I don't doubt for a second that Hell isn't a scary, awful, messed up place, alright? It's Hell. But you don't honestly think someone who is half-human is their MVP, do you?

[She's got at least nine archdevils ahead of her on the powerful scale, alright. At least, he'd assume that, anyway.]

How much do you know about Hell, exactly?

Azrael. Or ... Mephistopheles, whatever she's calling herself these days, and the others. I know. But if I had to guess, I'd say Big Bad's baby girl is probably stiff competition on principle.

On principle of what? Being something she didn't choose to be? Or did you forget that I have Lucifer's blood in me, too?

[He might be projecting. Just a little bit. Whoops.]

And she goes by both. One's her angelic name, the other's demonic. [A beat. Wisdom 17.] Why mention her out of all of them, though? Because honestly if you're looking for the big bad of Hell, it's probably not even Lucifer.

You realize I didn't know who she was until she was already here, right? [Even if he hasn't asked her to leave, yet.] And from where I'm standing, she's been more honest with me than pretty much anyone else who's been involved.

[This sure devolved in a hurry.]

I would just really like it if you'd stop throwing around assumptions, especially when you've apparently been chatting up an archdevil yourself. [He looks suddenly very, very tired.] She's not staying. She can't, if I'm going to work things out with my brother.

This may not sit well with the apparently hereditary Winchester ego, but it didn't have anything to do with you. I told you about Michael because you're my friend, not because I owed it to you. If I don't tell you something, it's because it's not mine to tell.

[ Azrael is Des' problem—and Buffy will happily throw herself into that mess any time the bitch comes around, fight to keep her far, far away, but she won't pretend that it's hers to share. That's the whole point. ]

I met her because I was trying to keep my best friend out of Hell's claws. Now, I'd like to believe I don't have to worry about that with you, but apparently they've been sending agents to knock down your door too.

You didn't tell me about Michael. Dean did.

[Technically. Which he wasn't going to hold against her but...there it is.

He drags his hands down his face.]

Buffy, she's not an agent. She doesn't want me caught up in all of that, but she knew that if I didn't know what the heck was going on, I was going to find a way to find out. The more I know, the better I can avoid what happened to me. And she's not wrong.

[He doesn't want to fight with her, but she's slinging shit at him like crazy.]

Lucifer already has a Sam. So does she. She's not expecting me to do anything for her or her father or she'd be dealing for information instead of just giving it to me.

[He has...no idea if that's true. But it's how the Hell he knows works so...?]

And yes, I know there's a chance she's lying. I'm not an idiot. I just can't for the life of me figure out a reason why she would.

[ The really unsettling thing is that Des made the same argument about information that came from Azrael once, and it shows in the way Buffy's eyes widen that something about Sam's "she's not dealing, she's giving" unsettles her. The fact that he's apparently thought it through does something to assuage her, though how much is unclear. She still looks vaguely tense, as if resigning herself to agreement rather than wholeheartedly charging into it. ]

I don't think you're an idiot.

[ Just to be clear. She sighs, feeling a bit guilty for giving an impression that led him to feel obligated to clarify that. ]

I just know that they operate in manipulations. Heaven and Hell work on a balance: they can't always cut deals. It's easier when they can just … nudge people. If a human's making their own choices, uninfluenced … That's what makes Glasya and ideal worker bee. If she's part human, maybe she doesn't count on their cosmic chessboard.

[Sam nods slowly, glad for at least that. And while it's very likely that that's true, he's still not sure that that's what's happening here. No doubt she's used what she has to get what she and her father want at times. He knows there's something big at stake, that time is running out for Heaven, that they're both meddling with the human world because of some really old wager.

Dean's told him a lot.

But that doesn't mean that she's never done something that was in her interest instead of just Hell's. 100% full blooded humans aren't the only things that feel and do things simply because they want to.

Not to mention the fact that 'no one tells her what to do.']

It doesn't matter anyway. Like I said, she can't stay. Fixing things with Dean comes first and they don't exactly get along. [He gives her a wry look.] I know you're shocked.

I'm sorry. I can't imagine how hard that must be for you.

