The "afterparty" is rumored to be the real main event of the night. A black-tie affair in the lavish, opulent ballroom, it is every new Knight's chance to mingle and meet some of their new brothers in arms. Of course, a couple hours are provided following the ceremony for everyone to change, do hair and makeup, and choose from the vast array of formal attire in the closets of the balcony "dressing rooms" located at the top of spiraled staircases on either side of the ballroom. A separate dressing room exists for men and women, and they include full bathrooms (with, thankfully, very modern plumbing).

The squires are usually among the last to arrive, and the ballroom is full to the brim with a fancy array of people, of all shapes, sizes and species.

Hope you aren't shy. They're all here to meet you.

Feel free to make your own open threads for people to come congratulate your newly pledged knight.

ooc; also if your Knight wants to get all gussied up, you can make a Disguise (Cha) check for how good they were at hair/makeup/stylin', etc! This goes for... any time.

That's the idea.

[ she arches an eyebrow at helen, but that's the only acknowledgment she makes of this new side to her. lydia looks back out at the dance floor. ]

Is there a reason no one's happy to be at a welcome party, or are this many knights really that British?

Unfortunately, there was an incident just a few days ago. A few of our own had been captured without our knowledge, replaced with something known as a doppelganger. A knight still remains in captivity, but their rescue must be perfectly executed. We've all been on edge ever since all this came to light.

[ ahhh that puts some more context to the conversation she'd overheard earlier. ]

This wouldn't have anything to do with an invasion of the Andres Isle, would it?

[Helen is entirely unsurprised that Lydia has already found this much out. She might even have a bit of pride lingering behind her somber nod.]

It is, in fact. Unfortunate that your squiring be tainted with the heaviness of such news, but perhaps it's better to know the dangers of our work upfront.

The first thing I saw on this side of the Veil was a pile of dead bodies. I think I'm well-acquainted with the dangers.

Even so- I always hope to ease my squires into all this. I'm sure you can imagine how often that works out.

If I had to take a guess? South of Never.

Something like that. It's not usually quite so much like throwing you into the deep end, but if I had any doubt that you were more than capable, I wouldn't have brought you back with us in the first place. I can only hope you haven't come to regret the choice.

Where else would I have gone?

[ she shrugs simply, then glances down into her champagne flute like it's suddenly the most interesting thing in the room. ]

[Helen's face falls slightly, looking concerned.]

It's easy to forget sometimes just how young you are. None of us are happy to hear that someone has been pulled away from their family, but I can promise that I'll be my best to make the transition into this organization as smooth as possible. You'll do very well here, Lydia. I'm quite sure of that. But you're allowed to be shaken by it. This is all a big step. No one expects you to face it unfazed.

[immuno]

I'm not shaken.

[ she snaps to defensive. ]

I'm practical. If I didn't come back here with you, I'd have wound up broke in some group home full of drug pushers. I wouldn't be here if I couldn't handle it, or if I didn't believe I'd do well. [ she squares her shoulders, straightening. ] I'm fine.

[daredtobelieve]

You're not. [She says it gently, not really so much of a disagreement as a fact that she feels needs to be understood.] But you will be. Very soon, I'd imagine. And I'll be here to help in any way that I can.

[immuno]

That's funny. I didn't realize my emotional state was subject to a vote. [ shut dowwwwwnnnn. lydia's reply comes with bland disinterest. ]

[daredtobelieve]

Lydia. [There's just enough mom in her tone that it's definitely on purpose.] Whether you believe it or not, I do have your best interests at heart. I've been at this a very long time. I've seen young, bright, practical people crack under the weight of it because they couldn't accept that they could take a moment to not be fine.

[immuno]

[ she tilts her head, eyebrows arching. ]

Fascinating.

[ and irrelevant. lydia is not those people. she has been accused of cracking under weight before, scorned as the town nutjob. she's not letting that happen again, and she's not letting helen's insinuation that it just might if she doesn't ~listen~ and do what she's told affect her decision to remain carefully composed. ]

[daredtobelieve]

[She sighs.]

I'm only asking that you think about it and take care of yourself. You may be the exception to the rule, but I'd rather be cautious than ignore my instincts.

... Okay!

[ omg what is it gonna take to get her to let it go. ]

Fine. I'll be careful. Does that sufficiently quell your raging maternal instinct?

For now. [She's not even a little put off by the attitude. She's seen worse, gurl. In fact, she's smiling.]
