The Knights fly into the port city of Cape Town in the height of summer, which luckily for them is actually a comfortable Mediterranean climate. They have come in search of Le Chien de l’Onyx to return it to it's former (and rightful) owner, the elf mage Nieulor -- it had been stolen from him in eighteenth century France and once Nieulor was freed from the Bastille, he had tracked its whereabouts across the globe trying to retrieve it. Finally, he has found it in Cape Town and the Knights have been asked to meet him for further information at the Blanched Escargot, a hole in the wall French restaurant on the waterfront.

[ thea is going to hold shawn back for a brief moment, at the very least, head tilting. anyone with a listen check of 10+ hears faint music coming from... somewhere. ]

Two against one, Shawn, go slow. [ but she'll give him a nudge and off they go straight. ]

[Shawn rolled terribly, but his senses are sharp enough that it doesn't really matter (listen 17). So he'll hear the music and follow it's lead, inching his way down the corridor and ... possibly humming along to the music he's hearing.

He's really bad at sneaking.]

[ omg shawn please. they get to the end of the tunnel and they can either go left or right, but thea's spot check is high enough to stop them from going left, peering into the dim darkness. it's a grate. cool. ]

[Shawn nods and follows their lead, getting his head back in the game as they get closer (spot 24, listen 25).]

[ shawn hears the music and their own footsteps but he does see that the hall they're in also ends with a steel grate at the end. he also sees that there is another hall that opens up to the right.

also a rat skitters by carrying a piece of pizza crust and when it turns the corner, shawn hears someone's started surprise at pizza rat. ]

The spirits are telling me we must follow the rat!

[And Shawn will dart after pizza rat, his new form of spiritual guidance, and will round the corner right into the voices to see what he happens to find.]

[ he finds... A SMUGGLER WAITING FOR HIM! since the smuggler won 13 vs shawn's 5 init, he throws a punch but wildly misses (atk 6 wtf) ]

[The fact that Shawn managed to dodge the hit was sheer luck on all counts because Shawn is a lot of things, but he is not a fighter of men, unless you count what he learned from Karate Kid.

So he's going to do what he does best, and try and talk his way out of this (diplomacy 33).]

[ this motherfucking fuck crit failed and so shawn's words briefly still him like right, of course, talking. there's a twitchiness about him that speaks to how long he's been standing there alone so maybe he was just started. ]

[ indra rounds the corner finally, having had to catch up to shawn and his rat ] What is going on?

[ thea rounds the corner behind indra and the two women make the smuggler's eyes go wide. ]

HEY!

[ shawn can here the scuff of another person further down the hall and see a foot shifting around, the angle making it clear the person is on the floor, though sitting or laying it unclear.

[Shawn spends his first action holding up his hands and trying to diplomacy again, though he has a feeling it might not go over as well (bluff 25).]

Okay, look. I didn't properly introduce myself. My name is Shawn Spencer aka pizzaratman843, and these are my associates - Windy Cindy aka stormforcerising745 and Jane Kremain aka samurijane823. We maintain the Pizza Rat: World Traveler Instagram account and we are forever searching for the latest in Pizza Rat news updates and info.

[And as he rambles this, he's going to slowly inch towards the scuffling he heard to try and get a look at what's going on around the corner but I believe that will trigger an attack of opportunity!]

[ the guy maybe could have let it go, but his orders are to keep the hall clear so the moment shawn tries to get around him it sure does trigger an attack, swinging his fist out hard right at shawn's face. (atk 21, dmg...3 ok.) ]

[He spins with a bit of a squeak, stunned at the punch because OW HE WAS NOT EXPECTING THAT. But since he didn't try to grab him, Shawn is just going to slip from his grasp (dexterity 20 total) make a break for whatever the guy's trying to hide while shouting back over his shoulder.]

I got the hostage, you guys hold him off!

[ shawn is TOO FAST for the smuggler (ref save 6) but he still whirls to fire off a shot that misses shawn (atk 14), only because shawn's ungainly running bobs and weaves him out of the wave. the bullet embeds itself in the brick wall. ]

[ indra rushes in behind him and attempts to grab the gun from his hand. he gets an attack of opportunity against her 15 Defense, but if he fails - (atk 18) ]

[ the smuggler succeeds (opposed atk 16, dmg 5) and jerks out of indra's grasp.

meanwhile thea rushes forward and, following indra's lead, jabs out with her katana to stab him in the hand so he'll maybe drop the gun. except he beats her too. (atk 22 vs 20 def, dmg 7)

[And Shawn will round the corner, coming upon the hostage and spitting out as he takes in the situation (spot 15).]

I'm Shawn Spencer, I'm here to rescue you.

[Wait, why does that sound familiar?]

[ shawn finds: a man dressed in a filthy business suit and with long blond hair. he looks something like a young middle age, but maybe older, we just don't know. while he’s not injured beyond minor cuts and visible bruises, he is in terrible condition -- dehydrated, weak, and disoriented and currently tied up. he blink up at shawn in confusion.

the smuggler however is busy fighting off the girls and... kind of not succeeding either as he aims at thea and misses entirely even being so close. what an irritating stalemate. (atk 10) ]

[ indra stumbles back from the blow, and moves around to try and flank him with thea, trying again :| if he fails his attack of opportunity... that might make things worse, because she crit failed... ]

[ the smuggler succeeds (atk 17) #blessed, but his distraction gives thea the break away to successfully jab in with her katana (atk 29, crit on 19, dmg 22) and the smuggler crumples, unconscious, almost immediately, leaving thea standing there startled for a moment before she wipes her sword on her jeans. /init ]

Shawn! You okay?

[ at shawn's words the captive murmurs something in french before sliding back into english, heavily accented and raspy: "Thank you." ]
