[She chuckles before she spares her any more embarrassment, making another shift, this time into one Miss Buffy Summers (disguise 40).]



[She rolls her shoulders back, cracking a few joints as she does.]

I think I remember speaking to her once before. [When she checked Spike out for a mind control chip.]

Are you feeling any fatigue?

I don't think I'd call it fatigue? My body feels a little sore, maybe? I could keep going, though.

So long as you feel comfortable. [Just going to continue to take notes.]

Her name is Buffy, by the way. She's kind of Des' best friend, so it might be worth remembering.

I'll keep that in mind. [She delicately tucks a piece of hair behind her ear and just... doesn't say anything else about Des or whatever it is that she might have with him that would warrant remembering his friends. Ahem. But when she glances back up and Elena is... Wynn, she can't help but burst into laughter.]

Oh, dear lord...

[And then she waggles her eyebrows, which makes it even more ridiculous.]

Funny story, we did an impromptu pretend squiring for Vi back when we were on assignment for a really long time, and I naturally played Wynn's part. Poor Gar thought he'd actually flown out for the occasion.

[Whoops.]

I think doing a cartwheel and landing on my ass gave it away, though.

You didn't. [She finds all of this terribly amusing, if not a little unsettling to see her boss in this light and know it's actually Elena.]

Oh, I would have paid to see that.

I did.

[And it was gr8.]

Not sure if Wynn would have thought it was quite as funny, but I like to think he'd have a good enough sense of humor to appreciate it.

I think if you caught him on the right day, he'd find it fairly amusing. Things have been a tad stressful still, as I'm sure you can imagine.

Maybe I'll break it out at the party we will inevitably have when our mission is finally over.

[Helen keeps taking notes as Elena changes.]

And you don't feel fatigued at all? You really have made remarkable progress, Elena.

[doubletake]

Not fatigued. I could do this all day, but...it's just kind of disorienting. If that makes any sense.

[She makes a little uncomfortable face before she finally slips back into her usual form, shaking out her limbs.]

But thanks.

[She gives the girl a sympathetic smile and finishes up the notes she was taking on the shifts.]

You were able to pick up on some thoughts, too, weren't you? Has that improved through all of this?

[doubletake]

[She nods.]

It seems to be pretty hit or miss, depending on the person. It's something I kind of...turn on, I guess, and then anything nearby that I can see just kind of filters in if I can get through.

[Her arms cross over her chest.]

People can choose to let me in, too, if they don't fight it. Kyp and I used to have entire conversations silently. It was how he helped me practice.

But I imagine it's only a one way conversation unless the other person also has a telepathic ability?

[She nods.]

Right. I can read whatever's on a person's mind, just on the surface. I'm not what you'd call a telepath.

Still a useful tool to use in the field. A bit morally gray, perhaps, but much of our work is.

No less gray than stealing someone's face and using it to your advantage.

[She doesn't seem bothered by it.]

It's what I'm made for.

[daredtobelieve]

You aren't made for anything, Elena. [Despite the young woman not seeming to mean anything negative by it, the wording causes Helen to pause and shift to make something abundantly clear.] You'll never hear me discourage you from using the gifts you've discovered, but I hope you never feel obligated to use them, or as though your worth is defined by how well you excel at them.

You are more than the sum of your abilities. Wynn recruited you as a knight long before any of us knew of your genetic predisposition. It wasn't an ability to shapeshift or reading minds that convinced him that you could stand with us. It was simply you.

[doubletake]

This is what I'm good at, Helen. Before this, I tagged along and everyone had to make sure poor fragile Elena didn't get hurt.

I don't want to be that person. I want what I do to make a difference. I don't care if the things I have to do are dark or shady or 'morally gray.' I'm not ashamed of that.

I already know I'm worth more than just my ability to change my face. I'm not the one that needs to be convinced of that. But I'm still going to be what I have to be and do what I have to do to get the job done.

[daredtobelieve]

[She keeps quiet, letting Elena have her say and making sure she doesn't interrupt. There's a moment more where she just lets silence pass between them.]

All I want to be sure of is that you're doing this for you. Not because you feel like you need to, not because you built for it, but because this is what you want to do.

[doubletake]

[She chews on the inside of her cheek for a moment, looking like she wants to say something, but it takes time for her to actually spit it out.]

Do you think it's wrong to want to feel powerful?

[daredtobelieve]

Not at all. In fact, I think that's natural. But the trick is to make sure we don't take that desire too far.

I just wish the line was easier to see.
