[which she is going to start right now, actually, shouting across the plane.] Luthir! How long've you been a Knight?

[ rather than look startled, he merely glances over and looks reflective, before saying simply: ] 149 years.

Thanks. [Gosh, he's just so pretty. Look away, Vi.] And you, Koraith? Or is that rude? Which, in hindsight, I should have asked first probably.

[koraith]

Nonsense, my dear girl. Luthir has a few years on me! Right before 1900, that's when I arrived.

[graveflowers]

[She glances at Belle, shrewd.] If you're secretly three hundred, I'm actually going to get a complex.

[And you can be totally impressed with her straight forward mode of getting shit done. She's going to turn back to the menfolk though.] So that's a couple, er, few hundred years between you. Belle thought some of the older knights might have some awesome stories...

Ohhh I think we've both had an adventure or two. Luthir more than I have!

[graveflowers]

[This isn't helping her looking away thing, you guys. Not helping at all. Because now she's not looking away, elbow on the armrest, chin in her hand.]

Care to elaborate?

[luthir]

[ luthir stares at koraith, in what might be a disapproving manner ] I'm not much of a storyteller.

[graveflowers]

Okay.

[Well that is disappointing, but not entirely surprising actually. She looks at Belle with a shrug.] I think I should get points for effort, just for the record.

[untethered]

[ belle nudges vi affectionately ] Oh come now, he's probably just being modest. [ she leans forward ] We'd love to hear your stories, Sir Luthir. [ he hesitates a bit more, glancing at violet. rollll diplomacy checks. ]

[Diplomacy 20 total, which is amazing okay, since she's kind of sullen, but whatever she can put that on hold for the sake of story time.] Please?

[Its the magic word, after all.]

[luthir]

[ he stares past belle at violet for a long, considering moment, before finally looking away, seeming to think back. ] Very well.

I was on a mission during the Great War that ravaged Europe during the last century. British soldiers were simply giving up in the field, laying down arms and allowing themselves to be slaughtered with no rhyme or reason as to why. At first, it was believed to be a movement of mass suicide - a statement, the malaise of war.

The government suspected the enemy may be using magic to spread this effect, and turned to the Knights. I was dispatched with a team to investigate, and sent wading into the field of combat.

[graveflowers]

[The Great War, that was World War I. Violet is a soldier, that was her education. Especially because so many of the combatants were demigods.]

That doesn't sound like magic. That sounds like shell shock.

[luthir]

That was a possibility. However, what we met in the field seemed to suggest otherwise. Some of the men seemed to be going insane, clawing at the backs of their heads before finally lapsing into a state of complete apathy. It didn't take our Hoard member long to identify what was going on. A pack of thought drinkers had been drawn to the emotional frenzy of battle. They feed on intense emotion, and were latching onto soldiers, draining them slowly, and then shattering their psyches when they had finally taken all there was to take, leaving the victims as vegetables. The men were oblivious, because thought drinkers can turn invisible at will. They'd taken out nearly an entire garrison that way.

[ That is just monumentally fucked up and Violet is speechless. Literally speechless, she can't even ask what happened next because the idea of that makes her sick to her stomach. He couldn't just tell some story about the pretty half goddess who killed a monster with a train, could he? ]

[ yeah belle looks pretty aghast but manages to exclaim: ] How horrible! Did you manage to stop them all?

Luckily, thought drinkers are easily dispatched, once identified. They aren't very strong creatures, and what makes them dangerous is how easy it is for them to do their work entirely unnoticed.

[koraith]

... Luthir, perhaps your problem does not lie in your storytelling capabilities, but more in the stories you elect to tell.

I'm gonna have to agree with Koraith here. You couldn't have picked... any other story? You know what, think on it, and we'll come back to you. [That's not rude and dismissive at all, but he made her nose tickle like she was going to cry and that is equally rude.] I know I haven't been a knight for six billion years, but...

When I was sixteen I punched a dragon in the face. And possibly a shark once.

[koraith]

[ koraith looks a little appalled but he masks it well ] ... I certainly hope they deserved it.

Well he was trying eat me. He wasn't a friendly dragon like the one in the garden of the Hesperids.

How did you manage to strike it in such close quarters without succumbing to its breath weapon?

[graveflowers]

Blue cheese dressing.

[untethered]

Did you say dressing?

[graveflowers]

Uh-huh. It was either that or the fire extinguisher, but that tastes disgusting. Insert dressing, bye bye projectile vomit flames. But then, you know, he got mad at me and tried to eat me, so I punched him, got our crap and peaced out.

[Considering the girl weighs a hundred pounds soaking wet and is the size of an underfed teenager, it's kind of a big accomplishment. But it was either punching or shooting, so...]
