Now officially Knighted, Vi exchanges her ceremonial armor for a wedding gown, and the guests head into London to gather at the Chelsea Physic Garden.  The evening is warm and clear, and the flowers in full bloom, chairs set up on the main lawn with name tags on them for people to find their seat.  Gentle Elvish music plays everyone in, and at the front of stands an arbor covered in wisteria.  It's a remarkably peaceful setting, enough to dispel further some of the grimness of the past few days and create an atmosphere of smiles and warmth.    It seems to reinforce what Luthir has been telling Vi all along: that maybe now more than ever, this is the sort of thing they need, in order to remember what they're all fighting for.

He and I had bumped into each other the night before - that's when he invited me out to meet you all.

[ he grins to himself and chuckles a bit ] I sort of roped him into a poker game that night. With some interesting stakes.

[slay]

[ that earns a laugh from her as well—a genuine one, albeit weak. ]

Okay, if this story ends in strip poker, I really don't need to hear it.

[fornicator]

Mum's the word, then. [ :) ]

[slay]

[ that only makes her laugh harder. she sits back in her seat, nodding. ]

Wow. You ... really are his type.

[ because his level of audacity is so damn reminiscent of jade. she smiles fondly at him for it and turns to rest her arm on the back of her chair, folding her legs towards him. ]

Okay. Interrogation almost over—promise. Just ... how'd you guys meet? I mean, how long have you known each other?

[fornicator]

Ohhh, we go way back. [ he tilts his head almost upside down to look behind him before leaning forward again, content that no one's eavesdropping. ] Centuries back, actually.

There's gambling in that story too, although it might be of a less unsavory nature in terms of mental pictures for you.

[slay]

As long as it doesn't involve any Descant-centric nudity, I think I can handle a little gambling. [ dude he's like her brother she just really doesn't want that mental image. she's saying nothing about zarad nudity tho tbh. ]

[fornicator]

He used to run poker games with bootleggers down in New Orleans. Not that I was one of those, but I've always appreciated a good game. [ he takes another drink, tipping his head back and forth thoughtfully ] I wouldn't exactly call our early encounters much of a budding love story, though.

Some things creep up on you over time.

Do you have a business other than gambling?

[ she laughs as she says it, eyebrows arched, but she's also kinda like hey how are you going to support a family with my bro ok. ]

[fornicator]

I made it into my business.

I run the biggest circuit there is, back in New York. That's why it's hard for me to get away for long. That kind of thing requires a lot of... supervision.

[slay]

[ open mouth insert foot. ]

You're ... [ buffy raises one hand to brush at the hair at the back of her neck, smile freezing into an awkward position. ] ... really a professional gambler?

[fornicator]

[ he looks amused as hell at her reaction, rly. ]

I take it Des doesn't talk much about his days before the detective shtick?

[slay]

Des doesn't like to talk about anything worth anything if he can help it. I'm sure you know that. [ and yet he never shuts up ... ]

[fornicator]

Not unless he's backed in a corner.

You'll have to ask him about it some time. You didn't hear it from me.

[slay]

Uh-huh, and who else would I have heard it from?

[fornicator]

Fair point. Fine: permission to throw me under the bus granted.

[slay]

[ laughter bubbles out of her throat at that and she considers him fondly for a moment. she appears to make a private decision before she answers, conversationally. ]

Good, because I sure don't know anyone else who remembers that far back.

[fornicator]

It's a blessing and a curse. [ but he's still smiling. ] So. What's your story?

[slay]

[ she shrugs, staring down into her glass. ]

Wish I knew.

[ BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR, GURL. ]

Memories are a luxury that not all of us have.

[fornicator]

Veil, huh? How long?

[slay]

About three years ago.

[ she tightens her smile, tilting her head. ]

I don't remember anything before that. On the other hand, I'm always learning new things about myself.

[fornicator]

[ he examines her with interest, a curious light in his eyes as he asks: ] And what would you say has been your most interesting find so far, Buffy?

[slay]

Oh, I'm ... really not that interesting.

[ she laughs it off awkwardly. ]

[fornicator]

Des seems to think differently.

[slay]

Maybe. [ she takes a sip of her drink and then sets it down, pushing it away. ] You really go for the personal questions, don't you?

[fornicator]

You don't have to answer if you don't want. I'd rather not kill the conversation.
