The morning after, the Knights board a plane at their private airfield, and begin the couple hour flight to the country of Slovechnia.  Wynn has laid out a plan for them as such, leaving Sir Gar in charge of seeing it executed:  they are to send in a few Knights to infiltrate the wedding, while others steal an ambulance from a local hospital.  Using magic to make Sarandis think he's having a heart attack during the ceremony, they will intercept the outgoing call to the paramedics, and pose as them to take him out of there and straight to a private airfield to meet with Wynn.  They're all aware, however, of just how smoothly their plans tend to go where these villains are involved - especially if the Mind Master shows up.  

Either way, it promises to be an interesting day...

I just wish I hadn't had an audience.

[Those people saw this young man open up his head like it was a watermelon. That would leave a mark on their minds, no doubt, and that sat more poorly with her than anything else.]

But it needed to be done. I couldn't leave even the slightest chance that he might do more damage. The less allies they have, the better.

[That didn't mean she particularly felt good about it, but it is what it is.]

Yeah. Crombe's down three people. Three human people, but Sarandis was proof of just how devastating a couple of jackasses with power, privilege, and access to whatever they want can be.

[he winces.] It's worse than that, though. I know it needed to be done, but I can't help but feel like we did Blade a huge solid.

Not to put a damper on our victory- because it is a victory, and what comes after is tomorrow's problem- but still not something I hope anybody's forgetting.

[doubletake]

At least a few of us are being realistic.

[But as he said, she doesn't want to steal anyone's morale, even if she doesn't particularly feel it herself.]

The worst is yet to come. It's the only thing I can really even think about right now. [A beat passes before she said:] They all called me a monster in there. In shouts and whispers. I didn't think it would bother me, but...

[It's still a little different when it's smacking her in the face.]

I'm not preaching suffering today, but realism I've got in spades. Just between you and me, though. [he waves a hand, dismissively.

he turns back to her, frowning.] There's a difference between owning being a monster and being something people fear, Elena. Well. [he swallows.] Something people fear for no good reason. I don't need to tell you that, but...

[he shakes his head.] You know how it goes.

[doubletake]

No. You don't.

[She's not mad about it, though. If anything, she just sounds sad.]

I've just never heard anyone say it like that, with pointed fingers and gasps. I knew it would happen someday, but I thought it would be easier to hear.

[She puts an elbow on her armrest, leaning her head into her hand.]

Then again, it feels like everything always ends up being harder than I thought it was going to be.

[nothingsodivine]

They didn't know.

[He meets her eyes, expression gentle.] But you're right. It's always worse than you expect, even when you're prepared for the worst thing you can think of. [he hesitates for a moment and then lays a hand over hers.] For the record, even if it won't make you feel any better about that, you were amazing today. This wouldn't have worked without you.

[doubletake]

[Those three words seem to sink it and she nods her head, taking a quiet breath that seems to steady her emotions.]

Maybe it would be better if I simply stopped expecting anything. [There's a slightly bitter twinge to the words, but she shakes it off. The hand under his doesn't move for a long moment, though she finally turns it over, slipping her fingers through his.] And thank you.

[Though her tone indicates that she's...pretty aware of that fact.]

I'm well aware of my strengths, at least. I can only hope that, when it comes down to it, they're enough.

[nothingsodivine]

I think anyone who'd argue otherwise at this point is deluding themselves, but self-delusion is a powerful thing. [there's an unmistakable suggestion of bitterness in his tone.]

It is what it is, and what it is right now is exhausting. ["it" being everything. their existence. their lives. this case.]

[doubletake]

Mm.

[She gives his hand a gentle squeeze.]

If only sleep were easier to come by, hm?

[nothingsodivine]

People still sleep? [he squeezes her hand back, smirking a bit.] God, I thought for sure the looming nightmarepocalypse took the fun out of that.

[doubletake]

[She doesn't even try to resist the urge to roll her eyes, but she's grinning all the same, the angst-induced tension breaking.]

It'd be funnier if it weren't an actual possibility.

[nothingsodivine]

At least Blade only waltzed into our dreams once. Any more than that and I would've started charging for it.

[he flinches.] Jesus, that was awhile ago, wasn't it?

[doubletake]

[Her brows furrow at that.]

You could say that.

[She draws her hand away then, pulling it into her lap.]

A lot of things were set into motion for me that night.

[nothingsodivine]

[he blinks steadily as he pulls his own hand into his lap, somehow stricken by the importance of this one event.] Yeah, me too.

He had the audacity to say he could break my curse, if you can believe that.

[doubletake]

Maybe he thought he could, though I doubt he would have come through. He seems egotistical enough to believe he's capable of all sorts of things that aren't necessarily true.

Besides, you didn't need his help.

[nothingsodivine]

I really didn't. [he chuckles.] The irony of it is how fast it broke after that. In hindsight, it feels like it happened just to spite him.

[the laughter he gets from that joke is... more than a little forced.] That's really a small bonus.

[yeah... anyway. he doesn't know where else to go with that, so he just says, with some frustration.] Goddamn, I hate that guy.

[doubletake]

I know. I understand.

[She understands that feeling all too well, and the frustration that comes with it.]

The day will come when we'll deal with him, too, in one way or another.

[nothingsodivine]

And on that day, I swear to God, I hope someone makes him as useless to a woman as a Rabbit without batteries. [at least he can try to force a joke into it.]

[doubletake]

[The corner of her mouth twitches upward.]

I wouldn't count on it.

[nothingsodivine]

Let me dream, Elena.

[doubletake]

[She gives him a look.]

I thought you said you were a realist.

[nothingsodivine]

Realists are allowed to have dreams.

[He gives her a look right back, though it's a bit sheepish, and he ends it quickly, turning back to stare at the ceiling.] I guess you can't get away with skipping the debrief, huh?

[doubletake]

I try to stay away from impossible ones.

[She shakes her head.]

Likely not. I'm not even sure if the others are aware I don't intend to stay in town afterward. I don't know why they'd believe anything's changed, but...

[nothingsodivine]

I think we just learned that some people don't see what's right in front of their face. [he runs a hand through his hair.] Not that we didn't know that, but it seems particularly disheartening right now.

[he's got pretty mixed emotions about some things right now.] Can't shake the feeling that I'm the one who's supposed to feel bad about that one.

[He doesn't. But.]

Decker still didn't even see me as more than an idiot bystander until I started shooting him. I learned that lesson a long time ago.

[But his words still seem to effect her, despite her tone.]

That's the last thing you need to feel bad about and you know it.
