[ he tilts his head in the direction of the firing range, using his card to open the door. ] C'mon in, Annie Oakley.

[ well, lbr, abigail can handle a gun better than a baby so the comparison is not unwarranted. and very complimentary. she follows after him obediently. ]

[ he hits a button to set some targets at the end ] Alright, let's check your form out.

[theminotaur]

[ after deftly loading five bullets, abigail hefts it up with an ease that betrays just how long she's been able to do this. (dex 16) she's a tiny little person, but she holds the rifle like it's an extension of her arm. ] My dad taught me.

[nepotism]

Grip looks good. [ he walks beside her, ducking his head to check out every angle, and then steps aside, and nods down the range ] Let's check it out.

[ she takes a few moments to steady her breathing, counting her heartbeats as she watches the targets flutter into place. one. two. she fires once and quickly ejects the casing. (atk 20 total) one. two. she fires again and quickly ejects the casing. (atk 18) she expends the last three bullets between her second and third heartbeats, shiny metal casings pinging on the ground at her feet. (atk 10, 19, 16) another breath and she lowers the rifle marginally to peer at the targets. ] How did I do?

[ he lifts one eyebrow, impressed ] I'd have to say your dad taught you well.

[theminotaur]

[ he sure did. she lowers the gun, looping the strap over her shoulder, and stoops down, ostensibly to retrieve the spent bullets, but mostly it's that she doesn't feel like looking at him while she's talking about her dad in case he catches the crazy in her eyes. ] Yeah, he was a hunter.

[ .....and a serial killer. ]

Yeah? What did he hunt?

[theminotaur]

Deer, elk. [ teenage girls. she straightens up and puts the spent casings back in the pocket of her jeans. ]

You ever bag anything real impressive?

[theminotaur]

I caught a hundred thirty pound deer the first time he took me with him. [ there's no mistaking the pride in her eyes, even if she looks a little queasy at the same time. ]

[nepotism]

Not bad at all. You know, there might be some roaming around the back woods out here.

[theminotaur]

No. I mean, no thanks. I'd like to retire, if it's all the same. Bad memories.

[nepotism]

Fair enough. Some kind of accident?

[theminotaur]

No. [ she hedges, looking down and fidgeting uncomfortably, trying to decide which truth to tell. ] He died.

[nepotism]

Oh. [ the humor falls off his face immediately ] I'm... hey, I'm sorry.

[theminotaur]

Don't be. He was a monster.

[nepotism]

... I hear you on the daddy issues train. Why don't we, uh, go back to discussing your certification?

[theminotaur]

[ but no, no she wants solidarity on her issues! sigh, she can come back to that. ] Do I have to do anything else?

[nepotism]

Nope. We're all very official-like here. I'll add your name to the roster, so then anyone who double checks to try to get your ass in trouble can be like 'hell naw'.

Sounds very, very official. [ no, no it does not fred. ] The FBI is only slightly more official.

[nepotism]

The FBI? You look a little young to be an Agent.

[theminotaur]

[ he manages to pull a laugh out of her. ] One of my guardians was in the FBI. Well, FBI adjacent. He taught at Quantico.