[ She's not sorry that he's doing it, though, which is why she chooses to specify. Her sympathy sounds sincere all the same. ]

But I think you're making the right decision. The further you can put all of this behind you, the better off both of you will be.

[ Which, perhaps, gives insight as to why she didn't share details that weren't Winchester-specific. Dean, at the very least, is trying to get out of it. She'd like to facilitate that, all things considered. ]

[He gives her a sad sort of smile.]

You don't need to be sorry, Buffy. It's a messed up, complicated situation, but the decision itself wasn't that hard.

[He kind of shrugs his shoulders.]

Dean needs me. I can't let him down again.

You weren't the one who let him down the first time, Sam. You can't let yourself carry that.

Maybe not, but he already feels like one brother betrayed him. I won't add myself to that number.

[He's seen how broken Dean is. Sam's not sure he could survive losing him like that again.]

There's one more thing. [His expression changes to one of concern.] It's about Iscariot.

[ Brow furrowing, Buffy tilts her head. Uh oh. He said the I-word. Slowly, she folds her arms across her chest, shoulders hunching a bit in preemptive defense. ]

What about them?

They're the ones that killed Bobby. And Cas.

[He sighs.]

They died because they were coming after me.

[ Oh

shit.

Immediately, her whole expression falls at once. Devastation strikes fast and leaves little light, but she gathers it back up a few moments later, collecting herself, finding determination and stepping forward to reach out for him, resting one hand on his shoulder. ]

Sam, that was not your fault. [ That seems like an important place to start. ] Even the angels have disavowed Iscariot, Sam. They're insane. I wish I could say you were the first person I know to make their hit list.

No, I know, I just--

[He's really trying not to shoulder other!Sam's blame. He's had enough people, including Dean and Glasya, that that lies with him and him only. No one's trying to hold it against him.

That doesn't mean it won't come back to haunt him anyway.]

--I can't promise they won't come after me on principle.

[ She wrestles with something for a moment, as if to debate whether she wants to share something. It's not out of any desire to withhold information from him—rather, it's merely painful to discuss, because the wound still feels raw, even now. But she pushes herself to get the words out because it's a matter of protecting and preparing Sam, and that's more important than her own emotional comfort. ]

If that does happen, there's something you need to know. They have a … a way of stripping your powers. When they grabbed Rafael, Des, and I, they dosed me with something that sapped my strength. If it weren't for Michael, I'd still be powerless. Ordinary.

I'm more worried about other people getting caught in the crossfire, like Bobby and Cas were.

[Sam wouldn't mind if they took his powers away, if he's being honest, but he can tell that she doesn't feel the same way, and has the forethought to keep his mouth shut about it.

He's also not exactly grateful to Michael for giving them back to her, because he has a feeling it wasn't out of the goodness of his heart. Forever biased against Michael because of Dean.

Still, he reaches out, taking her hands in his, giving them a gentle squeeze.]

You could never be ordinary, Buffy. It's not your super strength that makes you special. It's only a very tiny piece of who you are.

[ Pain flickers across her expression, tempered by her appreciation of the empathy he shows. She nods then, squeezing his hands back. Even if he weren't quite as worried about that, he deserved to know what he was facing.

It's not just the risk of losing his powers: it's what their ability to strip them demonstrates about the power Iscariot has. Buffy still isn't sure where her own powers come from (and knowing where Sam's come from, frankly, makes her doubt she wants that answer), and yet Iscariot didn't need to know that to block them. Remove them entirely, even. ]

I really am sorry about Glasya.

[ It doesn't take a genius to notice he has some kind of passion for her, with the way he was talking, even if she's not sure what to make of that. ]

[His responding quiet laughter is a little awkward, because Buffy is clearly assuming things that he hasn't exactly say out loud, but he also...understands why she'd go there.

One, because it was...true. Two, because Buffy knew about the whole intimate with his other self.

He wonders if Dean made these assumptions too, or if his denial was just strong and he didn't want to know/ask/think about it.]

[They both knew this was coming, even if it was mostly unspoken.]

Don't let Dean catch you saying that, though.
