[ she smiles though, so it seems the shock of seeing matt has worn off and she's instinctively falling into the fondness that comes with familiarity. ]

[ It's great to see her, really. Fantastic. But he's never really been very good at expressing feelings. Especially to the girl who used to -lovingly- kick him in the balls. Funny how now she's probably the one person he would talk to. ]

[ she tosses her long hair dramatically, but her smile widens and it's obvious she still holds matt in a station of serious affection. she's still a bit of a sad panda bear that they haven't spoken in so long, but shit happens. she'll get over it. ]

[ With a touch of a laugh, he moves to sit down on a nearby bench. He watches her for a second and then gives her a well then look. ]

You gonna come over here or leave me sitting around like a lemon?

Uh, I might leave you sitting around actually. [ at least for a few more moments. ]

Well I'll just sit here watching you. Might whip it out and have a go while I'm at it.

[ No, no he really won't. She was practically like his sister for years, he most definitely doesn't want to do that. ]

Oh, that's just gross. [ she makes such a disgusted face. but gets up and moves over to him, sitting primly next to him. ] Seriously, very gross.

[ It makes him laugh, and he nudges her a bit by the shoulder as she sits. He's really missed her, really missed this. Even if its been years. ]

So you going to catch me up on everything I've missed with you then or what?

Not much really happened. I came up here after school, Mum and Da were knights, so's Finn, obviously. [ ella would have forced them to say hello to each other by now, her big imposing brother who looks nothing like her with his brown hair and green eyes. ] I was a squire while I went to Uni, back home. Then when I graduated I came here full time.

[ she face falls a little, lips pressing together to give herself a bit of time to gather herself. ] Mum and Da passed 'bout a year and a half back.

[ her parents had been old when they'd found infant ella and toddler finn and taken them in, but she still feels too young to have lost both her parents. ]

[ He looks a bit stricken at that. He had no idea, but then his family don't really keep him up on what's going on at home, even with the people they do get on with, forget the ones they don't. ]

Fuck I'm sorry, El.

[ His arm reaches out and pulls her up against him. Tough shit, she's getting hugged. ]

I had no idea.

Y'don't need to apologize. [ because it feels like an apology. she allows herself to be comforted though, which is rare for her, but matt was such a staple of her childhood, it just comes natural. ] It was a wee funeral, just me and Finn and Da and then just me and Finn. The mangy cat that lived in the back garden. Pretty sure it's immortal by now or it's really got nine lives because the beast's been alive since before I was even born.

[ It makes him realise just how cut off from his entire life at home he'd become for so many reasons. ]

Suppose you didn't hear what happened with me then? [ He ventures that a little, but sort of nervously too. ]

Not really? Mum said you went away to college. Not much of a surprise considering... [ considering his dad. :| ella bristles just thinking of the man, lips pressing into a line. ]

[ He gives a bit of a nod towards her. She's one of the very few people that knew what went on, never wanting to tell people the truth. ]

Yeah. Yeah got my degree... [ there's clearly something else there. He doesn't talk about what happened, but he sort of feels like she should know. ]

[ she's rubbish at sense motive, but she can tell there was something unsaid (17) and she looks at him expectantly. ]

You seriously didn't hear anything? About Nate? About what I did?

[ He thought this would have been gossip. Kind of glad to find maybe it wasn't. Or maybe it's just that his family wanted to disown him so much they'd rather not mention it at all. ]

No...? [ but now she is concernicus. ] Mum said you had trouble in school, but I thought it was just so I wouldn't feel like a dunce when I failed one of my classes. I didn't think it was real trouble.

[ if ella's mum knew she wouldn't have told ella or finn, out of some fear that it would cloud their judgement of him before he could properly explain, if ever that came up. she always thought the best in people, whereas ella thought the worst in order to be happily surprised when they didn't turn out to be trash. ]

Who's Nate? What did you do?

[ He feels like maybe he's said too much. Probably better if she doesn't know, right? That way she can't hate him like the rest of his family. Judge him for anything he's done. But then at the same time he's not really been able to talk about it, not with anyone. Well, anybody except the police. ]

He was my flatmate. My best mate. We met at uni. [ he looks about, a bit shifty eyed ]

Long story short [ and missing most of the important detail, it seems ] I put him in hospital. I fucked him up, El.

[ ella listens with rapt attention and while she can't hide that she's shocked, judgement never makes it on to her face. she's not a gentle person. anastacia spent most of her squiring trying to coax the tiny moments out of her. ella is violent and rough and has zero fuse on her temper.

[ surprise wars with the concern but she nods automatically, ignoring the tears because that is how she copes with feelings. what feelings where? ]

I'm not fucking queer, El. [ his voice is quick and angry and he regrets it straight away. he still isn't doing well with the whole thing, least of all because he's not really had anybody to talk to about it. ]

[ her eyebrows lift, as if to say "the lady doth protest too much, methinks", but she doesn't say anything to the contrary. ]

You know Finn's gay, yeah? Not like Elton, he's not gay as a picnic basket, but he's proper gay. Shags blokes, as one does. Sort of monk, actually, so the shagging might not really happen. But it could, if he weren't such a loser.

[ her head tips, thoughtful. ] You're straight and that's fine, but it's not like I'm not used to it, 's what I'm saying. [ so he can be honest with her, even if he can't be honest with himself. or finn. she will pimp out her brother for talking to. ]

[ Of course more than anybody, she likely would. Of course he's terrified of even the idea of being gay. If his dad found out he'd probably kill him. He was brought up to be, by all intents and purposes, homophobic. It wasn't until he moved away he started having all of those beliefs challenged. ]

[ her forehead wrinkles. it's not like she and finn were raised catholic, or even religious. her parents were from the shadow world, they didn't give a shit about... pretty much anything. if it wasn't hurting anyone, what was the harm?

ella managed to miss the "if it's not hurting anyone" part most of the time, since she takes glee in hurting bad guys. BUT THE UPBRINGING STAYED THE SAME and so ella is genuinely confused by the idea of homophobia. she likely was as a child too, but never really recognized it, raised in a bubble of tolerance. ]
