In less than twenty-four hours, everything has turned on its head.

A Knight and her allies were kidnapped by Iscariot agents for execution in Rome, barely escaping with their lives.

A mission meant to free one Knight from the influence of a dark god succeeded - at the price of another's life.

A simple recon mission at a Keijen Blade concert nearly led to two Knights committing mind-controlled suicide in front of an eager crowd.

Several Knights went to see Draken Crombe, leader of the Church of the Lord's Humanity, speak in person, and learned just how sinister his religion's dogma is.

A call from Sir Hathaway alerted Wynn to the escape of the doppelganger from the Knight's dungeons, an escape perhaps aided by Elena Gilbert.

A demigod interrupted what might have been a simple smash and grab retrieval of an artifact.

And most horrific of all, in the middle of the night, hundreds of Shadowkind in New York City awoke, and walked in a mindless trance down to the Hudson River to drown themselves. Only the quick thinking and combined efforts of the Knights present and their allies prevented all of them from succeeding.

Beset on all sides, a dark time awaits for the Knighthood - who were already suffering from the capture of Dragon's Claw Sir Thomas Bancroft at the hands of their long time enemy Dimitris Sarandis of Andres Isle.

In times such as these, the light can be difficult to find. Hope itself seems somewhere just out of reach.

Nice to meet you, Myri. [ Kate smiles back, a little subdued given the general mood of the plane, but friendly. ] Thank you. I gather it's not a very good time around here, but I guess that's why you're recruiting.

[witchwoman]

It's not a good time. It rarely is, but there's always time to at least say hello and welcome. I just hope you won't judge us too harshly by this behavior.

[alsohawkeye]

[ There's a part of Kate that wants to say 'if it's never a good time then maybe you guys should be used to handling bad ones without turning into jerks' but she's only been here for a couple hours and was asleep for half of that and now Myri's being nice so she doesn't really have anything to complain about. Stop being a jerk, part-of-Kate.

She smiles. ] No, not at all. Nothing the free flight can't balance out. Have you been part of the knights for long?

[witchwoman]

A few years now. It feels like yesterday and forever all at once, somehow.

[alsohawkeye]

Can I ask what you did before you joined?

[witchwoman]

Much the same as what I do now. I was a healer. A witchwoman by trade.

[alsohawkeye]

From the Shadow world? [ Is a pretty safe bet when people are using the word witch so it's a semi-rhetorical question. She nods even as she asks it and adds another instead. ] How did you end up with the Knights?

[witchwoman]

One of them, yes.

[Her next question makes Myri pause a bit.] Before I ever came to this place, I had voices that guided me. They told me to travel East. And I did. That brought me through the Veil and while the voices stopped, I continued to travel East. The knights found me on those travels and brought me in. It was some time later that I realized this place was where I was meant to be, that the voices were guiding me home.

[alsohawkeye]

[ It's all a little mystical for Kate's usual scene, but she listens with both interest and respect, and at the last her mouth curves up at one corner. ] That sounds like a relief. And like a more welcoming sort of organization than I'd imagined.

[witchwoman]

Oh, they're very welcoming. Things have been...trying lately. So you may not find as many smiling faces. But that's nothing to do with you.

[alsohawkeye]

Oh, I understand about the timing, I promise I'm not holding that against anyone. It wasn't that so much as just...this sort of organization. The sort I'm familiar with are generally more like a cross between the military and the CIA. A job, not a home.

[witchwoman]

I think it's different for everyone. But I've come to think of several of the knights as my family. And I know that Wynn considers us as much. [Not just a boss, okay.] What was it that drew your interest to the organization?

[alsohawkeye]

Interesting. I'm certainly curious to meet him. [ Her smile is a little vague, but polite. As for herself, one shoulder is briefly lifted in a shrug. ] From the little I've been told so far it sounds a lot like what I did at home. Large-scale world-saving, plus smaller scale crime- and evil-prevention sort of stuff in between the universal threats.

[witchwoman]

[Myri nods.] From what I've heard, some missions are very brief. I've only been on this one, but it's lasted something close to two years.
