[ he does indeed tip her hand up to his lips, and he brushes a kiss behind her knuckles without looking away. his rather penetrating gaze is enough to send a hot jolt through anybody when coupled with the contact. congrats on the room feeling tangibly warmer. ] Well, he neglected to mention how ravishing you are, so there's one strike against his reliability.

[A flush colors her cheeks, deep red visible in the dim bar lighting. Her mouth opens as if to speak, but uh- that ain't happening right away.]

[Des tries not to snort.] I would've used shameless, but I guess kind works.

[ he gently drops helen's hand and claps his onto des' shoulder ] I hope I'm not interrupting a private celebration. Is there room for one more?

No! We're not- That is, it's just a.. [Helen rarely stumbles with her words. Recovering is not something she's had to practice often.]

If you'd prefer that I leave, I could always... [She glances over her shoulder towards the door. This is really awkward for her right now. She's now intensely attracted to both of them?? Hard Helen Magnus life.]

Stay. [Des waves her off, still grinning like a dope.] There's always room for one more. [To Zarad, he says.] We were just having a few drinks. Pre-gaming before actually attempting to celebrate... This. [He gestures to himself with his free hand.]

Well, I suppose that means I should start catching up. [ he slides onto a stool beside des, waving at the bartender to put in a drink order ] And Des is right. The more, the merrier.

Well... [She takes a deeper breath and tells herself to get it together.]

I'm lagging behind as well. Better make it two of whatever it is we're drinking tonight. So long as it isn't that god awful well whiskey I drank with my squire...

Obviously, your squire has no taste. It's aged scotch or bust in these parts. [he waves the bartender over for another since his is almost gone.]

Only the finest, considering the occasion.

Thank God for that. [She says with a laugh.]

Yes, nothing else seems suitable to drink for such an event.

[She can only hope she doesn't get hammere and make more bad life choices tonight.]

You only turn 3977 once. [muttered under his breath as he finishes off the drink he has while the bartender preps his other one] Or 37, if we're really counting. It's all fucking numbers.

[he spares a glance at zarad and nudges him with his shoulder lightly. just 'cause.]

And yet you're the one who still kept track of them. [ he gives him a teasing look, and then slides his hand up over his shoulder to rest there with a squeeze. ]

[Aggressively tries not to feel like she's hanging out on their date or something.]

I, for one, am just glad to not be the oldest person in the room.

[Des reaches over to squeeze her shoulder.] I was a different person when I was counting. Now it's just habitual. And as for you... [he turns to smirk at Helen.] Age and wisdom aside, you're still smarter than me.

[ and their drinks arrive, prompting zarad to pick his up and glance over des' head at helen ] Des says you're something of a scientist. Any interesting experiments lined up at the moment?

Mostly picking back up where I left off before we set our sights on Andres. There are a few members of the organization who have abilities that I can help them explore. I may focus on that for now.

[One of those being everyone's favorite doppelgänger.]

D'you get a lot of those in the castle? People beyond the norm in a world that's already beyond the norm?

[he takes a swig of his fresh whiskey. considering he was one such person, it's hard to doubt his genuine curiousity. he glances over at zarad.] Unless that's strictly business, but he usually has better things to do with his mouth than spillin' secrets.

[yes des. give helen naughty thoughts. someone is a horrible influence on you.]

Guilty as charged. [ he smirks wickedly against the lip of his glass. ] And besides, discretion is one of my other talents.

While I have no doubt you're both quite capable of keeping a secret, I do try to respect a makeshift doctor-patient confidentiality, at least with those who come to me, wishing for that discretion. [She leans forward, taking her glass in one hand, letting her thumb run along the rim.]

People fall through the Veil every day, not knowing who they are or where they came from, let alone what sort of magic or abilities they possess. In my other life, I tracked beings we called Abnormals- creatures and people who fell outside of the genetic norm. Both here and there, my aim remains dual purpose: To study the miraculous and to protect against the perilous. So if your question is if I've found something to keep my interest, the answer is and will always be yes.

[And with that little monologue over, she'll just take a sip of her drink.]

The miraculous and the perilous. Kinda has a nice ring to it.... if you can tell them apart. Considering how many people assume some miracles are perilous, themselves.

I imagine that after spending so much time in such a line of work, she's only too familiar with the unfortunate predilection people have to fear whatever they don't understand.

Precisely the reason my father began the research in the first place. [Such a daddy's girl, tbh.] It's harder now, working in secret like we do. Before, I had an entire network of facilities- the global Sanctuary network. In many ways, it wasn't that unlike Wynn's job. Perhaps that's why I'm in no hurry to take it from him.

[She stifles a small laugh as she takes another drink.]

But what about you, Zarad? I'm afraid I'm at an incredible disadvantage. I know little more of you than your name and your connection to the birthday boy, here.
