The briefing was simple and direct: a string of disappearing Shadowkind centered around a small farming town in Wales. The Karthur Institute wasn't called in until the local authorities got reports of incessant, blood-curdling screams coming from a barn just past the edge of town. They found a girl curled in the corner there, screaming her lungs out, shaking, and looking like she'd been running around the forest alone for days.

They also found the five bodies of their missing townspeople in the barn.

They tell the knights (and thus, Wynn tells them) that the girl is in police custody, but they don't tell them that she's pinned in a cell. They've fed her and given her a coat by now, but the deputy is quick to alert Helen, Rose, Sydney, and Alaric as they arrive of the bad news.

"She hasn't shut up since we put her in there." He glances back over his shoulder, toward the lock-up. "Not screamin', just wanting to know who they were." He looks back at the knights, grim. "Don't think she's got any idea how she got out there. I don't have it in me to tell her I don't either; wherever she's rom, it inn't Pembrokeshire."

[So Alaric is a bloody mess at this point. On the bright side, at least he's still conscious. And now that he's managed to put the suburban between himself and the redneck with the 10-gauge shotgun, he's bought himself another couple of seconds at least.

He nearly collapses behind one of the vehicle's tires in an attempt to take cover because standing upright was starting to be an issue here. As was seeing straight and idk breathing. But he is trying to not die, and Eddie could easily turn his sights on Helen while she was occupied with the other woman.

Time to pull his shit together and see if he can go for the kill shot through the suburban's windows (attack 23, damage 11). It was either kill or be killed at this point and Ric wasn't trying to die again sry.]

[ Eddie goes down. The blood loss takes him unconscious, and he thankfully makes his fortitude save to stabilize. So he'll just be hanging out here unconscious.

Meanwhile, Helen gets the distinct impression that the cop's warning carries some weight. Despite the gun, maybe she's not lying about the repercussions from law enforcement here ... Now that Helen's listening, she stops struggling. ]

You don't know who you're messing with. We own this town.

[ As if on cue, a police car pulls up with officer incompetent in it. He pushes open the driver's door and steps out, using it as cover as he pulls out his bullhorn to speak with them from about 50 ft away while the civilians continue to flee. ]

Put the weapons down.

[ Smirking, the cop drops her gun, holding her hands up. ]

[Helen reluctantly releases the woman, hands up in the air but her gun still tucked into her pants from when she put it away to resort to hand to hand combat.]

This woman is impersonating a member of your agency and threatened our lives to delay our investigation. We were merely defending ourselves against the threat.

[Which would probably be more convincing if Ric hadn't shot someone's dick off...]

That woman is Officer Casey.

[ Officer Casey keeps her hands up, turning her back to her back-up and smiling at Helen as she begins to walk backwards away from them. ]

These two were waving guns at Eddie when I got here, boss. I asked them to lay down their weapons, and they refused.

[ The police officer straightens away from the driver's door and slams it shut, approaching. ]

Amy, what the hell? [ Officer Incompetent looks legitimately baffled. ] You know I'm gonna have to write you up for this one—you can't go around waving guns at civilians. [ The aside seems tense, but he sighs. ] We'll talk about this back at the station. [ To Helen and Ric: ] Ambulance is on its way. I'm going to check on Eddie. Don't make any sudden movements.

[Sudden movements? No, but Helen will be heading over for Ric, whether the cops like it or not.]

We need to get out of here. Now. [She says to him, quietly.]

[Ric nods, but waits to follow Helen's lead. If she wants to jump back in the car it's probably better that she drives considering his multiple gunshot wounds?? And if she wants to make a run for it on foot he will probably just slow her down so idk. Pick your poison, gurl...]

[ Unfortunately Officer Incompetent is less incompetent than he seems, I guess, because he rolled an 18 listen check and I'm not dealing with mods right now. So he heard that. ]

I said don't move!

[ He'll shout this time, and start approaching them. ]

You're coming back to the station with me until we sort this out.

[ Well, probably the hospital first for gimpy over there, but priorities. ]

[Wow, he said don't make any sudden movements. She was not moving suddenly. She was moving very calmly. Rude.

She gives a quick look to Ric to assess his condition, to decide if they should try to pick this fight. She's seen the state of the police station. They can likely get themselves out with minimal trouble, truly. But would the girls have time fro something like that?]

[For someone who was just blasted on with a 10-gauge shotgun, he actually looks pretty decent. But generally speaking? Ric ain't looking too good, gurl. He's holding on with his ... six hit points though. And he's ready to make a move if that's what they're doing here.]

[ Officer Incompetent looks at Amy. ]

Call Dr. Michaels.

[ He charges over to Ric and Helen stubbornly. ]

Neither of you are getting far. Come on.

[helen gives a nod, more for Ric than for the cop. They're not in good enough shape to run. And they wouldn't know where to go yet even if they did escape. They need to find this grand wizard. And right now they're best bet is to play along.]

[ He will be attempting to shuffle them into the back of his car while Officer Amy moves to wrangle up Eddy in another car. ]

[Helen gets in, scooting over to make room for Ric. It's not ideal, but they need to regroup and come up with a plan.]

How bad is it? [She says to Ric quietly, reaching out to have a look for herself even as she's asking the question.]

But he will show off his lovely flesh wounds to Helen idk gurl it was a shotgun that like took him from decent hit points to like almost five so it's probably not very pretty.]

Should we be trusting these people? [Like, I'm sorry but Eddie ran for a reason and he knew that the girls were with the Grand Fucking Wizard. Alaric was not exactly ready to take officer trigger happy or officer incompetent's word for anything.]

Likely not. [Just telling it like it is.] But we need to get you sewn up and possibly get some more information on the state of things in this bloody backwards town. It's our best chance of sorting out where this wizard is and where the girls are.

[ Inscrutable, he watches them in the rear view mirror a moment, then looks back out to take note of how Eddie and Amy are doing as he starts pulling the car around towards the station. ]

[asdkjg I assumed they'd have a hot second to talk between the time it took Officer Incompetent to shuffle them into the car and then waddle his ass into the driver's seat but I guess he is The Flash whoops.]

Someone abducted our friends, and since that asshole decided to flee the scene at about eighty miles per hour, it only made sense to follow him.

[So done. But he's all shot up so you'll have to fucking excuse his lack of civility atm.]

[Helen reaches over to gently touch Ric's knee, understanding exactly why he's so quick to anger, but knowing that they need to be cautious with how they move forward now that they've lost the upperhand.]

The two women we were with and the girl you had found- all of them were abducted within the Casey's store or somewhere behind it. Your friend with the van told us that he knows who took them but not where to find the culprit. All we want is to get our people back and see that poor girl set right in this world. If you help us find them, we'll be out of your hair for good. [Diplomacy 33]

[ He seems reluctant to believe it, but a sense motive 15+ can identify that it's more out of an emotional place than a logical one. The facts appear undeniable now that he's in the car with them, and he starts it up to get them back to the station. ]

Once your friend's seen a doctor, we can head on over to Amy and Eddie's place and take a look. They live with their family just a couple miles up the road.

[Where the girls might still be. To get rid of the evidence. Alaric is not trying to be the reason that something happens to them. In his condition he would probably be more of a liability to Helen anyway.]

You mean to tell me those two are related? [For the love of fucking Christ. Helen doesn't like the idea of leaving Ric alone, but she knows what prompts him to tell her to do so (wis 18).] We'll leave you the address so you can come after us once they've patched you up. [She's just going to keep making his injury sound like it's not as bad as it likely is. She's worried for Ric, but knows that he won't let her dally to see him treated.]
