[Like Gar and Spike, Martha's hanging out with some books, too. In her case, it's some books on Shadowkind and their role in this world, as well as a few basic books on magic and how they work. She's got a notebook, too, and she occasionally writes things down to try and help her keep things straight. She's such a huge nerd, guys.]

[witchwoman]

[Eventually, Myrilandel pries herself away from the windows and gets up to move around. She spots Martha with her nose in her books and steps closer.]

Have you learned much?

[Martha looks up from her books and smiles at Myri.] I'm still trying to understand the basics of magic and...things like that. We don't have any magic where I come from, just technology - it's rather like this world, only different.

[witchwoman]

If it helps, I barely understands the basics of it myself.

[aproperdoctor]

But you use magic, right? They said you healed Arthur when he was injured.

[witchwoman]

Having the ability to do something doesn't make you an expert. I was born with magic within me, and raised by a woman who could also heal others. But she was taken from me when I was very young. There's still a great deal that I do not know.

[aproperdoctor]

Oh, I didn't mean to imply that! Just that...I mean, I figured that since you're from a world with magic, you're more likely to know more about it than I am. [She gives a shrug that's somewhere between apologetic and a little self-deprecating.]

[witchwoman]

I just worry that everyone has put too much stock in what happened. Not many people bring up the fact that I nearly lost consciousness right there beside him in doing what I did.

[aproperdoctor]

[Martha nods, thinking about this.] So is it possible that you could only heal a wound partway? Like, enough to keep it from being life-threatening, but then...conserve some of your own energy? Or if you had more than one injured person to tend to and you couldn't heal all of them completely?

[witchwoman]

[She takes a seat nearby and tries to think of how to explain it.] My gift comes more as a... compulsion. I can feel the wounds or sickness within a person and feel an overwhelming urge to right the body's wrong.

Unfortunately, I rarely have the sense of mind to stop once I begin. Even if continuing is detrimental to my own well being.

[Martha wrinkles her nose at that; it sounds rather uncomfortable, to say the least. On the other hand, it also makes her feel a bit less useless, since it's obvious that Myri won't be able to heal everything.] That is a bit inconvenient, yeah. Maybe the Knights'll have someone who understands how it works so that you can learn how to control it better, though?

[witchwoman]

It's possible. They seem to have a great many people here who know a fair amount about magic. It's wonderful.

[aproperdoctor]

Gar gave me some books about magic theory - I have to admit, I don't understand half of what any of it means, but it's pretty brilliant. You're welcome to borrow a couple, if you'd like. I have way too many; she gave me a reading list when I just asked her for a few books to help me learn more about this world.

[witchwoman]

[Myri pauses, looking incredibly confused, as if she's just realized something.]

You said you don't know much about magic?

But then who taught you to read?

[rationalizes]

[Dis is why Gar loves you, Marfa. She'll smile down at her as she makes her way back up to her seat after having a chat with Kat.]

If you have any questions on Shadowkind, don't hesitate to ask.

[Martha is clearly the best squire. Sort of.]

Questions that don't involve the logistics of dragons mating with humans, you mean?

[She smirks, amused. Look, Gar being flustered was kind of hilarious.]

[rationalizes]

Well... preferably... [she trails off weakly] Though I can understand how one might be curious, as it certainly seems... unusual. [Wait, no, that came out all wrong]

... But yes, other questions.

[aproperdoctor]

[There's that brief moment where Martha thinks about telling Gar that she'll find a dragon and discover how unusual it is first-hand if she's curious, but she's not Dumage not...really going to do that, and Gar has no sense of humour.] Are there many corporations and organisations that are fronts for things like the Hoffman Institute, then? And are they run by Shadowkind?

[rationalizes]

[She has a sense of humor. It's just a ... really old-fashioned one...] Oh, yes, a great deal of them. While Shadowkind are accepted in many societies, they're also almost universally discriminated against on some level. It's quite common for some Shadowkind to attempt to hide their heritage, or for groups that support Shadow goals to disguise the fact.

Even our own organization operates behind the facade of a research institute.

Right, that explains the credit cards. What're Shadow goals? Obviously some of them are, you know, taking over the world, killing all humans, things like that, but do some of them work towards the greater good? More acceptance within the existing society, rights for the Shadowkind, et cetera?

[rationalizes]

Both, actually. There are just as many different groups representing "Shadow interests" as there are... the interests of anyone. Some of them want equality, some of them want to help educate people of this world about their people, others have much more sinister desires.

[aproperdoctor]

Like the Hoffman Institute. Though - are they run by Shadowkind or humans? Or both?

[rationalizes]

The organization seems to employ mostly humans - and its founders were both human as well, as far as we're aware.

[aproperdoctor]

So what are their goals?

[rationalizes]

Ostensibly? Alternative energy resource, but that's hardly their primary concern. They collect artifacts of a Shadow nature and study them. They claim that research is their motivation, but we have no way of knowing if there isn't another reason.
