[Des observes this process with a blank stare, hands in his pockets, as he shrugs off her concerns about the Winchesters. They were a waffle intro to his real point, anyway.

...And down goes the bag. He follows its descent to the ground with a slow blink.] Those are never good words strung together like that. "I wanted to talk to you" and "Spike got me thinking." [He gives an exaggerated shudder.]

I know. I've been thinking about that, too.

[ Which means she factored in!!! That a Spike idea might be a bad one before deciding to go through with it all the same. Adulthood. ]

And it gets worse as I mention it's about Rafael. Not the most reliable narrator, I'll grant you.

[ She tilts her head to the side, dropping her hands and clapping them against her thighs. Decisive, she goes to pick the heavy bag back up, foisting the hundred plus pounds up easily and carrying it back to where she can hang it back up with a new carabiner. ]

He thinks I should get the story from him, too. Face to face.

Well, that's not a bad idea. I've been sorta gunnin' for it. [He sticks his tongue in his cheek as he watches. Sometimes, Buffy... You really terrify him with your crazy buffalo strength.] Most of his concerts are sold out. I called in a favor.

[He pauses for a second.] Did you know his fan club president is a Knight?

Seriously?

[ That's mostly alarming because this person never spoke up after their extended Chicago stay. Then again, if she were in someone's fan club and found out they were a real person and got up close and personal, she'd … probably be awkward and reserved about that, too.

After all, Rafael's stays at the castle were never long. ]

Handy, I guess. So you got tickets?

She's trying. If she doesn't pull through, I'm willing to risk the jailtime to try and see if we can catch him somewhere, but I was trying less extreme methods first.

[he idly wanders over to a rack of practice polearms and picks one up experimentally.] So either way, I'm talkin' to the bastard, but I did tell Alainn to get two tickets if she could. [he grins at her.] I figured you'd change your mind.

[ Have an unladylike snort. ]

Didn't anyone ever tell you that smug is unbecoming?

[ She clips the bag up again, dusting her hands off and looking Des over like wow don't put your eye out with that. ]

I've been told that smug is a really good look on me, actually. [HE IS GONNA PUT HIS EYE OUT. He's not really doing anything but looking it over, and it's not really evident if he's doing it because he's bored or because he's actually taken an interest in melee combat.] I'm shocked you got this advice from Spike, of all people. He's never been Rafael's biggest fan.

He's still not. But …

[ Her hands still on the bag, trying to keep it from swinging wildly as it settles. The expression on her face crosses from reluctant to touched to slightly guilty. ]

He gets the feeling.

[ Which she doesn't mean to sound like an accusation about Des not getting the feeling, but ... it does. ]

[Des is just gonna awkwardly stare at his stick now. The non-genitalia stick.] Yeah, I can see where he'd definitely grasp the concept a little better. Good to know he's found a way to put that to good use.

[Helen, Spike, Buffy, and Isabella can form a club. It'll be the most awkward club ever. Except Des is pretty sure Buffy isn't suffering from unrequited love. It's a bad case of RAFAEL GIOVANNI IS A DIPSTICK.] And it's better than trying to move on without knowing and hoping Rafael doesn't wander back into your life like an Italian soap opera cliche.

[ Something about the way she carries herself is despondent and resigned. Like she doesn't necessarily expect anything to come of the concert to change what's going on, but she's already settled on her outlook. Which she decides to share, for a change, offering a sad smile to Des as she acknowledges, ] I'd never hope that.

[ Even if she's right, even if he doesn't want anything to do with her, and he's trying to get away from this life, she'd still hope that he wandered back in. She'd never give up hoping that he'd return, even if she were able to move on. When she told him that her heart would be with him, not with her on Andres, she wasn't talking a temporary loan. ]

Yeah. I know how that goes. [He taps the polearm into the ground and leans on it, an oddly wistful expression on his face.] Some people are worth waiting for, even if it takes awhile. Or forever. And Rafael ain't the sharpest tool in the shed most days.

You say that, but ... If he really is trying to get out? He's smarter than all of us. Even you changed your mind about trying to do that.

[Des's expression goes grim and he presses his forehead to the wood.] I would've never been out. It would've been the same shit with different methods. I don't quit until this clusterfuck is finished.

[he leaves the "and then I'm out" unspoken. It doesn't matter anymore. They could be on this case for the rest of time for all they know.] But say you're right and he did get out, I'm still waiting for the heartfelt note. You know that's more his style. Rafael Giovanni doesn't just leave. He'd be doing to you what he let Jade do to him. And given how he is, d'you think he could've put you through that pain?

If it was the only way he could bear to do it?

[ She arches her eyebrows like hmmm food for thought. Then tilts her head, relenting. It sounds pompous, out loud, to say she's so difficult to walk away from that he can't even say goodbye properly. A sigh tumbles past her lips, and she walks over to take the polearm from Des. ]

Whatever it is that's keeping him away, it's not good. I prefer the version of not good where he's okay, even if it means ... the worst for any "us" there could have been.

[Des releases the weapon as she takes it from him, frowning deeply, and lets his hands fall to his sides. That lasts for a second because now he's free to gesticulate.] I'd say he's probably safer, but safe is so relative around anyone connected to this shit. And he's got the same enemies we do... Plus his own.

[AT LEAST HE'S NOT ACTIVELY SUICIDAL ANYMORE???] Either way, there's no harm in asking. You find out what you already assumed or it turns out better than expected.

Des, don't get the wrong idea about this. I'm not expecting to ... [ Her lips purse together, unable to formulate the end of that sentence. She tries another angle. ] The only reason I want to see him is so that I can make sure he's okay.

And not mind-controlled or otherwise fucked up. I know. I get it. [You're busting his balls here, Blondie.] A lot of shit could be going on under the surface, and they're expecting people to see what they wanna see.

[ Well, better not beat the dead horse, then. They both know what page the other is on. Even if it's not precisely the same one. ]

So any idea when these tickets of Alainn's will be for?

Probably something in December, ideally. Like I said, she can't promise a miracle and we might get nothing, but we can spend the holidays breaking into a concert hall. I don't want to deal with concert security, but if we can escape Iscariot agents, then this should be a cakewalk.

I don't know. If I had to choose between fighting Iscariot agents, and sneaking past Isabella ...

[ That lady is fucking terrifying ok. But Buffy's pretty obviously kidding because there has not been a single moment when she's considered letting Isa keep her from caring about Rafael ok. ]

[scofff] I can handle Isabella. [he probably can't.]

Really? 'Cause you do a pretty good impression of the opposite of that.

Excuse you. Isa and I have an understanding in that we are both ornery people with... [he waves his hand vaguely.] ...hidden depths.

I'm gonna stop this conversation right there because the last thing I need to hear about is either of you exploring each other's hidden depths.
