd heard something that implied she might be, but... it seems I was mistaken.

I hadn't seen her in a long time, even before I came to this world. She'd ran off to find her fortune and escape becoming a Sentinel of the Veil like our father had been when he died, and I hadn't heard from her since.

Sounds like a girl after my own heart.

Do you miss your home, then?

At times. But this world is fascinating in its own right... and it has been interesting to see things in person rather than all within the pages of dusty tomes.

Uh, yeah! [ as she nods enthusiastically ] I mean, I like books and stuff, too, but nothing beats experiencing the danger and excitement yourself.

Yes, but it's the danger part that's a little trying, when one isn't accustomed to it.

[ she gives his shoulder a light shove, laughing ] Oh come on, don't be a wimp. You don't look like a coward.

I'm not a coward. [ he brushes his shoulder off ] I said trying, not terrifying.

[ she laughs lightly again, because chill out, dude ] Okay, okay. Sorry. I get your point.

[ he looks a little embarrassed, but looks at her with shrewd interest ] Have you had many adventures, then?

If slaying a red dragon counts, then yes!

[ o_o s-so impressed ] I- I'm sure it does, yes! How many were you?
