[ The castle can be a happening place, even on more mundane days. This log is for random interactions over the course of these few months. Because not everyone is into parties, ok. Characters who are not currently squired in may also post, as their characters are living in the castle awaiting their ceremonies. This takes place after the Knights have returned from rescuing Gar in New York City, but before the planned Keijen Blade concert at the beginning of 2017.

You are encouraged to start your own threads and tag around, and feel free to threadjack into any on-going threads that aren't specified as 'closed' in the subject lines since people can enter into rooms even in the middle of what's going on. WE ARE BIG ON THREAD-JACKING HERE. [ it's before greece, luckily, but hawke still needs a drink. she nearly always needs something to distract herself with. a drink, her dog's antics, exploring the castle. though the former option usually comes with the whole missing her friends part. all the same, she does it in part in memory of varric. she could really go for a trip to the hanged man and a drink with him.

so here she is, walking into one of the bars around, for once with her dog at her heels. he'd refused to be left today, so she'd resigned herself to one drink. unfortunately, sebastian decides to head straight for someone else, someone with bright red hair to rival aveline's and make hawke miss her, too. she sighs wearily as her dog sniffs the other woman. ]

Sebastian, leave the poor woman alone. She's not Aveline. [ pause. ] Not that you would know who Aveline is. We're here for a drink. Not social hour.

It's alright.

[ She crouched, smiling for the dog. ]

I've often felt there's too few animals in this place to truly call it a castle, actually.

[ In Tortall, anywhere that didn't smell of horse had certainly seen a cat's paws covering it. While servants and saboteurs could be kept out of certain rooms, Faithful and the rest of the animals were of a different breed. She decided not to share that she was, in truth, more of a cat person. ]

[ sebastian seems to enjoy the attention, standing proudly for it. ]

I suppose your home doesn't see fit to scare off everything that isn't a rat. [ ironically enough. ] I'll also assume your home isn't trying to kill itself every day.

[ one day. one day she'll be a brighter ray of sunshine when talking about thedas.

...okay no, no she won't. thedas is too dark for sunlight. ]

Sebastian could do with a few more companions, though. Say hello.

[ the dog just whines (handle animal 11). hawke sighs. ]

Kill itself?

[ There's a genuine cluelessness in the reply—she doesn't follow, which means she's giving Sebastian only cursory attention (handle animal 10). ]

[ she sighs, more to herself than anything else. just once she'd like to meet someone from a terrible place like hers--

no, wait. she wouldn't wish thedas on anyone. ]

Oh you know, arguments breaking out into murder. Demons everywhere that don't know how to play nice. Terrible choices that leave someone behind, likely dead.

[ she doesn't blame ashe for that choice, but she'd like to at least remember the person who got left behind. that'd be nice. ]

You're not the first to have a stroke of luck, coming through the Veil.

[ Alanna straightens away from the dog. ]

Takes all sorts, I guess. Have you met Sir Lannister? He'd fit right in there.

It does seem better here. [ even if she is almost constantly worrying about the state of thedas. but it's no longer her issue and hasn't been all year. it's ashe's. and... whoever else. ]

'Fit in' like he'd stand up to all the people inciting chaos or 'fit in' like he'd be one of them?

[ truthfully? probably the former while pretending that everyone with sense would do the latter. but the murkiness of ambiguity is thankfully lost in her loathing. she need not acknowledge it. ]

The second one. Definitely.

All the better that I haven't met him. I doubt he'd like me very much.

[ possibly less than meredith did and that's almost laughable. might be interesting to find out, but hawke is tired of being everyone's go-to "fix the world, it's breaking around me" person. ]

I can't decide if I want everyone to be as lucky as I am about being here or not. It seems to be something of a trial either way.

[ she nods her agreement readily enough. ] They have a saying in this realm, "The grass is always greener on the other side." I'm not sure what we're on the other side of, but I do know that it's easy to say someone's life is easy when you aren't living it.

At this point, the other side of the corpse sounds about right.

[ hawke. ]

I wish I were kidding. If it's not murder, it's random death. So far it's been delightfully corpse-free since I got here. Is that common?

Only because most of them get reanimated. [ she shuddered. it wasn't natural. the Gift wasn't meant to resurrect anyone. it was too much power, power that should have been reserved for the gods alone. ]

Does that happen here, too? I thought I'd left all that behind.

[ she sounds a bit like a whiny child at this point, like a child who doesn't want to go down for her nap, but this is how hawke copes. she's seen far too many reanimated corpses for her liking and one of them ended up pieced together from various women with her mother's head at the top. some things never stop haunting you. ]

We have an entire department for it. [ sourly, ] I'm a part of it. Dragon's Light. Nice to meet you.

[ hawke makes a face. ]

Good luck with that. I had my fill of it in Thedas, though usually taking care of it meant killing the mindless corpses. But good to know things here aren't that different from home. Although, I can't say we had people devoted to stopping it. Not like this.

Wynn's assembled quite the army. But armies are usually raised to a purpose, not put on retainer.

[ hawke hasn't had much of an opportunity to really pry into the deep dark workings of things here, so she tilts her head at this one. ]

Is that what you would call it? So... you don't think there's much purpose right now?
